Manchester United Plc: 2014 Second Quarter Results

In case anyone is interested, the rags have published their blance sheet.

Not losing money hand over fist yet unfortunately, but gate receipts are declining, and profits haven't jumped by as much as they have in previous seasons. Their debt repayments have eased substantially, but the debt itself is not declining very rapidly as the Glazers siphon off cash to pay for their failing American businesses.

Interesting to note how dependent on sponsorship the rags are becoming, as it will be interesting to see who is wiling to keep chucking huge amounts of cash at them if they spend a season or two out of the Champions League - something that will of course, also impact on their TV income.

Just wish they'd get on with it and go bust though!

That commercial revenue is going to dry up quick if they don't make Europe this season, which is looking more and more likely. Them having to cut short their pre-season tour in order to play a Europa League third round qualifier would be great.

Bloke on Sky News saying that 80% of their profit last season came from CL money. They in deep shit if they don't qualify :157:

Top-four failure could cost United £70m

Failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League could cost Manchester United in excess of 40 million pounds and potentially as much as 70 million pounds.

The Premier League champions announced record revenues for the second quarter of the 2013-14 financial year when they delivered their financial results on Wednesday but their 0-0 draw at Arsenal, coupled with Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Fulham, left them 11 points adrift of fourth place.

And while United project their income will rise from 363.2 million pounds to somewhere between 420 and 430 million pounds in the current financial year, it could drop significantly if they do not play in Europe next season.

United banked 35.55 million euros -- around 30 million pounds -- in broadcast rights and prize money from UEFA for reaching the last 16 of the 2012-13 Champions League.

In addition, they had four home games in the competition and matchday revenue at Old Trafford averages out at over three million pounds per game, taking their total proceeds from participating in the competition above 42 million pounds.

While they may end up in the Europa League, which would offer the opportunity for more home games, it is probable ticket prices would have to be reduced and the broadcast rights are far less lucrative, resulting in lesser prize money.

Tottenham, who reached the quarterfinals of the 2012-13 Europa League, received only 5.4 million euros in prize money.

As it stands, United, who are seventh in the Premier League, are on course to miss out on European football altogether unless Manchester City win the Capital One Cup and both FA Cup finalists have already qualified for continental competition.

That means, if United were to end the season in seventh, the FA Cup final would have been contested by two of City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton.

If Sunderland were to win the Capital One Cup and someone other than those five clubs were to reach the FA Cup final, United would have to finish fifth to ensure they play in the Europa League.

Winning the Champions League, or reaching the final, as United have done in three of the last six seasons, can be worth as much as 70 million pounds.

Champions Bayern Munich received 55 million euros from UEFA in broadcast rights and prize money from UEFA last season while United banked 53 million euros in 2010-11, when they were runners-up.

In addition, they also had six home games at Old Trafford, taking their total proceeds from the competition towards the 70 million-pound mark.

Well, they are out of the FA Cup, so they won't get a straight shot to the group stage of the Europa League by winning that.

God forbid we lose the COC Final, but it would mean Sunderland go into the Europa League and the 7th place team does not.

As it stands, there are 6 teams above them in the league, as we know, and of those 6, at most three will remain in the FA Cup after this round, since Liverpool plays Arsenal and we play Chelsea. That would mean if Everton wins they will remain with two of the top 4 in the league. Knowing how the balls get pulled, if Everton loses and City/Chelsea plays Liverpool/Arsenal, it would mean the rags would have to finish 6th AND hope that Sunderland loses in the COC Final to ensure that they play at all mid week next season. A year without Europe would cripple them financially and they wouldn't be buying any big names. Those huge sponsorships they signed will dry up once they continue to be a mid-table team.

I want them to get Europa League, can't be having them having a relaxed run at the PL like Liverpool have this year.

They should be fine for money anyway, a few bucket collections targeting their 659million should see them laughing all the way to the bank.

Yeah, definitely don't want them to fall to far too quickly.

Need them to keep scraping along for a couple seasons, as if the Glazers were forced to sell, they might actually get decent owners who invest properly in the team.

Can't be having that, we need the rot to set in so that it does lasting damage. #Moyesin

PhillyBlueMoon - 13/2/2014 14:17
.............if Everton loses and City/Chelsea plays Liverpool/Arsenal, it would mean the rags would have to finish 6th AND hope that Sunderland loses in the COC Final to ensure that they play at all mid week next season.

Is it just me that finds something quite delicious in the prospect of the dark side having to cheer us on to win a trophy? :rolly:

Also, the only time the Glazers would sell is if they stop making money, and if they stop making money it means the club is mired in mid-table or worse, which means anyone who comes and buys the club without its massive commercial backing wouldn't be able to just drop millions of pounds in due to FFP.

Don't think it would ever come to that Philly, they're too big a brand, they'll always have commercial pull no matter how shit they're performing on the pitch, much like the Dallas Cowboys.

I suppose, BD, but the Cowboys will always play in the NFL due to the structure of the league. If the rags miss Europe twice in a row...

Anyone notice how Sky are drooling over Rugneys £300k wages and they are the ones with almost half a billion in debt and I don't think he is that good anymore, he would struggle to get in the City side

Sky and the BBC are claiming it's a "sign of intent" from Moyes...even though shrek was already a rags player and only Chelsea would have been willing to match his wages. Perhaps they mean it's a sign that they'll have to spend feverishly in order to regain a CL spot.

Desperate times it seems indeed....

Man Utd: Buy ticket for Olympiacos or you're missing Man City

A number of Manchester United fans have alleged the club is threatening to suspend their season ticket for March’s derby with Manchester City… unless they buy tickets for the club’s Champions League home tie with Olympiacos.

Supporters took to Twitter to post screenshots of emails they had received from the club’s Ticketing Operations Manager headlined "Olympiacos FC payment deadline".

The message reads: "The deadline to buy your ticket for Olympiacos is 8pm Wed 26 Feb. Please note that not buying this ticket will result in your Season Ticket being suspended for the Man City game."

Manchester United do this via the Automatic Cup Scheme (ACS) which has a controversial history and once again finds itself in the spotlight.

Under the T&Cs of the ACS fans purchasing a season ticket must also agree to buy tickets for any home FA Cup and Champions League games. Fans can opt out of the League Cup but this may harm applications for away tickets and cup finals.

It appears fans have missed payments or cancelled direct debits/credit cards which means funds cannot be taken. This seems to be the club's attempt to secure payment.

Isnt that Blackmail? Ok as a city fan I dont care what happens at the swamp, but, if god forbid I was a Manure fan, and I had a season ticket(,which are not the cheapest )but couldnt go to many/any European matches,
How can a football club turn round and say Tough, we are suspending YOUR season ticket which You Have paid in advance for 19 matches cos I cant go to a European match. In any other business it would go to court and theft surely......

. How to make friends and influence people the Man utd way!!!!!

So, if the fans agreed to these terms and conditions and are now reneging on them, what are the club supposed to do?
