Coventry City can expect a significant summer windfall after Norwich have reportedly put a £25m price on wanted man James Maddison.

Tottenham and Chelsea are leading the chase for the England under-21 midfielder and the Canaries are expecting a close season auction at the end of the current campaign.

The Sky Blues sold the Coventry-born star to Norwich in the January transfer window of 2016 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be an initial £2.5 to £3m with several add-ons that then City managing director Chris Anderson claimed would provide the club with “significant” funds over the course of a number of years.

The loaded deal included first team appearances, Premier League showings, goals and England caps while Coventry have a sell-on clause which, if the standard 10 per cent, would yield the club £2.5m if he goes for the asking price.

Everton and Manchester City are two other clubs who have watched him extensively this season, while he has also been linked with Liverpool, West Ham and Wolves since making the switch to Carrow Road.

The 21-year-old Sky Blues Academy graduate has been marked down as one of the best prospects outside of the Premier League and virtually every top club has been monitoring him.

Maddison has scored 13 goals so far this season, including a hat-trick at Hull earlier this month.

Norwich are determined to get a big price for the goalscoring midfielder who has been the star of their season in the Championship.

Speaking at the time of Maddison ’s sale to Norwich, who were a top flight club but heading for relegation, Anderson claimed the deal could eventually earn upwards of £6m if the player fulfilled all of his potential and the Canaries enjoy success.

Former Coventry City MD Chris Anderson oversaw the sale of James Maddison to Norwich
Anderson, who revealed there is a sell-on clause, said: “I think it’s important people understand that it’s never just about the cash up front for a player like James who is still developing and who will hopefully follow a trajectory that will be very successful.

“A selling club like us at the moment can stand to make significant amounts of money if James becomes the footballer we think he’s going to become.

“That’s money that doesn’t just come today; it’s significant money that will keep coming and will contribute to the health of the football club over the medium term because these things are structured to run over three, four, five years, by which time I know James will be an established Premier League footballer.

“So it’s a very comprehensive deal that involves a number of elements. There are certain guaranteed payments and then there are certain contingent payments to do with achievement"
