It's a question I am often asked when discussing with others the continued attempts by thousands and thousands of mostly (but by no means exclusively) African men, women and children to reach Europe by boat.
On social media the question is posed in different ways - sometimes racist and offensive, but often genuine and concerned. I am sure there is often concern, even fear behind some of the racism.
I received a flurry of messages while reporting from Valencia last month on Spain's decision to take in several hundred migrants from the Aquarius after Italy and Malta turned them away.
