Manchester City sent shockwaves around Europe last night, accounting for Barçelona with the type of stunning fightback that legends are made of. To see a talent-overloaded Catalan side (to which both Chelsea and Arsenal fans will testify frequently get away with murder) being ripped to shreds at a pace that reduced their referee to a bystander was stunning.

Make no mistake about it, Barçelona are one of the elite European club sides who benefit crystal clearly from a 'UEFA Protectorate' that paves their way to massive end of season blockbuster games both on and off the pitch to mutual financial benefit. This isn't JB going all Grassy Knollington out of Viz magazine, it's a fact with every overlooked dark arts foul and every hot balled draw that the disgraced Sepp Blatter referred to as his own gravy train crashed into the buffers.

A euro for Pep Guardiola's thoughts as he begins to experience what life is like on the other side of the Champions League wall of privilege. Outwardly, he was once again last night thoroughly dignified and pragmatic in his post-match press conference, especially with regard to controversial incidents, but inwardly surely he too must have frowned at one of the most spectacularly biased officiating performances we have ever seen at the Etihad Stadium. Hungary's Viktor Kassai was either rank incompetent or in an aforementioned pocket. His linesmen hindered City free kicks from out wide every time with their bizarre interpretation of the rules to the extent that on two occasions an exasperated, pumped up Kevin De Bruyne remonstrated with them as to why Barça defenders were allowed to stand to close to the dead ball. The reason I draw attention to these facts is because combined to Barça's first half devilment, they underline just how gargantuan an achievement City's pulsating victory is. It is difficult to find the superlatives to do it the justice it deserves, but I will give it a bloody good go!

The 12th win of Pep Guardiola's leadership of The Blues was described by the great commentator Ian Cheeseman of BBC GMR as being of a quality he had never witnessed across the 2,000 games he has steadfastly followed the cause. I can only echo how both technically and physically City simply overpowered their illustrious opponents.

Nevermind the personnel Barça could not call upon, very few hacks in The Street of Shame* gave Guardiola's teenagers any creedence one week ago when they went down 1-0 at the Theatre of Screams. I thought the most amazing aspect of last night was how so many stellar City players whom we have seen play stand out roles in previous wins came together as one at the very top of their game to such devastating effect. It really does appear to be the case having sounded out numerous veteran Blues that in De Bruyne, 38 years on we have finally found another Colin Bell and in Ilkay Gundogan, another Frank Lampard. Gundogan in particular put Barça's midfield in a stranglehold that Yaya Touré in his prime could not.

All credit to Pep Guardiola and his squad as they enter only their 5th month working together. Turning a losing position into a winning one against a Luis Enrique side in juggernaut mode is no mean feat. City didn't buy into the 'crisis' hype of recent weeks. They stuck to their guns throughout a tricky October and never let their heads drop. Their efforts were rewarded in a brilliant riposte at West Brom and have gone on to record what is potentially the defining result of our club's resurgence under His Highness Sheikh Mansour.

It is the seven goals thumped in during these two pivotal wins which emphasise why a patient City invested so much in bringing Pep to Manchester. He talks a hell of a lot of sense and right now he is adamant that we should all be mindful of the fact that we are still a long way from becoming one of Europe's great sides. Yet surely like us he must be bursting inside with excitement at what these players could achieve. We didn't just beat Barça, we smashed them.

And so back to the Premier League. One more game to go before another dreary international break and newly promoted Middlesbrough are coming to town on Saturday. This is where The Blues can right the wrongs of the baffling recent home draws with Everton and Southampton and ensure we continue to top the table into mid November.

Listen to the gaffer, Blues. Feet on the ground, but make damn sure you relish every moment of this. There will be much more to come.

Cracking top notch article there JB. Boy, what I night I had watching near perfect poetry from Pep's boys. My intended glass of single malt ended up with me drinking half a bloody bottle and I didn't even realise at the time. The wife certainly knew, especially at the end of the game when I turned emotional (lost voice and eyes welling up). I think I need to have a little chat with myself.

Outstanding stuff JB, right out of the top drawer. There will doubtless be some doubters and nay sayers who will point the absences of Pique, Iniesta etc but you can only play what is in front of you and they still had Messi, Diving Neymar and Cheating Suarez on top of the assistance from the officials. Their incompetence/bias drove me to distraction - Digne seemed to have the same immunity from being cautioned that is afforded to Wayne Rugney; their collective failure to deal with encroachment by the Barcelona players was blatant and the referee's decision to book Sterling after being fouled directly in front of him inexplicable......

A seismic performance on so many levels......City's credibility; Guardiola's reputation (he can do stuff even without Messi etc); the self belief among the players; the individual buy-in this will generate and which will strengthen the collective ability of the team....

For example......Pep has been preaching to all who would listen that he could improve Aguero. This was routinely scoffed at by much of the media BUT last night the first goal came from a situation where on so many other occasions we would have seen Aguero ignore the run of a better placed team mate in favour of a shot which had a 20% chance of going in if he hit it perfectly. His decision making was vindicated by the result AND has the added bonus he will find of making him better because where defenders would know that he will ALWAYS try and shoot in those situations now they will start to have seeds of doubt, they will not try and always block but perhaps hesitate thereby allowing Sergio more room etc. So by listening to Pep his overall play can improve, he can become more unpredictable, more difficult to deal with etc etc. Just a theory.....

Seismic.

Great read JB, Pep says we are nowhere near Barca who have been playing this way for 25 years and 5 months for us.
This was an outstanding performance and against arguable the best team in the world bar one.

I would say your best JOTS yet, Mr. B.
I was amazed how agricultural Barca were in their tackling. We played like, erm...Barcelona and they played like, er.... Stoke!

Neymar was seriously getting my goat. The one where he was clearly surrounded me unblemished to trick his way out so he just decided to drop to the ground as if he'd had his legs taken out by Otamendi when if fact he wasn't touched :019:

I hope our new Brazilian boy joining us in January isn't prone to such silly antics

After seeing Nibbles' performance last night, I'm not sure I want him at City now.
:048:

BTW, no news that I can find on Ferny's injury. Physioroom (usual caveats apply) state "knock" and "no return date".

I would go as far to say that R, but it was an amazing night for city fans and hopefully the fans throughout the country who support British teams in these competitions unlike Mr Ferdinand

I believe camelgob has been told by his BTSport paymasters to tone his bias down, Buzz. He was almost complimentary. McPointalot did his usual 'damning with faint praise' routine. Two-ton was fine as you'd expect.

It it worth re-subscribing?

It depends on if you are likely to want to watch their offerings ongoing if, for example, we get through to the knockout stage and then get... well, knocked out.
Also, of course, is financial considerations personal to you.
My own circumstances was I was under family pressure and, because I'm as soft as butter left out in the sun, I gave in.

No C I was just referring to the treatment of City, it would be the only reason for getting it and I have only ever watched it when City related stuff has been shown.

Their treatment of City has improved although there's no guarantee they won't revert to type at some point. However, they had their fingers severely burnt when they got all the complaints and lost so many City fan subscribers, so my feeling is this more positive change of attitude to us is more likely to continue.

Overall (so far) my view is that they are being much more balanced and positive.....but they were coming from a very low base level. Ferdinand especially seems to have been told to shelve his open hostility and bitterness and be more professional.

The only fly in the ointment for me from the Barcelona game was Owen Hargreaves who seemed to think the referee could do no wrong and kept saying it was "too early in the game" to book Digne after his pull and trip on Sterling and that he thought Sterling "went down too easily for me" after he had been fouled by Untiti. Apologist for the officials.

That said, I caught some of the coverage of Leicester's match last evening against Kopenhagen and the commentators were positively gushing about them. There was one tackle by Morgan near the half way line where there was no contact with the opposition players who hit the deck as if shot which drew the scorn of the commentator (McPointalot I think) but which immediately made me compare it to how nothing was said when Neymar threw himself to the floor in a similar situation on Tuesday evening. Then Hargreaves commented that "Otamendi getting in too tight there" when in fact he didn't touch the diving git and Neymar should have been called for it IMO. Interesting contrast for me.

Rio have most definitely toned down his anti-city bias crap and to be fair to him, I thought he was fairly complementary on Tuesday night. There is no doubt in my mind BT Sport have told him to sort himself out or he'd be history.

I don't want to hear any football TV pundit rabbit on and on and criticise any one team if its not justified. Rio had gone way over the top, simples.

Is it worth subscribing to BT Sport?

I have BT fibre optic and so I pay next to nothing for BT Sport (used to be free). Do I actually watch anything on their channels? Rarely.

Is it worth the extra subscription costs?

I know if I cancelled my subs I would end up annoyed if they showed a City game and I couldn't view and so for me it works.
