Malmö

There definitely has been some back to basics coaching on finishing. You can see it in the way that Yates, MGW, Savona & Sangare have all calmley and confidently picked their spot and almost passed the ball into the net over the past few weeks. These types of chances we've been snatching at or trying to leather and blasting over the bar in the past.

Already looking fitter & much more organised, which is evident on the pitch when players clearly know their roles and track back, with defence prioritised - despite such weak opposition.

Abbott really impressing me in his limited minutes. Looks physically bigger and very composed

Do you think he will become our CB? Should we loan him in January..?

For me Yates has just progressed as the club has progressed… in fact Yates actually helps me argument - he was written off by everyone BECAUSE he’d been with us during our poorer years, but his attitude and desire to improve means he’s still a key player and captain. I’ve no doubt if McAtee had Yates’ desire, you’d have a hell of a player on your hands.

But again, it’s coming back to ability, even with CHO. I’m making the point that mcatee has ability (although im yet to see much of it) but isn’t somebody that looks like he’s ready to really demand the ball and show what he can do the way Anderson and MGW do (our best players). The reality is that next season we’re likely to be without those players and then Mcatee becomes their replacement - as it stands he looks absolutely miles off it for me and we’d be in big trouble if that’s the solution. Of course he can change that, but I’m saying this league is too demanding to overlook the fact that he’s not put a good performance in in any of the games he’s played.

Kalimuendo, who i rate, was desperate to do well last night - you could literally how much he wanted the ball, dropped deep, took players on and his celebration when he scored. I just want to see McAtee play in a way that gives Dyche something to think about… for me he’s one of the few players that doesn’t at all.

For the record, I like Kali, Bakwa, Savona and Hutchinson (paid too much though). Whilst I’m critical of Ndoye, I commend his effort levels and his desire to improve. I do think he’s a limited player but clearly he’s out to prove he’s good enough and I like that. Zinchenko and Luiz for me are a waste of time if injured all
The time. I think they’re fair write offs
Yates was about age in terms of the point I was making. The reality is that in terms of ability Yates is probably our worst midfielder but he gets the whole team working and influences tempo. It’s for things like that he is so valuable to us and why other clubs have ignored him.

You said that CHO hit the ground running with us but I certainly remember that one differently. The first six months was glimpses as he started to learn to trust himself and his body.

For different reasons McAtee is in a similar situation. He is not MGW or Anderson so won’t be all over the pitch getting involved and making lots of tackles. Anyone thinking that will be disappointed. It may be that he ends up like Carvalho but equally we could see him take control of games through his vision and ability. We already know he can score goals.

Unless we are ridiculously fortunate we won’t get a 100% hit rate but I just don’t get why every new player is shit until proven otherwise.

I would like to see him in the Championship for the rest of the season. See what he can do. He is definitely improving but there is no substitute for experience.

Nobody has written him off on here, but they’re leveling very honest summaries of his performances. Just because he’s relatively new doesn’t mean he’s immune from analyzing his performances… it is a forum to talk about Forest. He’s not played loads of football, but he’s played in 7 matches, albeit some haven’t been for long, and I don’t think he’s been anywhere near it in any of them.

7 matches certainly isn’t enough to write anyone off or give them a really hard time (I know I was guilty in my assessment of Ndoye for that), but given the opposition he’s played against in his starts, it’s enough to start questioning his output.

Bar one game played out of position , morato has been excellent this season
He has improved how he reads the game which helps overcome his lack of pace. It means we have 3 centre backs we can trust with a couple of young up and coming backups.

We could trust Morato last season tbf. We had an incredible run of games where we didn't concede after he came off the bench, and he generally did a steady job whenever he had to stand in for Niko or Murillo.

He just had a drop in form towards the end of the season which coincided with nearly everyone else having a drop in form - but some decided they had seen enough and he wasn't up to scratch.

Our new players have been being written off since they arrived. If you think differently, you may want to read some of the posts again.

McAtee is the latest scapegoat now that Ndoye and Savona seem to have proven themselves. Would McAtee have gotten a better review last night if he had run around more like Kalimuendo? Even though that’s not his game..?

You are right, this is a forum. That means that my opinion that people are writing off players way too quickly is as valid as people slating players as ‘shit’ based on limited evidence. In my opinion my viewpoint is more valid on that basis. It’s certainly more measured. If you think differently then fair enough.

Beyond being a bit reckless at times I think he is a really decent centre back. It’s one area of the pitch I am really not worried about.

The biggest problem about last night’s match was that there was no jeopardy. We can talk about big European nights, and the expectation of a better atmosphere, but the state of modern football was laid bare - the gulf between our backups and Malmo was so great that we didn’t ever get out of 1st gear.

I thought it was incredibly sad because their support was exceptional, and two sides that have both done enough to get to this stage of the competition should never be that far apart. For us, it was a friendly almost, and I think that’s a shame because it would have been nice for a European match to feel like one.

Instead, it was the equivalent of an FA Cup tie against a League One side. If we’d had a competent manager throughout our entire Europa League campaign, we’d probably already have a top 8 spot pretty much assured.

Still no sign of Pope on here which is worrying miss ihis contributions might not always agree with them but still really missing them & I would say missing him but clearly I don’t know him so they would sound absurd but I’m sure you & he will know what I mean
I stopped worrying when I saw that he's been around, just not posting. Hopefully just busy. I hope he made it to the game last night.

I hope you’re right SG. I was delighted when we signed him because I could recall him on loan at Sheffield Utd a few seasons back and he absolutely bossed games over there. Tricky, super skilful and always moving he looked a class above. Even with limited game time at City he’d chip in with a goal and assist or two. I thought he was utterly abysmal last night against very poor opposition. Hopefully it’s a fitness and confidence issue with him but I’ve got my doubts now.
"utterly abysmal", yet pretty much had an assist for our first goal.

Wobble. A. Head. Your. Give.

Their fans looked like they were having a brilliant time and adding to the atmosphere in a way their team didn't manage.

McAtee would have gotten a better review last night if he wasn’t very poor… do you think he shouldn’t be called out for being poor if he is just because he’s new? Calling out bad performances doesn’t make somebody a scapegoat the same way that praising somebody doesn’t mean you think they’re brilliant.

I think Kalimuendo has been really poor in his first few games but I think he’s a good player and I was pleased he scored last night. If I said he was really poor against Sturm, does that make him a scapegoat?

Besides, you’ve not really told me what McAtee does well and why I’m wrong to judge him - you’ve just told me he’s not MGW or Anderson and he’s a scapegoat. What am I missing in his performances?
