I have to say I did not see this coming, It was one of the games that you think Newcastle will be up for this and they were but City kept them at bay and scored that first goal, City added a second and as everyone knows a 2-0 lead can change so fast if the opposition get the third goal.
City got it and then it was a matter of playing football like we know we can and the heartache that so many media outlets were quick to pounce on, mainly the BBC who were convinced that City would implode, but City answered their critics and Raheem Sterling was up for this game and we just played eye candy football and another 5 goals to the good and now we find that the goal difference is in our favour.

Shaun Goater is providing his post-match thoughts over on Matchday Live 🎤

"The confidence was always there, but this was the result and performance that we needed.

"It was a great display, a lot of goals, a lot of action.

"They’ll look around at each other and think ‘yep, we can take this over the line now’."

Steve Howey reaction 🗣
"Five might have been harsh on Newcastle, but that's why City are top of the league if you give them chances.

"Even when the game's won, they never stop going."

'Perfect response and perfect performance'

Manchester City's Jack Grealish to Sky Sports: "We knew there'd be pressure on us today after the defeat, we bounced back perfectly. We've stuck together which was needed.
"We'll try to end the season strongly and we did that today."
On whether they have talked about boosting their goal difference: "It wasn't really spoken about but it's common sense. We want to win the league so we see it ourselves.
"The main thing was to get the win. You can't speak about goal difference before you've won the game.
"Newcastle have been brilliant since January. Today was a perfect response and a perfect performance.
"We just have to go out there and win every game. We're in the driving seat. We can't look at what's going on around us. Fingers crossed. "https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/football/60987255

On City's fifth...
That is the best goal of the day, fantastic football.
Credit Grealish, he looks like he's at home in this team.
Brilliant play, the back heel from Foden is first class, three English men causing problems and Sterling who has had a fantastic game, what a finish it is from him.

'We expect nothing from Liverpool'

Manchester City's Rodri, speaking to MOTD: "The defeat to Real Madrid was so so big but football is like this. You have to switch on the focus for the Premier League because it is even more difficult.
"We did brilliant today and we have to keep going. We expect nothing from Liverpool and we have to keep going.
"We have three finals and have to finish the season like we deserve."
On the defeat to Real Madrid: "It was like a war, a big big battle in the brain. You keeping thinking about what happened. It's tough. You wait eight months for the moment to arrive and then in the last minute it is gone."https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/football/60987255

Head to head
The pre-game stats bode well for City...
🔷 We've lost just one of our last 29 league games against Newcastle, with that defeat coming at St James’ Park in January 2019.
🔷 The Magpies have never won a Premier League game at the Etihad Stadium (D2 L15), losing each of their last 13 visits to the stadium. Their last away win against Manchester City was at Maine Road in September 2000, with Alan Shearer scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory.
🔷 City have scored at least once in each of their last 27 Premier League games against Newcastle, the joint-longest run of one team scoring against another in the competition’s history

Deserved winners. It was first class, the football at times was breathtaking. A fantastic result.
Newcastle were never in the game. When Manchester City want to turn it on, they can turn it on.
It's a big three points bouncing back from the Real Madrid game.

'No better learning curve'

Newcastle United
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "The second and third goals, the two set-plays were disappointing from our perspective. Two corners, we're kicking ourselves.
"We had a good spell after the two subs. We had good chances to score.
"I'm disappointed with the last few minutes, it puts a different view on the game.
"We had some good passages of play. We tried to be positive. You can't make individual mistakes here. If you do that you'll concede - and we did.
"Those small details matter and they punished us. We could have defended both corners better.
"There's no better learning curve than playing Liverpool and Manchester City. They've taught us a lot about potential areas we need to improve.
"We can't be too negative about today. We should view it as a way to come back next season stronger.
"You could see as soon as they [returning subs] came on the impact they made. They're important players for us."
Aims for the summer: "If we can be smart with what we do in the summer and keep the spirit we have in the squad, the future is very bright for the club. The aim when we came in was to stay in the Premier League at all costs.
"I don't think we're looking at that [title contenders] at this stage. We're looking for progression. We'll have to grow into that [expectation]. Improvement is the key word."

have scored five or more goals in a Premier League game for the 30th time since Pep Guardiola took over in 2016-17, which is more than the second and third most instances by teams combined: 30 - Manchester City 14 - Liverpool 13 - Spurs Carnage.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe reaction 🗣
"City can do that to anybody, they're that good.

"The crowd were very good for them as well, it was a good atmosphere.

"Individually we didn't get the details right today, conceded from two set plays which, when you think of all the ways they can score against you, that's a no-go.

"There's a huge gap between us and City or Liverpool, but I'd say there's the same gap between most clubs in the Premier League."

'What impressed me? Everything'

Manchester City
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to MOTD: "The margin between us and Liverpool is so tight and goal difference can happen. It was important we win.
"What impressed me the most? Everything. We made it a perfect afternoon. The fans know we gave everything in both games [against Real Madrid] but unfortunately we are out.
"I have said many times, when we play away we feel so incredibly close to our fans and today we are with them and hopefully we can arrive at the Aston Villa game on the final day of the season with the destiny of the Premier League in our hands.
"But before that we have incredibly tough games. We are going to try."

Guardiola on defensive options 💬
"Ruben (Dias), Kyle (Walker) and John (Stones) are out until the end of the season. Next season they will be ready.

"In this situation it is not a problem. If Rodri has to play in that position it is not a problem, or if it’s someone from the academy.

"We have 13 players available for these players, even with the academy. When we do that everyone has to do more.

"It is not a problem. That’s what we did second half. Fernandinho played good against (Callum) Wilson. That’s what we have to do."

Man City 5-0 Newcastle
Eddie Howe has lost all 10 Premier League matches against Pep Guardiola, by an aggregate score of 30-4.
No manager has lost so many against someone else without ever picking up a point.
His 12/12 defeats against City is also a Premier League record.

Man City 5-0 Newcastle
Newcastle right-back Kieran Trippier: "We have to look back from January to now, we have taken huge steps.
"We tried fo be positive but City are top for a reason. This is the type of team we want ro be. We have to learn.
"We want to break into the top 10 [this season] and take the next step. Two huge games. We want to finish strongly."
