John Stones?

Everton aren't going to like him saying as much, and having been linked 'long-term' to Chelsea many would expect that to be his eventual move, but Trevor Sinclair feels Man City should try to sign John Stones!

Despite their best (ongoing) efforts Chelsea weren't able to tempt Everton into budging in the summer so you wouldn't think they'll change their stance mid-season but former City winger Sinclair has told TalkSport Stones is the type of defender suited to playing for the Citizens.

A player Manuel Pellegrini should definitely try to sign....

If he had his way the 21-year-old England international, who could end up being 'one of the best ever' central defenders, would be snapped up, which given the new Chinese investment does give City even more financial muscle! (It also gives the City haters more sticks to beat the club with!)

Do we need yet another young central defenseman? I know that Kompany isn't getting younger, but Mangala and Otemendi are pretty good in their own right, and there is no way he leaves Everton for anything less than £40m if we buy him

Quite a substantial amount of City fans seemingly don't rate Mangala, so I can see them being in favour of this. I honestly don't see what the fascination is with Stones, he looks decent but not worth binning Manga or blocking Denayer's path imo.

A very talented young man there is no doubt but whether City could "snap him up" is an entirely different matter.

Normally the phrases used in connection with City transfers are "paid over the odds" or "stitched up"!

They where talking on the radio Mangs played well alongside Kompany
Cahill plays well alongside Terry but they don't do as well as equal partners in a backline
What's Stones like without Jagelita

Fair point Colin.

Just to add Manga played well alongside Demi at the back end of last season too.

For me he has had one bad game this season against Liverpool and that seems to have undone the good work he had done prior to that for some.

I was listening to R5L walking back into town last night.
Pat Nevin was up at the Riverside following Everton's win there, and he was waxing lyrically about Stones and his ability.
I'm sure I heard him say something along the lines 'look, he's going to make mistakes, he's allowed to make mistakes, let him learn'

Along with Bluedub's point, a lot of City fans aren't prepared to do this with Mangala (nor are the media in general).
Trevor Sinclair on the same programme certainly made it clear he thinks the same way.
At times I think the problem is we try to play our way out, instead of playing the percentages.

Last night, towards the end of the game, a hoof down the Hull right wing (our left) sailed over Clichy, and Mangala was one on one on the touchline. He tried to play his way out of it to me, lost out, and conceded a free kick.
On another day, he could easily have picked up his second yellow and walked. It just seemed easier to hoof the ball out of play.

If They wont sell him to Chelsea why should or would they sell him to us and I agree, we don't need another CB right now. Mangala is still very young and is learning his trade with the best.

We all make mistakes and I think we should get behind him, he is premier class and definitely not a Gelson Fernandes

Mangala is still settling in and getting used to the pace of the PL - I imagine we will be saying similar things in 5 years time.

I think Stones could be awesome - but we can't keep throwing £32m+ at the centre half position, although £40m for Stones seems almost reasonable... We need to give Mandala and Otamendi (who seems ok too) a chance to fully establish themselves as VK4's partner - if Kompany is crocked then I'd seriously look at Stones as his replacement. Denayer - potential, did well at Celtic although that is not always a particularly accurate yardstick.

Mangala has played very well this season, just the one poor showing against Liverpool, he wasnt the only ine that was awful that day.

Very pertinent point CITK, its amazing how its accepted that Stones sill make mistakes because he's young but Mangala who was just two years older last season and settling in a new league/country got slaughtered for every little thing he does wrong.

I also agree with your point about playing percentages but in that particular incident you refer to Mangala was in complete control until Akpom jumped into him ( whilst the ball was on the deck ) and knocked him off balance then when both grabbed a hold of each other the ref buys Akpom's dive, ridiculous refereeing.

I think he would be a god buy for us, he has talent, is home-grown, is young. Plus Demi is off home and Our Captain has become a liability because of his calf problems. As Blue said Denayer also is talented, but Stones is a prem regular and worth a punt. He also probably does not have to change his home base to move to us.

Thanks DB...For what?
For mentioning the name of Denayer. he seems to be out of sight out of mind, but each time I've watched him he seems competent at the very least.
His spell in Scotland still has a few of my learned haggis eaters drooling over his performances.
Cool and calm under pressure.
Next season, I think.

Man City take on Stoke in the Premier League next up, so we'll be onto that soon enough but before we do we look at the thoughts on Everton's John Stones and if City should make a move for him as former winger Trevor Sinclair recently said the Citizens should.

Well, at least what it is thought City should do as far as the voters on here are concerned!

Fresh from Sinclair saying Stones is the type of defender City could build a reliable defence around with him having the potential to be one of the best, which I can see completely where he's coming from, we decided to ask you this question.

Should Man City, as Sinclair feels City should, try to sign Stones?

This answer, it would appear, is a no-brainer!

Bluedub - 4/12/2015 09:15

But then what do you do John, sell Vinnie?
I have no problem with Vinnie as a player, or as our captain. The problem is injuries. I would not sell him, unless he wanted to move on and would hope he would wish to stay on in some capacity post his career with us like Paddy did.

I don't see Manga as a long-term answer. I bet nobody will be bidding £40 million for him either.

In fact, if Pelli and others at the club really thought he was any good they wouldn't have offered him out on loan as part of the Otamendi deal surely ?

Headless chicken springs to mind. He's always going to have his 'headless chicken' moments for as long as he's at the club.

Reminds me a little of Boyata in several respects. Lescott was a better player with more positional sense and generally more between the ears.

Stones is a lot younger than Mangala which might explain people's willingness to allow him mistakes. Everton also haven't just paid £32 million for him which again might explain why he's granted some 'largesse'.

Stones any day over Mangala - all day long and anyone says different is talking that old crazy talk.

Vinnie probably wouldn't fetch much now at his age and his injury problems. We'll probably have to let him go though soon. How many years as he left on his contract ? Fantastic player on his day who has played his part in our growth but he's no use to us sat in the stands every game is he ?

Well no one is going anywhere until the summer so let's hope VK4 puts his injury woes behind him and both Chelsea and the rags decide that Blind and Cahill continue to be the real deal.
