Match Thread: Aston Villa v Bournemouth, Sat 17th August, 3pm

I think it's clear Deano wants to keep Trez/Elmo together, so I doubt you'll see Guilbert starting unless Jota is also starting.

Personally, I would go for Trez on the left in front of Taylor (or Target) and Jota/Guilbert on the right as they were the standout in preseason. I feel they offered a lot on the overlap and can cause a lot of problems when we have the ball.

In terms of Conor vs Douglas, I feel we need to play Dougie as much as possible as quick as possible to get him up to speed, and this is coming from someone who owns and regularly wears a Hourihane shirt. Do I think it's fair that Conor gets the boot, nope, but life ain't fair and it's even less fair when you have the Brazil U23 captain (who is rated by Guardiola and Tite as the next Brazil #6) breathing down your neck.

Really not bothered if we win/lose/draw this match (of course I want 3 points you idiots) so long as fans stay positive and behind the team. The last thing this group needs is for the moaning and groaning to start 10 minutes into the first home match because we've not scored against Bournemouth who some deem to be worse than us.

Bad results in the first couple months of the season don't result in relegation, but fans turning on the team and creating a toxic home environment do.

Na'h we're at home, on the front foot, and will hopefully be winning our fair share of corners and free kicks.

Why would you drop Hourihane?

Bring Luiz or Nakamba in when we're away from home and in need of that extra protection

As Mrs Melon will say I like little tinker .
Even when it is a winning side I like it when a manager makes the odd change to suit the opposition. Shows me they thinking about the game.

But that's not really the point about this game really I suppose.
However, like I said Luiz looks to me like the one outfield signing that you think yeah ok I can see that this guy will be real quality judging by his background and the circumstances around his signing i.e the buy back clause. I am struggling to think of anything Connor did on Saturday he was pretty anonymous. Others were not great but I remember a few things those players did.
I don't think Connor will be drasticaly more forward thinking than Luiz or Marvelous and I'm not sure we can have the luxury in the prem of a special play player incase we get a free kick or corner.

Have we won yet?

Yes - I'm going to say this at least once ahead of every game, when we win, I'll change to have we lost yet. It's my new superstition.

Finally some good beer down the Villa I see, they’ve announced Purity as the new ale supplier. Brewed down near Studley for anyone who doesn’t know and they have a bar in town.

Pretty sure I’ve mentioned getting a local beer supplier in the consultation group thread so nice to be listened to.

There was a stat floating around social media that Douglas Luiz made as many (maybe more?) blocks, tackles, interceptions etc in his few minutes as Connor did in the whole game. Could be b/S like most stats.

Howrahan is not a proper DM, he's a set piece specialist. We need a DM to be rock solid behind the two roving AMs in Super Jack and Super John. That is not a job for Howrahan.

Luiz starts for me as plan A. If we're chasing the game then by all means put Conor on to thump a direct free kick in, but apart from that he doesn't offer or contribute enough to warrant a place. No sentiment.

I would play a FourFourTwo with both Marvelous and Louis in the middle along with the two supers With Trezeguey and Wesley upfront, or maybe a 4 2 1 1 2 Jack just behind the front two

Deano won’t ever play a 4 4 2

Wouldn’t surprise me if the midfield three is usually jack, SJM and Luiz, with Lansbury for jack, Connor for SJM and Marvelous for Luiz as the direct replacement if anyone of them missing.

There’s an interesting snippet on YouTube of a big debate after manure / Chelski where Jose, carragher and Gary Neville noticing that villa and Norwich were admirable in trying to play to our manager’s style but a bit naive to not park the bus. Not sure would necessarily agree - wouldn’t say we were at our swashbuckling best but a lot of that is down to spuds

All I hope is that we put on our boots pull up our sleeves and give it a right good go

Depends what you want in a DM and if you're stuck in the 90s or not.

Neither Bahray or Peetrove were massive tacklers or 'Rock Solid' but they were 2 of the best in that position I can remember for us.

The days of Roooy Keaane and Pawhul Ince are over. The game has changed. You can't tackle anymore for a start without the risk of being booked.

It's more about intelligence and work rate these days and Hourihane has it in spades.

But you're allowed your opinion Crimescenedinkay!

You must have missed the emergence of a small lad called Kante! Also, have you seen Fabinho and Fernandinho? Defensive midfield is an absolutely crucial spot in the modern game.

Douglas is a talented deep lying playmaker who brings the ball out from the back and can also put a shift in helping out the back four. I'm hoping with experience he can develop into a Fernandinho/Fabinho type player, but at the moment if he can run around, help the defence and pass the ball outside of dead ball situations, he deserves to start ahead of Conor dontknowhowtorun.

This continued berating of Hourihane does my head in. 21 goals and 17 assists in 2 and a bit seasons from centre mid is a great return.
He did a great job for us in the championship and he's a great man for a free kick but he's not in the team to score goals in all fairness.

I'm very excited about Douglas, I think he is a real football fan's favourite, full of energy, skill, hunger, passion, perfectionist. Theres videos on youtuvbe 10, 15 minutes long which show his every involvement in games against Barcelona and Real Madrid and he does things in those games which Conor could only do with a PlayStation controller.
