Bolton being linked with Garner, at Ipswich. Formerly of Preston, who he was on fire for, before going to Rangers.

If Bolton can go for him, can't we? Would be a cracking signing I reckon.

Because the day before he signed for us the Peterborough chairman made a public statement that they had accepted a 7 figure offer from him. It was reported earlier today that Bolton had agreed a 200k fee with Charlton for Magennis.

Well they might have got a bargain there i think they will not be a bottom 4 side this season looking at who they have signed

Even though before today they'd only signed free transfers and loan players? When we do that you say it's s sign of a lack of ambition.

I really think this board has gone mad! Charlton fans are actually splitting their sides that someone has bought this Mon!

Bolton have been desperate to get in a target man and he is one, so he'll be useful for them in that regard but he's not the best player in the world to say the least. But considering the financial disaster they have been living through I think they've recruited incredibly well. They are clearly cutting their cloth accordingly so they aren't getting in world beaters but 11 signings including Oztumer, Yanic, Wilson, Hobbs, Lowe, Donaldson is not bad - I'd have not turned up my nose at some of them for us. How they somehow haven't got a transfer embargo or manage to keep scraping together money to add to a wage bill and fund signings is quite complexing when they miss payments and have a player strike.

Looking at their signings would we have been happy with them? Hobbs is a decent player but very injury prone and probably explains why he's there as no one else will take a risk on him. Keep him fit and he's a very good centre half. Yanic I would have had back, certainly over macca. If there was a choice we've made the wrong one imo, though I think it would have been a difficult deal to get done. As for the rest, personally I'm glad we don't have them.

Bolton have or at least had more money because they had less players under contract. That is both good and bad but they don't have any fringe players to sell like we do and potentially raise 600k or 700k

I'd have happily taken Yanic and Oztumer (maybe Robinson too). Hobbs and Wilson are decent cheap freebies who can do a job in defence, Lowe is ok and while Donaldson is on his last legs he's a good sub to have to suit their style of play. I'm not saying that they've ripped up trees and you'd pick all of those lads but it was more the point they knew they had to rebuild the side and seem to have known how much they had to work with and budgeted accordingly to bring in the numbers they need in the positions they lacked. In Boltons position at the start of the summer their fans must have feared the worst for this window but i suspect they'd be a lot happier with their business relative to what we are right now. To use an analogy they were on a budget and took it straight to Aldi managing to pick up what they needed and a couple of bargains. While we seem to have gone back and forth from Marks and Spencer to Aldi but spent most of our budget in M&S on something we didn't really need, ran out of money to get the rest of the stuff we wanted and maybe missed out on a few bargains.

Certainly agree with your shopping analogy. Lopes was a strange purchase given we can't afford anything else and the fridge is bare.

Re otzumer, I don't think he's cooks type of player. By that I mean he's too small and not robust enough to play in his system. He was certainly walsalls shining light but they did escape relegation by the skin if their teeth so I'd question how good he'd be against better defenders. Not very I don't think as would have been disappointed if we had purchased him.

My gut feeling is that Sharpe, Cook and co thought that either the takeover would be done and more money would follow after the 6 million loan. Therefore they went on a unnecessary splurge, forking out 1m on a promising 19 year old and chucking three year contracts at the likes of Kal Naismith. That money should have gone towards a specialist LB and securing our best players on long term contracts. We got lucky with the McClean sell on which I assume we’ve spent already on McManaman’s wages for the year.
