Jose Mourinho bans team doctor from matchday bench

Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro has been banned by Jose Mourinho from sitting on the bench on matchdays, according to Sky sources.

Carneiro was heavily criticised by the Blues boss on Saturday after she treated Eden Hazard on the field late in their 2-2 draw at home to Swansea in the Premier League on Saturday, leading to Hazard being forced off and putting already 10-man Chelsea down to nine for a short time.

It is understood Gibraltar-born Carneiro will continue in her role as first-team doctor, but she will only work at the club's training ground in Cobham, Surrey.

Mourinho was furious at Carneiro's decision to enter the field and treat Hazard, and vented his anger at her as she returned to his technical area

Mourinho then confirmed to Sky Sports after the game that he was "not happy" with his medical staff.

The Portuguese said: "Even if you are a kit man, doctor or secretary on the bench, you have to understand the game.

"You have to know you have one player less and when you go to the pitch to assist a player, you have to make sure your player has a serious injury.

"I was sure he hadn't a serious problem. He had a knock, he was very tired. But my medical department - on an impulse - was naive and left me with eight outfield players in a counter-attack after a set piece."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry, if players didn't go down and fake injury all the time that might help who is injured and who isn't.

Thats an appalling decision from jose. Team doctors should always be on the bench just in case.

I agree with you, he could actually be losing the plot.

Plus, the only thing I actually liked about watching them play is now gone! :21:

Doctors should be able to do their job of helping the players regardless of occasion. They are the ones qualified to know if a player is injured. Player safety should be the number one priority, not the outcome of a match. What a silly and irresponsible thing for somebody in management to come out with.

Ridiculous, isn't it?
Doctors are there to ensure the safety of the players. She clearly felt he needed assistance and that's her medical imperative. It's not her job to consider the adequate defence of set pieces.

She wasn't even the first member of the medical team to go on the pitch. This is so ridiculous. Don't scapegoat her for doing her job, bollock your player for going down despite not being injured.

lol what a bellend. maybe he should attepmt to understand modern medicine, or eden hazard should stop fannying around on the floor?

This is just wrong its as stupid as AVB and Hugo Loris whats with these small men. Pathetic.

Would it be news if was the Swansea doctor, or the Stoke doctor or even our doctor ?
Full marks and commiserations to anyone who even knows who they are without looking them up.

Jose is the manager, I doubt very much that this is the first bust up he's had with his high profile doctor, and as manager he's obviously had enough.

Short answer: Yes.

A doctor being removed from match duty for following procedure, because it cost the team a goal, is news. Male or female, doesn't matter. Chelsea or Stoke, doesn't matter.

If any doctor now decides to hesitate, or check his manager's approval, before tending to a player because of this, we'll start to understand why it's important.

If any other manager pretty much fired their medical staff for doing their job? Of course it would. Just like it made headlines when Pardew nutted a player, and Pearson had his confrontation with a player, for example.

If something else has gone on, then someone at the club should clarify the situation. As it is, he simply looks like a knob for his reaction to his medical staff doing their job.

Not surprised with Mourinho's actions here.

He is a prick of the highest order. I've been saying it for years. Get him out of football!

haha Costa had to be treated by the City doctor because Chelsea didn't have enough medical staff to treat both Cahill and Costa. couldn't make it up.

I'd laugh Spurfect but it's a very serious subject.
Mourinho is a disgusting individual, who has undermined the game of football and brought it into disrepute for years now. Meanwhile, winning a good deal of silverware, with which it seems he has been forgiven by doing so.
He is now throwing so many grenades on the path in front of himself, he cannot avoid them any more.

I will cherish his downfall, as he has attempted to destroy other individuals in the game.

she was an AVB hire was she not? Like Mata was an AVB signing?

Possibly nothing to do with it but just wondering.
