Here are five interesting stats to set the scene for today’s encounter.
- This is the first meeting between Luton Town and City since April 1999, a third tier league meeting which was won 2-0 by City with goals by Paul Dickov and Tony Vaughan.
- City are unbeaten in our last nine league games against Luton Town (W4 D5) since losing 1-0 at Kenilworth Road in September 1986.
- City have won 13 of our last 14 Premier League games against newly promoted sides (D1) since a 1-2 home defeat to Leeds United in April 2021. Away from home, we are unbeaten in 13 league games against promoted sides (W11 D2) since defeat at Norwich in September 2019 (2-3).
- Luton have won each of their last seven home league games against reigning top-flight champions, with these coming from 1985-86 to 1991-92. In English top-flight history, only Newcastle United (9 from 1899/00 to 1910/11) have ever had a longer home winning run over defending champions. Pep Guardiola is clearly not too impressed with his side's work, remonstrating with firstly Ruben Dias and then Jack Grealish, telling and showing them what they should've been doing as he goes round to talk to each of his players individually.
 

GOAL - Luton 1-2 Manchester City​

From one down to two-one up in a space of a few minutes. The ball hits Julian Alvarez to start the move and the home fans call for a handball, but it may have hit him in the face instead.
City then spring an attack, Alvarez's cross across the face of goal misses a sliding Teden Mengi and Jack Grealish is there to slot the strike through the legs of Thomas Kaminski and into the net.

You see this is where I lose it with these guys. That is committed the other way around Foden doing his player he would have been bitching the decision not to give a red cost them the game.

I have no more patience for this rank hypocrisy.
 

100 UP FOR AKE​

Congratulations to Nathan Ake who today made his 100th appearance for Manchester City.
Ake, who signed for the Blues in August 2020, hit the century landmark this afternoon in our 2-1 victory against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.
In the process, he became the 22nd player to reach the milestone during the Pep Guardiola era and the first of them to come from the Netherlands.
Of our current crop, he joined Bernardo Silva (324), Kevin De Bruyne (317), Ederson (309), Kyle Walker (276), Phil Foden (240), John Stones (237), Rodrigo (226), Ruben Dias (153) and Jack Grealish (105) in the 100-club.
Of his 100 matches played, he’s started 75, played 6,810 minutes, won 68 games, drawn 16 and lost 16 – giving him a win percentage of 68%.
He’s had 23 clean sheets, scored nine goals, enjoyed 5,502 successful passes, won 169 of 253 aerial duels, won 105 tackles, 81 interceptions, 20 blocks and 100 headed clearances.
Among the players to have made at least 50 appearances for City since his debut, he’s top for headed clearances and aerial duels won per 90 minutes.

I also don't agree with the fact that something the referee did not see properly cannot be changed to ensure the correct decision is arrived at. I also think VAR should overrule obviously incorrect calls re throws, corners or goal kicks. When there is objective evidence that the on field decision is patiently wrong (because they don't have the best view). It is ridiculous that the wrong decision is allowed to stand even though millions of viewers can
 
I thought today performance was a shot in the arm and although 1 down at HT, it was against the run of play and if it had not been for the excellence of the Luton keeper we would have been in front.
We did lack Erling Haaland, but I for me this is an advantage where the opposition do not know who to mark and whilst Luton did defend with gusto and a bit of luck to boot, once City had equalized thanks to Bernardo, despite an offside appeal and had Bernardo not buried it, it would certainly had been a penalty on Rodri.
in the 2nd goal, an appeal by the Luton fans for handball early in the play, it was clear on the replays that it hit Julian Alvarez's face and not his hand much to the home fans disappointment who will be on their way home moaning that they should have had a free kick until they see the replay on the box.
As normal City do tend once they score the first that they score the 2nd, but City stood tall and a win was very welcome.

Manchester City's Jack Grealish to Sky Sports: "I think a lot of people like to talk about City and go on like it's a big crisis, in reality we've played very good teams.

"Spurs who've been unbelievable, Liverpool who are top, Chelsea and Villa away, who've got one of the best records in Europe.

"We knew we had to keep calm today and buzzing to get back to winning ways."

'Excellent' Luton 'need to get points'​

Luton manager Rob Edwards on Sky Sports: "Very frustrating. We've come up against two top teams this week and pushed them really close. Today we got the first goal and we get to around the hour mark with relative control.

"They're starting to push and get a little bit more territory. But top teams and players find a way and that's what they did today.

"The detail and the cleverness that they do is very good. But we matched them, we were brave and aggressive and we were on the front foot.

"The goal shows that, and at the end we were pushing. But, yeah, they found a way.

"I think we take confidence from this. We've played against two of the top three that will finish this season. With the greatest respect to all the other teams, we're not going to be coming up against Arsenal and Manchester City every week.

"We need to keep building and improving and working in the areas we know we can. We can take a lot of confidence and belief. I thought today in many aspects we were excellent.

"Maybe we're changing the narrative about Luton Town a little bit. But we do need to get points."

'It was a really good test'​

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to MOTD: "Great performance after what happened in the last results. We conceded the goal in the last minute of the first half. It was a really good test and the players reacted as they had to.

"That is the challenge. They are still there in the way that they run, they fight and here and behave how we behave i am really proud."

Second half: “We played better in the first. The first half was better much better but we need the goals and in the first half we didn't score.”

On Haaland: “We don’t know. It’s his foot, we’ll see. Day by day, week by week. Hopefully we can recover him for the [Club] World Cup."

Luton Town boss Rob Edwards speaking to MOTD: "I think we can take confidence. We are playing well performing well. There's more to our game I think we've shown that, difficult opposition as well.

"I thought we were really brave, I thought the performance was excellent, without the ball really aggressive. Tried to not let them get their rhythm, get their game going. The goal was an excellent example of that.

"Frustrating to be honest, especially when you go 1-0 up. Full credit to Manchester City, that’s what top teams do."
