DREAM START FOR CITY.....
Nightmare for Luton. They decide to play a high line and Haaland escapes in behind from a De Bruyne ball. He should score - he doesn't as Kaminski saves. Doku the recycles it, takes a shot but it deflects back to Haaland who tries an acrobatic effort that hammers off the bleached blonde hair of Hashioka and flies into the top corner.
Nothing. He. Could. Do.

FROM OUR JOURNALIST JONATHAN SMITH AT CITY V LUTON 💬​

Rico Lewis is such an intelligent player and his understanding of the game belies his young age.
In one moment Jeremy Doku wants to breaks quickly but the defender is urging the side to relax, something then echoed by Pep Guardiola.
The next he is leading a lightning break from the edge of our box and alongside Erling Haaland in the front two.
Knowing the right times to go is so important in this side and Rico has a feeling for the correct moment.
 

HALF-TIME​

City go in at the break 1-0 up over Luton.
It could – and maybe should – have been more in a dominant first half for Pep Guardiola’s men.
It was a fast start for the Blues as we opened the scoring courtesy of a Daiki Hashioka own-goal after he ricocheted Erling Haaland’s volley past Thomas Kaminski.
There were other opportunities – Josko Gvardiol, Kevin De Bruyne and Matheus Nunes going closest – but we’ll take the one-goal advantage going into the final 45 minutes here at the Etihad.

That first half was the definition of one-way traffic in a football game.
City had most of the ball, all of the chances and most of the territory.
A clinical City would be 4-0 up by now. But... Luton somehow remain in this game.
Rob Edwards will be telling his players to take advantage of that fact at half-time. But they'll have to be brave.

A short corner is worked to Kovacic about 18 yards out. The ball is bouncing but he controls a half volley perfectly and the ball darts straight into the top corner.

GOAL! Man City 4-1 Luton (Doku, 87)​

Classic Doku, this.
Onyedinma has been run ragged this half, giving away a penalty a short while ago and now being turned inside out by Doku.
The City winger travels into the Luton area before bending a low shot into the far corner.
Kaminski didn't have a chance and any hopes of a Hatters comeback are over.

Outstanding from Jeremy Doku.
City sucked Luton up the pitch and for one of very few occaions they allowed Doku to get one on one with Fred Onyedinma. You feel sorry for him playing in a position he is not comfortable in.
Doku twists and turns him, inside and out, and he then slides the ball through Daiki Hashioka'slegs and into the far post. Goalkeeper no chance.

Maybe Gvardiol is right-footed...
Days after whipping in a brilliant goal on his so-called weaker foot in the Bernabeu, the defender does it again in the dying minutes for his first Etihad goal.
Doku's involved again, laying the ball to Gvardiol, who smashes into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Man City 5-1 Luton​

90+5: FULL TIME! In the end, that was emphatic from the champions.
City's finishing was erratic in the first half but, inspired by Doku, they punished Luton in the second period, rattling in four more goals to produce a statement win.
Guardiola's side are now two points clear at the top of the Premier League. Over to you, Liverpool and Arsenal...

Same position and same foot as the goal he scored at the Bernabeu in midweek, but he hits the ball brilliantly into the top left hand corner of the net this time.
Luton have been crying out for the final whistle in the last few minutes, and it could have been another two or three goals for City.

Pretty straight forward for Man City in the end.
They started very quickly and then controlled the majority of the game.
Luton thought they may have found a way back into it at at 3-1 after sloppy play from City at the back, Ross Barkley taking the opportunity to get on the scoresheet.
Pep rung in the changes, brought in some fringe players for some minutes at the end too, so pretty satisfactory day for City, and a good scoreline in terms of goal difference too.
Not a game anyone would have expected Luton to get points from and they look forward to their next game against Brentford.

Luton boss Rob Edwards, speaking to Match of the Day: “It proved to be [a difficult game].
“A long afternoon, the longest game of football I have ever had.
“We are really depleted at the moment, it was a difficult afternoon for us. The players gave everything and we didn’t get off to the best of starts.
“A great save for Thomas and then a deflected volley off Daiki Hashioka's head. They wore us down in the end but I cannot fault the players – it is done.
“We now have five huge games that we can get ourselves out of it, we almost have to write this off.
“They scored three worldies, there was lots of shots and Thomas had to make some saves.
“We kept going and they got the last couple later on when they wore us down. The players never dropped their heads and we wont accept that. What gives me belief is our fans right with us till the end and we are going to need them."
On injury concerns: “We have one fit centre-back at the moment. To go up against City it was always going to be difficult.
“One of our strongest strengths we have such a together group and the spirit is there. It is the biggest defeat we have had this season.
“It will not change how we feel we will learn from it and it can make us better at a group – it will not knock us.
“We want to come to places like this and we want to come next year. We are in with a good chance of doing that . It’s learning from it and taking some of the positives - there was a few."
