Malmö

McAtee would have gotten a better review last night if he wasn’t very poor… do you think he shouldn’t be called out for being poor if he is just because he’s new? Calling out bad performances doesn’t make somebody a scapegoat the same way that praising somebody doesn’t mean you think they’re brilliant.

I think Kalimuendo has been really poor in his first few games but I think he’s a good player and I was pleased he scored last night. If I said he was really poor against Sturm, does that make him a scapegoat?

Besides, you’ve not really told me what McAtee does well and why I’m wrong to judge him - you’ve just told me he’s not MGW or Anderson and he’s a scapegoat. What am I missing in his performances?
McAtee gives the impression to me of being like a youth team player who has been thrust into the spotlight of first team men's football, but as you point out he's 23, maybe it's his demeanour but for me he just looks too lightweight. Premier league football demands athletes nowadays & at the moment it doesn't appear as if he has that athleticism

We had a similar debate last night. Tbf you are both right imo. His performance yesterday was deeply meh but bash is almost certainly right about minutes and squad integration. This was a reason why we should all be happy that kali scored (i think we are all happy). Mcatee has been playing (albeit sporadically) for a team with a very different system to us. Just think he needs a bit more time for woan and stone to do their work.

Thought abbott was decent again. Liked his bravery and was prepared to get involved. Not really much to say about the game cos they were very poor with no ambition.

I'm still very concerned about Kali tbh.
Despite his goal, I find his play extremely inefficient. For every 10 long balls towards him he wins maybe 1.
Awoniyi or Jesus will win 4-6.
It makes the whole team have to work alot harder in matches where we might be pinned back for a time.

Just think its not his game and the goal made me think that more so. He is another feet player, wants to be in the 6 yard box. I dont disagree with you in the context of forest but rather like mcatee, dont think he is shit, just suited to a different style of football. Not the worst thing to have players that can bring different skills but remains to be seen if we can use them.

Tbh you could say this about all players and i suppose it comes down to integration.

He’s looking like a real old school 4-4-2 player doesn’t he - a bit Earnshaw-esque.

I’m disappointed as from his reels, he looked quite physical and I hoped we might get a bit of a Sadio Mane type player. I still think he has something about him so fingers crossed it just clicks

Maybe we should get 50p head Blackstock back to feed him!

He finds space easily and always looks to have time and has the vision to pick a pass. He wasn’t great for us last night but he was far from awful and set up the first goal.

This is despite hardly playing and trying to adapt to a very different style.

There is a big difference between being critical of a as performance and deciding a player is shit on limited evidence similar to what happened with Ndoye. A matter of perspective.

Kalimuendo is also having to learn a different style and league. His record and highlight reel suggest he is a good player with lots of potential. He needs minutes on the pitch to show what he can do.

Ndoye is a regular starter under 3 managers now despite the insistence that he was shit. Maybe it’s worth considering that when the urge strikes to label another player as shit.

If McManCity wants to become a success at Dyches Forest he needs to:
a) be more brave with the ball (move the ball forward)
b) reduce his recycling of the ball
c) react faster in his press play
d) move with more energy in his press play

Long balls, holding play up isn’t his game. He attacks space behind. With all 11 players camped in final 40 yards of pitch he didn’t have a lot of space to run into. Not judging him on that game.

A few reflections on the Malmö game:

It was very encouraging to finally see a B team do it's job and give the A team a rest. We failed to do that pretty much every time last season and it cost us later down the line. Well done to them.

I think it was probably the most one sided game I can remember seeing. Even a League 2 side would have had a go at us and put some crosses in at least. They never laid a glove on us. At one point in the second half they actually got nearly to our box, before our defenders took the ball off them and shepherded them safely back to their own half, like care assistants in an old folks home;

"Don't be silly now Mr Christiansen, let's get you back to your own half now. I'll look after that ball for you".

But their fans were hands down the best I have ever seen at the City Ground, and that isn't even close.

We could have had 5 or 6 but went flat after the attacking subs. Not sure why- Anderson kept mis-passing it. Maybe they needed more intensity from the opposition, and they certainly weren't getting that.

I sat there in the second half as the subs were being made, and reflected- how crazy would I have thought someone if they had told me 5 years ago that in 5 years time I would be watching Forest demolish Malmö in Europe, and bringing on as subs a swiss international, a Brazillian international and England's number 8?

The right side with Dominguez and Abbot was a disaster from an attacking sense. Dominguez on the wing does not work. He has no pace, no crossing ability really. Dominguez works in just about any position other than the wing- his general work was great, but as soon as he has to work with Abbot actually on the wing, it all just stopped. Abbott had no quality in the cross either.

The problem I felt with McAtee is that his confidence got knocked early on and he hid. He hit a laughable corner, then got a back pass he didn't need to make badly wrong, and his head went. It felt to me very similar to the Adam Wharton performance for England- hiding in the middle of the pitch between players rather than making space and trying to be involved. He didn't really want the ball or trust himself with it after that.

He is young. He has barely played and knows that chances aren't coming frequently and minutes depend on performances. He started badly and his head went. I felt for him, because the psychology of pro sport is very tough in your early 20s. He needs an arm around him and a show of belief from all of us. His cross for the first goal was a peach, but he just wasn't brave enough to make himself as involved as he could be after a knock to the confidence.

If we stick by him he'll come good.

Murillo at left back? Nah.

Yates was sensational all game. He is literally our only player who can arrive at the edge of the box and blast one in on target. Why can't MGW or Anderson do that?

Really liked Kalimuendo. I think he is going to be a great player for us. The way he played made me wonder if he would actually be more effective as part of a front three though, which isn't really our way. Good instincts and always looked dangerous, even though going against a low block isn't really his thing. I'd be using him against teams like Fulham and Palace who will go for it.

And as for the manager...

Postecoglou- 8P/ 0W/ 2D/ 6L scored 7 (0.93pg), conceded 18 (2.2pg) clean sheets 0

Dyche- 7P/ 4W/ 2D/ 1L scored 15 (2.1pg), conceded 5 (0.7 Pg) clean sheets 4

What I like most though is that Dyche and all his staff are absolutely loving it here. They have big smiles on their faces as they do their jobs and it just fits- as opposed to constantly feeling like the rebound from someone's more meaningful ex

Good post apart from Murillo was good at left back and Mcatee is a highly paid footballer who should get his act together or he will be sold. If his head went, then I’d question whether the club should be looking elsewhere

Murillo was okay as a left back.
He pretty much played the same as he does at CB. He's definitely not a natural in the wider position, you can just tell.
