£74m per season? How the **ck do Nike actually make anything in return?

Tell you what, if they weren't our shirt sponsors next season I'd be for a total boycott.

Manchester United closes in on record sponsor deal

Manchester United (NYSE:MANU) could be close to the most valuable sponsorship deal in sporting history, say The Times.

The paper says that the football club could clinch a deal with US sporting goods giant Nike in the coming months and the two parties are to start talks on merchandising and sponsorship "imminently".

Manchester United signed a 13-year deal with Nike in 2002 that was worth 303 million GBP plus half of profits from merchandise sold.

Analysts at Jefferies have estimated that the new arrangement could be worth 61 million GBP to United next year.

Nomura say that it could be worth 74 million GBP.

Michael Nathanson, an analyst at Nomura says:

"There are very few superstar sporting franchises like Manchester United and I would expect Nike to work hard to keep the team. For United, these long-term commercial contracts are like an annuity because the income is not dependent on results on the field, which can vary from year to year."

The new deal is forecast to be worth approximately 38 million GBP this season. Although the existing contract does not end until 2015, Nike and United have just entered a six-month exclusive renegotiating period.

Yes. All these deals with Nike and Chrysler are going to reinforce their finances and with the new Sky deal next season they won't have any excuse for a lonstanding debt and massive interest payments.

Like Fifth says though, these corporations probably have 'rags' at the flight deck. No way could Chrysler justify their deal and this one sounds the same.

Just have to drum up deals of our own to match them.
