Jonathan Kodjia Thread

Closest to a 20 goal a season striker we have seen for years. Frustrating as hell when he doesn't pass but can create a chance for himself, which I haven't seen any other strikers do for ages.
Injuries haven't helped but hopefully he can get some form and fitness back.

As I said in the Wigan match thread I am getting increasingly disappointed with the current reaction and treatment of Kodjia by a few on the forum and particularly at the match today. It seems there are short memories, a lack of understanding of the game and human nature in general out there. The 'I want it here and i want it now' nature of some football fans nowadays and the lack of being able to see a bigger wider picture is so frustrating.

This is Kodjia's third season with us. The first he was superb. Scored 19 goals, apparently worth 20 points to us. A more than decent return, no ?. He then gets a serious ankle injury, suffers a breakdown upon his return and is out for the whole of his second season bar a few games at the end amongst the midst of a play off battle. Not easy to just come back into ?. Season 2 gone, with hardly any game time

So season 3 starts and two games in having hardly played in 18 months mid match posts say he should be subbed, whines, some abuse and groans from the crowd. Seriously?. Has he not earned, after a career threatening injury, a decent career with us so far, some slack before the - he is selfish, greedy, lazy, not interested tripe gets trotted out which is actually just the frustration of some that he is not hitting what we all know he can do. Didn't hear much of that when he was banging in 19 goals.

Kodjia badly needs a goal, any goal, worldy or off his backside. Nothing is coming off for him, knock downs, run of the ball, those little things that build up and only seem to happen when you are down. I disagree that he is not working hard or is shying away. Not today he didn't if anything I think he is trying too hard, trying to force things. So what to do with kodjia. Probably the most brainless comment in the the thread and why I really don't think some fans actually understand the game was to suggest subbing kodjia at half time. Yes that's an idea. Sub him when he needs a goal. He is going to get confidence and his mojo back from the bench isn't he !. He needs to keep playing and playing. That's the only way back from 18 months out. It won't just happen like that. He is a human being. It's human nature that this sort of thing could happen after so long out. People need time. If in the late autumn we are still having this conversation then yes it's time to think maybe he has succumbed to the injury but 2 games in, c'mon !?.
Hope some are as understanding at their work. Imagine if your work colleague was off with illness or injury for over a year and they came back and were not quite at the races for a few days. What would you do, bang the bosses door down and demand they were removed from the office or shop floor? .

As for some fans at the match today. If you ever want proof that the crowd getting on at a player does no good then look at the match around 15 mins in today. Kodjia cuts in from the left but in a good position doesn't pass and loses the ball. Cue moans, groans, kodjia is shit etc. 60 seconds later having sprinted back to our box (lazy isn't he ????) to make up the mistake he wins the ball back and guess what?, passes when he didn't need to and it wasn't on anyway and loses the ball. Clearly the cries of derision for what happened before were still in his ears.
Kodjia had a bad game today. But not because he wasn't trying, wasn't bothered, throwing a strop . It's purely a form thing. Form due to not playing in a long long time. He's proved he can do it for us.He deserves a chance to recapture it. He genuinely was not that bad today.
C'mon (some) villa 'supporters' show a bit of class and get behind the guy who is having an awkward time. One thing is for sure he isn't going to recapture it with boos and abuse and being booted to play in some u23 match.

He should be first on the team sheet for Yeovil.

Said the same today, just needs a goal.

I do fear if he can come back fully from two injuries that years back would have ended a career, but some of the pillocks by me today heckling and having a go at him, well, simply embarrassing really.

He looks isolated and needs support. Time and time again there's no one within twenty yards of him. He's not a big, holding centre forward. He needs someone to play off. I'd like to see Grealish playing closer to him. He's getting frustrated because he can't get a shot away when he's closed down. At the moment he isn't the Kodjia that scored 19 goals for us in one season. If he was he would be playing for someone else now. His injury has taken something from him. I remember a few years ago when Shearer had a fallow spell and couldn't buy a goal. It happens to the best.
Once he slots one he'll be on the wanted list again.
Play him against Yeovil and let him fill his boots.

The Kodjia being isolated problem is one I completely agree with, too many balls from our full backs are whipped around the corner for Jimmy to chase with Grealish or Adomah being more than 15-20 yards away from him. At the moment, he’s not fit enough or confident enough to get it past two players.

Now we’ve signed McGinn if he can keep whelan out of the side, our midfield is 5-10 yards further up field, we naturally play more attacking football and the likes of jack or Connor can play more in between the lines rather than in front of two lines.

If those two can do that, we’ll get the nice little triangles between central midfield, wide men and strikers which open up the defence. In fact, we need to do this as relying on set pieces to score will not win us automatic promotion.

Maybe the plan will be to play him on the left and let him cut in. He has done that before with good effect.

But at the moment he is up top on his own because it's the only option with the striker issues we have.

And I don't think it's an argument to start RHM up top on his own. He is too lightweight . Kodjia may not be that physical but is more of a presence than RHM. That big black centre half for Wigan was a beast .
In fact can we get him?

If he’s the only fit striker I’d play 4-6-0

Brings nothing to the game. Played two full matches and four defenders have better goal returns.

Real shame - think the serious injuries have destroyed his confidence and touch.

You're joking. He kept two defenders fully occupied if nothing else. Stick someone else not too far away from him which will cause the defence more problems and we'll start to see results.

Getting off the mark is so important , he's clearly a confidence player and right now it's shot. He doesn't seem in sync with the rest of the team.

Hope you’re right McP, would love to see him get his mojo back, as I’m sure would the others who are critical.
Has SB got the tactical nouse to help him? We’ll see. Also how long do we give him? Fine while we’re playing hull and Wigan but a lot will need to improve (not just Kodija) by the time we play Leeds, forest etc.

There has been mention of him playing against Yeovil and scoring goals to help his confidence , but will that really boost his confidence ?
He is a professional and knows the standards of skill in our leagues so will know it "SHOULD" be easy pickings for him . Will that bolster his confidence or just make training feel like a cup game ? ? ?

Going by last nights performance I'd say King Kodj is back. It just took that goal at Ipswich last week to get his mojo back. Shows how quick we can be to write players off sometimes

Looks promising, next step is the match fitness which willl come if he plays week in week out without injury

I love Jimmy Danger.

He can be frustrating at times, sometimes not passing when he should, but for I'd happily take 3 "Oh Jimmy why didn't you pass" moments for 1 "GOOOAALLL JIMMY DANGER!!!!!!!!!"

Accept he'll frustrate and believe he'll score eventually.
