Love Villa/Hate Modern Football

We get promoted, then what?
Well to be honest, relegation I'm afraid.
We have far too many players to replace if we hope to survive in the Prem, let alone flourish.

It's a shame Xia did the same as Randy, made big promises. Top of the league in how many years?

The way Keith is talking, there isn't going to be much money from Xia as he's talking about the £120m money they get and making that last plus 3 years of consolidation.

That's a tough remit for any manager.

I am enjoying this season immensely. We are competitive , we are winning , there is something riding on every game and visiting some proper old fashioned grounds.

Will that be the case when we get promoted ? I don't think it will be , yet we need to go up desperately because of the £'s.

We get promoted and we see if the owner is full of it or not. If he is then relegation would be a serious concern. Anyway promotion is a long way off at the moment. it is far too soon to be talking about it.

Agreed sirdennis... depressing thought being the wrong end of the table again and fighting to survive.

And agreed Wurzel! We would see.

And then will will have Friday night football , Saturday lunchtime football , Sunday afternoon football and Monday evening football.

Aren't they bringing in Saturday night (7:45) football too SirDen?

Getting promoted would be great, I guess we just take it from there after that. We will have momentum and the "winning mentality" back at the club at least.

Yes that would soon become a distant memory if we go up.

Having said that, a club such as ours really should be at the top table, and looking at the majority of the Premier League this season (certainly bottom half), I don't think we would have too much to fear.

That's not to say we wouldn't have a struggle on our hands, just that I'd take this current side over the relegation team from 2 years ago any day of the week. And I'd fancy us to take points off the likes of Palace, West Ham, Sandwell and one or two others.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's just guarantee top six first (preferably top two, obviously!) and see where we go from there.

Agree sirdennis, I posted the same sentiment on another thread a couple of weeks ago.
The optomist in me thinks we might do better this time around, but the realist looks at our situation and I am afraid the word struggle comes to mind.
The only good thing about it is that there is a lot of very very ordinary teams in the lower half of the prem , but if we are in a yearly relegation battle again then there is not much fun in that.

With promotion - with this current squad - absolute certain relegation, and probably with less points than last time. Look at how Newcastle tore this division to shreds and look at them now, and they have one of the worlds best managers !

To be honest , if we go up, I shudder to think , I think we would need 150m just to survive. We will need two centre halves, two central midfielders and two forwards as an absolute minimum for the first team. Them alone will set you back over 100m (lets say the likes of Benteke / Sturridge - you are talking 20m + for those alone)

I think we will be destined to be an Albuonesque yo yo club for a few years I am afraid.

If we don't go up ?

Jesus, don't bear thinking about. Financial ruin, and most the squad gone, either through loans going back or age - hardly any money in return.

The hope ?

We just gotta hope we DO get promoted and Xia IS the real deal, not another mouthpiece like the last one.

I like this winning thing.

It's the thrill of the chase (trying to get promoted) that makes it good. The chase will unfortunately be better than the end result.

I am not missing the premier league. But we simply cannot be below the likes of Bournemouth, Tesco bags, Burnley, Huddersfield, Brighton. The list goes on.

That's not being snobby either. It's just a fact that we are a huge club and always have been. 7 shit years does not change that. We must be in the top league. For status and the money.

Accept we'll likely be relegated but at least not bankrupt which further championship time seems to have in store for us.

The new manager (Dyche probably) needs to add a bit of quality so that the next promotion we smash it and are in a better state than now - seems pretty straightforward tbh

(suspect a couple of last years promoted teams will drop this year, hopefully the barcodes)

Ok, let's just assume for one moment that we do get promoted.

There will be re-inforcements I'm sure. We sign up Sam Johnstone, Robert Snodgrass for sure but the main thing is we hold our own and remain in the PL. We then grow from there. So, to re-cap;

1/ Get Promoted.
2/ Retain our place in the PL season one.
3/ Season 2 onwards, we build onwards and upwards.

Simple.

Xia has no money. Next season £120m will buy at best 2 decent but not world class players.

In comparison the Wolves owners have promised their manager limitless funds.

The best thing to happen would be Xia sells the club to a multi-billionaire when we get promoted.

I would rather stay in this league than hover around the bottom 3 in the prem.

Can't afford to stay in this league, certainly can't afford to do well in the PL ... perhaps we could afford to stay in the PL. It's where Villa have to be.

OK, we're riding the crest of a wave at the moment, but an awful lot of our time in the championship has been an unhappy experience, so although I'm enjoying it at the moment I'm not in great-to-be-here camp.

If we'd have somehow fluked our way into promotion with how the team looked a couple of months ago, then I think we'd have been looking at a miserable time in the PL, certain relegation, and starting again from scratch. Not good.

At the moment we're starting to look like one of the best, maybe the best bar Wolves, teams here, and that changes things. We can still improve, if Bruce/Agnew get it right, and if we do then promotion wouldn't be a disaster. We would have the basis of a PL team, and with the right additions we could have a decent stab at it. We might still get relegated, but ought to have the basis for another serious promotion challenge if we do. In that case, don't worry about getting promoted.

Is it worth it? Yep, 100%. The PL is highly competitive, and that's what the game is about. Any of the bottom 11-12 could still be relegated with only 13 games to go, and 2 of the bottom 3 are well capable of avoiding it; even Baggies who are a bit adrift could survive, although they need a couple of wins quick. If we were there, would be nail-biting right through the season, but it wouldn't be boring; every game would matter.

I think it would take at least 3 years surviving to start seeing top-half as achievable. Even if Xia opens the piggy-bank it would take another 3 to start seriously aiming for 7th - 8th. After that, we need to somehow find a step upwards. Remember how long it took Man C, or even Spurs, to get where they are. Maybe Spurs are the model; tight with money and developing a hell of a lot from within. Or within the right vision maybe we could do a Leicester. Who knows?
