We can't let the stakes and craziness of elections settle too long can we :14: The world is certainly changing. Will it be all change in France too? The ''Western Spring Uprising'' seems to be in full swing. After Brexit and Trump it won't surprise me or the majority I dont think

Le Penn is boosted by Brexit and certainly now with Trump's election, Could Le Penn be the 3rd 1. Election not until next April/May. It will soon be upon us.

LE PEN BOMBSHELL: Shock poll shows growing number of French back anti-migration hardliner

THE French presidential race has been rocked after a opinion poll showed leader of the National Front party, Marine Le Pen, is by far the most popular political figure among right-wing supporters, and also gaining ground among left-wing circles

I don't know that much about French politics but I know that they have some different rounds in their elections. The National Front normally do well in the first round and then fall away when push comes to shove.

The French elected Sarcosy (right wing) and then Hollande (left wing) and neither of them did what they promised to do. I'm not surprised if the French are looking for other options.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if she does win.

As liberal as the French may be, they've borne the brunt of the terror attacks in the past couple of years and as a people, they are bound to be scared and defensive, and looking for their state to protect them better.

This is where Le Pen and the right come in, and we've seen how campaigns of fear, hatred, misinformation (read 'lies') and 'nativism' (or whatever they call xenophobia these days) can yield worrying and largely unexpected results.

The right of centre will take votes off the far right so it is pretty unlikely she will get enough votes (more unlikely than Trump was)

However........................!

If Le Penn does win this will ultimately result in a Frexit referendum and I'd not beat against the French saying Au Revour to the EU. Which will be the end of the whole Brussels malarkey.

If they do would anyone be surprised?

They have been through so much in the past few years, Charlie Hebdo, Paris 2015, Nice. These can't have failed to have changed attitudes.

The first round of the French presidential election is five months away, yet France is already in political turmoil. There are several reasons. First, François Hollande, the incumbent president, is so weak and discredited that some expect him to pull out of the race altogether. This would be an unprecedented move for a president in office.

Second, Marine Le Pen, leader of the Front National, is going from strength to strength. She is consistently polling at more than 20% of the share of the vote (against 17.9% in 2012) and seems guaranteed to make it to the second and decisive round of next year’s presidential elections.

When is the EU going to wake up and realise that the people of Europe are rejecting their vision of a United States of Europe?

They don't want to because they don't want to lose power. If they had dialed it back they'd not have this problem.

When is the EU going to wake up and realise that the people of Europe are rejecting their vision of a United States of Europe?

The EU and the Euro is working out great for Germany. They are getting richer off the currency being held down by the likes of Greece and Italy. They also get to set up factories in Eastern Europe and export their stuff all over Europe tariff free.

The markets in London seem to be doing pretty well out of it too.

I think most Europeans agree with the grand vision of Europe but they detest being forced to pay for the banks to be bailed out. The Euro has also been a disaster for almost everyone except Germany.

Did you know that Le Pen was arrested for anti Muslim hate speech?

What a lovely woman!!!!

Anyone who supports her is racist, and possibly fascist. There are no grey areas here.

I think that the rise of the right across Europe is a clear indication that the people of the EU are far from happy with the project. Something that will become even clearer next year. As for Germany let's see how popular the EU is when they have to pick up the contributions shortfall when the UK leaves the EU. The EU politicians and their political undemocratic experiment only have themselves to blame for the troubled waters the EU is heading into.

I wonder where all of this is going. There is no doubt that the people of Europe have had enough of the neo-liberal impositions from the EU. Historically, a big war would be the easy way to get people's minds off the issues. It would also clear a few million disaffected voters off the register.

I'm not sure that Europeans would go for that anymore but you never know. Perhaps Putin would be willing to play the 'bad guy'?

It's frightening because we know how the last major rise of the far right ended.

It's frightening because we know how the last major rise of the far right ended.

It looks like we never learn from history.

What gets me is that the vast majority are better off than any time in known human history. The people complaining seem to want some Utopia that's never existed.

It's mental.

and the far right, same as the far left, are all about total restriction of freedoms and complete control.

The very thing people (and I understand EU has gone way too far and needs cropping) people want to eliminate in splitting up of the EU

But mankind, as I've said many times, is a ridiculous species and as you say, we never learn from history.

This certainly has massive echoes of the 1930's
