Stat attack
This was the seventh meeting between Manchester City and Real Madrid in European competition, with each of the previous six coming in the Champions League since 2012-13. After failing to win the first four (D2 L2), City won both legs in the last 16 against them in this competition in 2019-20. head to head is now W3 D2 L2

'A joy to be here'

Both managers can be incredibly proud of their players and their efforts. Not so good defending but some of the attacking play was absolutely phenomenal.
It was a joy to be here. It was a joy to watch. It was absolutely relentless from the first minute.

This was an end to end game and for the neutral it was a brilliant match, for City fans, this was not good for the hear, City getting off to a flying start with De Bruyne and Foden, City lost John Stones, who obviously had problems from his recent lay off and the Club Captain Fernandinho came on slotting in at right back but then Real Madrid closed the gap and we went in at HT 2-1
No changes for City after the break and it was City again increased the lead only for Madrid to close in but end to end City created a 2 goal gap again but then City conceded a Penalty when Laporte who was trying to head a ball clear only headed it on to his outstretched arms and a chance for this not very good referee to hand the incentive to the opposition which was converted with style if not cheeky style but then then scoring ended. City have numerous chances to have secured this game before Real Madrid scored, but at half time City take a lead to Madrid of a slender 1 goal.

'We could have won by more'
Bernardo Silva's full-time verdict:
"I honestly think for the first 20 minutes we were so, so good. The way we pressed, the way we controlled the game and created chances.
"Over the 90 minutes it felt like we could have won by a better score."

Foden - a great game of football
Phil Foden's full time verdict:

"For the fans watching it was obviously a great game of football. We are playing a side that have won the Champions League many times and if we give the ball away they are going to punish us. It is something we need to work on in the second leg. The tie is still on."

All time classic
Along with everyone else here I suspect, I am still trying to process that.

What isn't in doubt is that it was one of the most incredible games it has been my privilege to cover here.

An absolute treat for the eyes.

'Roll on the second leg'

What a night. What a match. City got off to a roaring start with two goals in 11 minutes. They missed big chances to go 4-0 up and instead Karim Benzema made it 2-1 before half-time. City opened up a two-goal lead for a third time but the scoring was topped off by the coollest of finishes with a panenka from Karim Benzema. 4-3. A classic. Roll on the second leg at the Bernabeu next week.

'Our fans should be proud of us'
More from Bernardo Silva:
"It is the Champions League, we play one of the best teams in the world. It is still a good result. On to the next game.
"It was a good game. Our fans should be proud of us and the work we did. We could have scored more but this football. They took their chances.
"The penalty came out of nowhere. We were controlling the game. We were a bit unlucky."

This is the sixth time Real Madrid have lost the first leg of a Champions League semi-final - they've failed to reach the final on any of the previous five occasions they've lost in the first leg.

Hope that is an encouraging omen!

'They were enjoying themselves'

The players got carried away in the atmosphere and just looked as if they were enjoying themselves so much. Great character from both teams. We know what Real Madrid are made of. When they went 2-0 down and Manchester City had those chances I thought 'this might be 7-0 or 8-0!' But when the chance fell to Karim Benzema you knew they weren't going to give it up that easily.

Reinforcements?
Worth remembering that City could have Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker back in the selection mix for the trip to the Bernabeu.

Whatever the way selection pans out that second leg is already a mouthwatering prospect!
