Match Thread: Cambridge United v Lincoln City

I can understand the half time criticisms. At that time, we had played three 45 minute periods against two bottom six teams - and did not look like a play-off team, never mind league leaders.

Second half today we were better, but lets not have blinkers on and think we are playing well. Cambridge hit the woodwork twice and Smith had to make one blinding save. We hardly troubled their keeper.

Anderson, Rhead and Smith were easily our best players, and their efforts got us the win. Hopefully we will get some confidence back from the three points - an early goal on Wednesday and we could be off and running again.

Actually until their goal we looked extremely good today, creating chances, worked hard off the ball and looked like we have done previously.

Their goal (which was a break out from a shockingly bad free kick from Toffolo) created some momentum from them and we looked dire for the last 15 mins of the first half.

Second half we looked better and Eards goal drove us on in a realty good 10 minute spell which resulted in the 2nd goal.

MoTM- either Anderson (who was tireless but also creative) or Akinde.

Fantastic just shows fighting for every point is crucial, suddenly with the results we are 8 points from 3rd with a game in hand. Win on NYD and we can really enjoy Everton.

How differently we see games, I thought we were poor for much of the first half, Harry and Rheady being the exceptions. That half, we defended deeper and deeper and Shackell probably played as poorly as I have seen him this season. He also had a go at Smith for the goal, when we were initially caught on the break and their number 14 got up better than any of us. I don't think we even tested their keeper first half.

Second half and there was more belief, Harry continued to be unplayable but may have been lucky with the clash of heads incident. Rheady didn't miss a header virtually all game and he and Akinde kept and shielded the ball so well. Eardley's free kick was sublime, Akinde's goal was almost sucked into the net by the travelling 2,200 Imps fans. Thereafter is was Rourkes Drift, bodies laid on the line, and Smith earning his corn.

What a game, what an atmosphere, what a battle. The day ends with City on 50 points, 6 ahead of the rest. We would all have taken that.

Performances like today win teams promotion. City showed great fight in the second half and grafted out a superb win. A bit lucky, yes, with Cambridge hitting the woodwork twice, however, 3 more points are in the bag. At the end of the season, I think we will all look back on the second half today as being the pivotal moment of the season.

It must have been a great boost to have nearly 2300 away fans, 100 miles from home. A great show all-round. UTI

Every game we play from now on will be tough there will be no easy games. We are top of the league, have the biggest fan base and the best management team. We are the envy of all our opponents and fans. To say they hate us might be going a bit far but none of them like us.
Every team that play us have nothing to lose , they will all raise there game against us. Basically we will win many games by skill but also by will , like today.
We should all be applauding the team on a fantastic result today , by winning today we have burst the bubble of hope that many opposing fans felt after about 70 mins. This could be a hugely pivotal moment.
A win is a win however way you achieve it , now more than ever we need to get behind the lads up the imps!!

Excellent away win. I also thought we started pretty well and were definitely the better team. Then we made a couple of poor decision and exposed the defence to be run at. Cambridge got a goal with their first real chance and they were suddenly a different team. Cambridge have got quite a few Ollie Palmer type players, athletic, physical and on their day some skill, but you and probably they have no idea if they will be blowing red hot or ice cold at any particular moment. We dug deep and rode our luck. These are the times when calm heads and strong characters are needed whether you are commenting on a forum or earning your living playing the game.
Its rare to win an away game at a canter and today was no different. But win it we did.
The incident where about six bodies from both sides lay prostrate on the ground following a mass scramble with our goal under seize was something I’ll remember for some time. If you must, criticise this team’s ability but be under no illusion that they are giving everything they have. You do n’t get to be six points clear at Christmas any other way.

Really i never heard it?

There is a twitter feed (The Stacey West Blog) which states racial comments were heard directed at their players- nothing I saw or heard from the terrace.

Amoo definitely got some stick first half after he taunted the Imps fans on the Habbin Terrace BUT none of the chants were racist - in fact their number 8 also got some stick ("you're just a sh*t Alan Power")- some of their players certainly weren't comfortable playing in front of 2,200 away fans with the terrace so close to the touchline

Have seen nothing to suggest our players were racially abused by their fans or our own.

We need to strengthen well in the window

A new goalkeeper - slocombe doesn’t seem to cut it
A mobile centre back - unless Wharton is kept and trusted
A young box to box midfielder
X2 forwards
Right back
Left back
A winger

Just got back to deepest Wales.
Very enjoyable journey home. Car seemed to fly along in a nice happy mood ??

Well, we started the game well. Then for last 30mins of 1st half, let Cambridge in it.

2nd half, much much better, at least after Andrade went off. He is clearly well below par at the moment.
O'Connor coming on also revitalised midfield.
Cambridge simply couldn't handle Harry Anderson, just fouling him repeatedly.
Great to see Rheady get a full 90mins. He had a really good game. Brilliant assist on the Akinde goal, and an assist on Eardley's too - completely rattled their keeper before it was taken, top stuff!
Think Rheady's presence also gave Akinde more space.
Grant Smith definitely kept us in it when needed. Top goal from Eardley.

6 pts clear.

Happy ?????????

I’ve heard similar from friends at the match. Seems a really really odd thing to suggest.

So that's a virtual full team to replace the one currently at the top of the table then.

Wow must be some top players you've got in mind

Was in the seats, but heard nothing racist.
BOOING of players, yes.
If someone actually witnessed any fan of ours direct a racist comment at any player (ours or theirs), then that needs reporting at the time.
If nothing of the sort happened, then it's mischievous to suggest it did.

Agree Andrade has not been on form for the last few games (accepting his injury at Stevenage where he didn't have the best of games). Ironically as Andrade has slipped in form, Harry has blossomed and has been exceptional the last few games (Crewe accepted as a mare for most of the team).

He was immense today

Our squad is too thin

Our midfield is lacking a woodyard type. We have no left and right back cover. We have an injured keeper. We have sold a striker already and we are short of wingers.

If we want promotion that is a sensible recruitment
