Sunderland's signing of Jermain Defoe would be the best January transfer signing ever

Toronto gain a player who had become a joke on Wearside - albeit a fondly thought of one - while Sunderland have closest thing you can to guaranteeing goals

Sunderland’s capture of Jermain Defoe could just be the best piece of transfer business done in the January transfer window, ever.

The Black Cats have somehow managed to swap Jozy Altidore, a striker who has scored one Premier League goal for them in 18 months – and two in two-and-a-half seasons in English football – for a forward who is the ninth highest goalscorer in the history of the competition.

In other words, they have swapped a player with Toronto who, with the best will in the world, had become a joke on Wearside – albeit a fondly thought of one – for the closest thing you can get to guaranteeing goals in English football.

To make that deal happen, they will pay Defoe around £20k-a-week more than they were paying Altidore.

I have seen some people describe the impending signing of Defoe as a sign of desperation. I even get the impression Sunderland are being mocked.

The critics, the snipers and the smirkers have suggested the transfer is a ridiculous gamble, by a desperate club, that will achieve little more than swell a 31-year-old’s pension pot.

Well, the latter part of that statement is true. Defoe will benefit enormously financially from the move, but while you may have been told he will earn £80,000-a-week for the next three-and-a-half years at the Stadium of Light, that is not his basic weekly wage.

For Defoe to earn that headline-grabbing figure he will have to win every single bonus available to him and as Sunderland haven’t won a trophy since 1973 and haven’t played in Europe since then either, that’s unlikely.

Then again, if he does activate those clauses, I doubt there is a Sunderland player or employee who will have time to whine about the waste of money in the middle of the delirious celebrations that would follow the club’s most successful campaign in a generation.

Every transfer is a gamble, of course, but I don’t think anyone can deny Defoe does not improve Sunderland’s squad. There were plenty of other clubs interested in signing him, including Crystal Palace and QPR, for a reason.

He is the type of player Sunderland have missed since Darren Bent ran off to join Aston Villa three years ago. He adds another dimension to the team offensively, whether he is starting games or coming off the bench – and he has scored more goals as a sub than anyone else in English football.

Defoe is a poacher; a natural born goalscorer. He is a finisher. He is the type of player who can do very little for 89 minutes, but still pop up with a vital goal in a vital game. Sunderland’s major problem under Gus Poyet has been scoring goals.

Defoe’s arrival should go some way to remedying that, just as it should make sure they do not have any major relegation fears between now and May.

He is a completely different to the other strikers at the club. Steven Fletcher is a good player, but he has been playing as a lone frontman under Poyet in front of a midfield that puts defensive solidity above creative flair.

Connor Wickham is a decent prospect, but has much still to prove. The arrival of Defoe will give him someone to learn from, as well as competition. The immediate impact may mean he is dropped. It’s up to him how he responds. It’s the sort of test he needs to overcome.

Normally, I’d worry that a young English striker is being deprived regular first team football by someone coming to the end of his career, but not in this case.

Wickham has had plenty of chances, he has started virtually every game this season, and has not convinced he is developing as he should. He does not deserve to be guaranteed a place in the side.

Defoe’s best years may well be behind him, but the fact is, in the modern era, players play longer. A striker in his 30s, is no longer automatically in decline.

Defoe will have to prove he is not just after one last, lucrative pay day. People will question his hunger and determination – as they did very loudly during his time in the MLS with Toronto – if he has a barren spell, but hopefully that experience in Canada means he returns to England with a point to prove.

There is a risk Defoe is more interested in his wage packet than performances, that a three-and-a-half year contract is a comfort blanket as he winds down his career, but that is where the manager comes in.

Poyet and Defoe share an agent – Aaron Lincoln – which is probably another reason the player has ended up at the Stadium of Light and not returned to his native London. There is less chance they will fall out as it is not in the agent’s interest to let that happen.

Finally, Defoe will not score goals on his own. He normally needs others to create chances for him, which may mean Poyet has to shelve his favoured 4-1-4-1 formation and play two up front. Systems, though, can change. Good managers adapt to the resources at their disposal.

Poyet gives the impression he is a good manager and if his side do create chances, Defoe will convert far more of them than he misses.

Sunderland have signed a player who makes them better and they have managed to do it without paying a transfer fee in the most difficult window. Defoe for Altidore looks like the deal of the decade.

Why do people think that JD will carry on where he was about 3 years ago ? He couldn't score a goal in EPL on the last 3 seasons if memory serves me correctly....

2011-12 11 PL goals in 25 appearances. 17 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions.

2102-13 11 PL goals in 34 appearances. 16 in total in 46 appearances. Most pundits blame his lower return on AVB's studio insistence on playing him as a lone striker.

2013-14 1 PL goal in 14 appearances 10 in 22 overall - a high level of sub appearances in his last season for us.

a total of 43 goals in 73 appearances that's better than 1:2 games over the last 3 years....

Yep, you're memory is clearly selective.

Why do you insist in denigrating one of the highest goalscorers in our history?

I've no doubt he'll find the back of the net again for Sunderland, I wonder if a Wickham /Defoe partnership could be a good one ?

This is a joke?

The two united signed are better, and that's without really thinking

Vidic and Evra

Spursex thanks for that .... I am not denigrating Defoe at all - I appreciated while he was here and enjoyed his goals as well as getting frustrated with the numerous offsides he got caught up in. Those figures that you mentioned came I batches and in couples and he failed to score when it mattered the most - against the big teams ... I am simply saying he is past it. I applauded his shoulder high farewell and memories are locked ... Now remind me in my faltering memories how many of goals led us to trophies ?

Scored against united, city, Chelsea, ars*nal and Liverpool in his last three years with us Highgate! His goal scoring ratio is better than most English strikers in the last 10 years.

Spurfect11 I celebrated his achievements while he was here... He's gone now - good luck to him. I am of the opinion that his best days are gone. IMO he is NOT even in the top 20 of the club stalwarts in my time as a supporter of the club. Let's leave that behind and agree to differ.

what a silly contention; that one man is responsible for or not of us winning cups.

Loyalty is a two way street, something clearly you know little of.

Whilst he was with us, he did his best and was a faithful servant, no histrionics he just did his best and became one of the clubs all time goalscorers.

Of course his best is behind him, you don't have to be a genius to work that out, but denigrating him the way you did in your original post says more about you than him.

You're getting needlessly nasty there.
"Loyalty is a two way street, something clearly you know little of."

WFT?

As you remind folk from time to time, this is a forum of opinions. Everyone is entitled.

I think Defoe is past it too. Do we have to continue to be loyal to a player who is not still employed by us?
NO.

LOL!

He gave his opinion, I gave mine. Denigrating one of the ex-legends of the club is the mark of the type of support we see from so many 'loyal' fans these days.

I too think Defoe's better year are behind him, but that wasn't and isnt the point.

I hope that clears up your WTF! moment... :14: :17:

Of course Defoe's best days are behind him. Find me striker who at 32 is in the best form of his life? But I've said it many times and I'll say it again, I'll never understand the level of negativity that was and still is aimed Defoe's way.

Sunderland have got themselves a very good striker. At 32, he'll still put in a good shift and give them a goal threat they didn't have before. Swapping Altidore for him was no brainer.

I thought defoe was ok. He did alright, nothing to write home about. He was loyal but due to the club inability to scout half decent strikers except berbs and keane was the reason he was here for so long.

As for best signing in jan. 32 and 80 a week for 3 and 1/2 years, sunderland are mugs.

Actually Toronto are the mugs. They swapped Defoe for Altidore striaght up. Sunderland clearly got the better of that deal.

I understand Sunderland got caught offside four times - the same player - obviously Canadians didn't succeed ... £80k pw a bargain ....

"I appreciated while he was here and enjoyed his goals as well as getting frustrated with the numerous offsides he got caught up"
"I am simply saying he is past it. I applauded his shoulder high farewell and memories are locked"

Where is the denigration of Defoe in the two quotes above and the negativity ?
I'm so sorry for him not to to continue with one record but very glad .... Now can we drop it ? As I make my way to put a bet on Sunderland finishing in the top four!

Highgate, don't be obtuse go back to your original posts about JD on multiple threads - you've expressed the same type of opinions in regards to Lennon.

Why even bother to make these snide digs?

Both players are or were long serving players who gave their all for the shirt - whether they were/are good enough is churlish in the extreme.

Maybe we're just different, but I see no cleverness or merit as a Spurs supporter in digging out players with a long service record; other 'fans' do that with other clubs - it's not an attribute I recognise in Spurs fans and like you are free to do so, I'm free to respond to those that do it with my own opinion of it.

Highgate, nobody is forcing to you keep commenting on Defoe. You are more than capable of "dropping it" yourself in that regard by simply not commenting.
