My favourite being...

"That’s how shimmering royalty grips and warps the imagination, with Disney-dressed little princesses everywhere, Princess on Board signs in car back-windows. The magic of royal unattainability was nowhere more crushingly displayed than in that faultless image of the Duchess of Cambridge, lettuce-leaf thin, sleekly white-clad pushing her Silver Cross pram. A role model? Babies are universally lovely, but that picture must be the despair of exhausted mothers, leaking breasts, struggling sleeplessly to keep a newborn safe from a fractiously jealous toddler. That’s before thinking about comparisons with 3.5 million children living below the poverty line. Or the political cant about social mobility, or the new £1m inheritance tax threshold.

That’s majesty, making everyone else feel lesser."

Why has Osborne not come down on them hard? They constitute the biggest benefit scroungers in the country, not to mention their migrant status!

Why has Osborne not come down on them hard? They constitute the biggest benefit scroungers in the country, not to mention their migrant status!

because there are few benefit scroungers who bring is circa £4.4 billion a year to the UK economy (Brand Finance 2012 report), personally I think some of the data and metrics they used weren't as exact as they should be, a more conservative net gain of around intangibles of £2.0 billion p.a. is probably more accurate.

But most of all I like the fact that we don't have to vote for some pr*ck to be President, who's probably bent, got their hand in the till or only interested in political short-termism.

Personally, I'd hate their lives as much as I suspect they do at times, if it were abolished I'd have no big squawk about it, except for whilst it would sooth the left view of society, it would simply be chucking away another source of income and cash cow that we milk as we see fit...and the left are great at spending other peoples money...JC is a point in question, his economic plans would ensure that our international creditors would pull the plug and run faster than Blair could start a war..

Nope, review in other parts of the constitution (The Lords/HOC) are long long overdue, but I'd stay well away from screwing up the Royals unless we really had a decent alternative which helped generate just as much money - which we don't have.

Jealously will get you nowhere Galvin... :10: :17:

Jealous of what? Birth? 'Royalty' and the wealth it generates are different concepts. The wealth is inherited with the title, but the only thing that differentiates a royal from a typical rich guy giving money to his children is the title.

I have no problem with inherited wealth, by the way, but the concept of Royalty is nothing to be jealous of... it's a social construct, propped up by a continued belief in its relevance, that you either agree with, or don't.

I don't care enough to want the royals removed, but at the same time I don't have any particular respect for them, by virtue of them being born to the 'right' people.

I was pulling his chain...

and my sentiments aren't too different from yours, but I know a good thing when I see one, and chucking £2.0 billion + revenues in the bin to sooth anything isn't worth it..

OK, - A STATEMENT FROM ME that may surprise you. I have ALWAYS been a real fan of the Royal Family. Mind you, our WONDERFUL Queen who has been on the throne almost all of my life has been the view I have had of royalty and that I will admit is the only view I have had. She is amazing and has been almost always exemplary and I don't necessarily believe everything portrayed by the Helen Mirren film.

The Queen has been an amazing ambassador for our country and we are the envy of so many countries in having such a great head of state. The look on people's faces when she visits a city or town or wherever she turns up even at her current age with her so pleasant smile, says it all.

Prime ministers come and go (THANK GOD) but I dread the day the actual Head of State, the Queen, steps down or passes away. I can't think of anyone who could follow her and in fairness she is an impossible act to follow. I have utmost respect for her and despite her husbands occasional overly frank and humerous faux pas (plural) I think Philip's support for her has been brilliant. When you watch him even at his age now, he deserves great applause for his unflinching support for her.

But as to who will succeed her, I dare to think. Charles for me is a no no. I would prefer to skip a generation and go straight to William. Will that happen? I doubt it, I can't see Charles passing up the chance to get his name on the cup.

But stop the monarchy? NO, it's still the best in the world and the best country in the world for having a monarchy.

Thank you Maam. God bless you.

The next Monarch should be the best qualified to do the job and be voted for by the public.

From the family that may be Princess Anne but who if given the choice of anyone in the Country from any background would get the vote, or your vote ?

Yuck!
From old fashioned paranoia to not get rid of a tiring idea, to Philip Mountbatten's casual racism, it's a funny way to live.

There's far more to Britain than the pathetic stage play that is modern Monarchies.
Surely at this stage of the game, you should take great joy in your culture and people, not the buffoonery of bowing to a 'leader'!

You, or I ??

I deem your own views on the Royals very short sighted.
And your anti-democratic views (better the Royals than electing some failure-type comments) are a sign of intolerance.

Yep they hand the perfect opportunity to abstain citing the end of obscene privilage and social inequality. Nothing reminds me more of royalty that people are not born equal. It would take guts on their part but would have 100% respect of they understood that there is no place for royalty anymore.

What are you babbling about?! I created this thread with the slant you were well aware of.
You made it abundantly clear of your Royalist/Conservative views many years ago on here, so I am not surprised with your leaning on this.
The sad and sorry fact is that some people have become indoctrinated into the idea that 'The Royals' are something to be proud of, when in fact it bellows nothing more than overindulgence and theater. But when the realism sets in, the Royalists begin scatter gunning their defense, like the economy benefits from their banal existence.

I wouldn't worry Ex, there won't be a Government coup just yet!
