Kindle versus paper debate

though I usually read on a kindle app on my ipad, I also have a kindle touch, for the summer and holidays, as I cant see the screen on an ipad and also worry far more about the loss of a tablet than a kindle which is ever dropping in price. though I love the smell of new books, I am currently reading a hard-back that I was given as a christmas gift and I find it heavy and inconvenient

I'm a huge reader. Especially at night before I go to bed. I switched to an Ipad four years ago and haven't read a physical book since. I don't need a light on (which wakes the missus up) and I have all my books on it. Also the iBooks store allows me to get my next book in 30secs rather than going to a bookstore. Not to mention that books in the iBooks store are substantially cheaper than physical books (at least in Australia). Electronic reading all the way for me :) Oh and I use an Ipod touch to read when I'm travelling as its smaller and cheaper to replace (I like the backlight, otherwise I would probably get a Kindle).

Real books or audio books. iPad tires my eyes out quickly. I have an iPod touch with all my audiobooks on it. Useful when at the gym....especially on the bike for an hour.

With the iPad - brightness down and increase text size to suit. Does the trick for me. You can also change the background colour to a more cream colour to remove the glare.
I have just got into audiobooks recently, for gym and running, like you. I have found them a bit hit and miss. Good readers give great presentation but the shit ones literally make me angry. :10:

Oh so true. Shit readers are usually the authors!!!

I can see the attraction of reading off a screen, I like a real book to read but don't like twisting it about and spoiling its shape etc, I like it to look decent after I've read it. There's also the problems of when you grip it, the pages want to turn back and you have to keep pressing them down. You don't get any of that with a tablet.

I have 3 novels that I've written and published (a while ago), I never advertised them but I've wondered how to go about publishing them electronically, I must go into it, if anyone has any experience of this, I would be glad to know. At the moment they are available on Amazon as only book form.

Imwith you Welshtel, I prefer books & dont open them fully so the spine stays in shape. Have the Discworld series all lined up on my book racks & they look brand new. I love looking at my book rack, bout 450 books all pristine & smelling lovely. Love looking round the book store for a new series of books too. God im such a geek!

Sometimes I get put off by the reader, but equally there are some readers such as Paul Thornley that are superb for the genre they do. I do like a good crime drama and writers like Simon Kernick/Stephen Leather have the perfeck reader in Thornley, whilst I often hate the americanism of some readers, even for english books
