Manchester City 2 - Swansea 1 Johnny On The Spot & Stats Link

Johnny On The Spot:

#RELIEVED. Manuel Pellegrini has talked this past week of fatigue gripping a City squad engulfed by 37 different injuries thus far. Reflecting upon his team's stuttering performance in this season's 25th fixture, he may have a point. Factor in filthy weather and more overly fussy, scattergun officiating from Robert Madley and these three points resemble gold dust...That's not to take anything away from Alan Curtis and his Swansea side who came to Manchester well drilled, seemingly with a point to prove having very publicly fallen apart in recent weeks. The Swans made the task throughout all the more difficult for a City side lacking drive and an edge. Having scrapped their way to still being in with a shout until the last 15 minutes a triple attacking introduction of power and pace almost did for The Blues once the bravery and brilliance of Joe Hart had finally been bypassed. Ultimately, it was fitting that another one of the handful of City players showing determination and a will to win today, captain Yaya Touré should seal points that City have played themselves into desperately needing. Time and again in years gone by we saw the Stretfords pull something out of the fire in the last minute and look where all those scrape throughs took them...However, we travel to Arsenal next. Patently today, as a collective, regardless of the aforementioned troubles, The Blues were again nowhere near the performance level that they should be maintaining. Too many stray passes across the park, but our main problems lie at the back. In defence we remain shambolic. A case in point was our left side. Clichy and Mangala seemingly swapping roles or sharing roles, neither looking comfortable. Looking further across that back line, the lads are not making life easy for themselves with indecision on two counts. Failure to clear lines and rubbishy distribution. The high line is being played better but offsides and Hart's agility are at risk of being over relied upon, especially with the standard of liner-ing we have seen in this campaign. Anyroad, The Engineer's squad have 8 days to get themselves into the right frame of mind for that massive fixture at Arsenal. The need to get a number of key players fit and firing this week needs no introduction. Still, all those injuries, top of the league-ish, Champions League group toppers and League Cup Semi-Finalists. Not bad, not bad all told.

Manuel Pellegrini

"Without the last two minutes of the match, I think 1-0 would be the perfect game for us...It's important to keep a clean sheet but it’s also important for the team to win this kind of game. I knew this would be difficult because we played in the week and we were
not 100 per cent in terms of recovery.

“I think that we showed the spirit of this team when we were drawing 1-1. We knew we weren’t playing that well but we also knew we had to find another goal and fortunately, we did. Yaya was one of the best players in this game. He was the player who tried to create different things.

"He just came back from an injury in his calf and he played in midweek and today so I'm happy for him.

"That was our fifth game in 15 days, it was important to win this game - now we'll see what happens at the top of the table. We have the week to work before we play Arsenal like Johnny Baguette just said...."

At least we won't be able to use injuries as an excuse if it goes tits up against the gunners since they are probably more worse off than us.

They're not you know. There was an article somewhere ( can't recall where sorry ) at the start of the month that reported Arsenal had 24 separate injury issues this season whereas we had 35.

Also have to factor in the players that have missed sustained periods through injury, we have key players missing for large parts of the season so far, arguably our three most important players, same can't be said of Arsenal.

Fact is, Rags, City and Arsenal have all been badly hit by injury this season, and all 3 would more than likely be doing far better in the league than they are now without so many key players missing.

Leicester on the other hand, have got off relatively lightly on the injury front, which is why so many pundits think they will eventually fall off the league pace once their lack of strength in depth is exposed by a few key injuries.

Getting everyone back fighting fit has to be a priority for the club, and I'd be very surprised if the club wasn't looking into how our injury record can be improved. If they're not, it's a dereliction of duty

Point taken re the importance of the players although I meant in relation to our fixture with them. We might have VK4 and Aguero back for that fixture meaning we could only be without Zab and Nasri whereas the Gunners will be without Carzola, Sanchez and Wilshire - major players for them.

Fair enough, Sanchez may be fit for weekend according to reports.
