January Transfer Window

Vital Football Legend
Swans being linked with Sunderland’s 27 year old Irish centre back Tom Flanagan. He came in on a free transfer from Burton Albion in the summer. This season Sunderland have the second best defence in League 1 behind leaders Portsmouth.
With talk of Carter-Vickers returning to Spurs due to lack of game time, this story could have some legs.

We are being continuously linked with forward Lawrence Shankland.
The 23-year-old Glasgow born player has made a huge impact with Ayr United this season after being released by Aberdeen.
He’s scored 28 goals in 25 appearances, and 7 goals in his last 4 games.

There are reports that we are keen to sign 27 year old Middlesbrough and Denmark forward Martin Braithwaite, possibly on loan.
He made 21 appearances for Boro last season and scored 6 goals.
He then joined Bordeaux on loan for the rest of that season where he scored 5 goals in 14 games.
He has played for Denmark 28 times and scored 3 goals.

A lot of fans are holding back on renewing their season tickets ,waiting to see how ambitious the owners are in the January transfer window.
A report by one journalist says we offered 200k for Lawrence Shankland, which was promptly rejected and we’ve pulled out of the deal.
If that’s the limit of our resources then there’s going to be a lot of disappointed fans come the end of January.

Forgotten man Luciano Narsingh scored the winner today.
Yes, exactly a year today as we beat Watford away 1-2 in what was Carlos Carvalhal’s first game in charge. McBurnie heading down to Jordan Ayew to score the other goal.
I know, I was there!
A year later and the club are desperate to get rid of Narsingh after he’s been idle all season without a game, just picking up his huge salary, as to play him would trigger a further payment clause to his previous club PSV Eindhoven on top of the original transfer fee of £4million.

What is the club playing at?
Our Vice-Captain Van der Hoorn is out of contract the end of the season and there’s still no word on him signing a new contract.
He was signed from Ajax for £2 million on a three year contract in July 2016
The January Transfer Window opens tomorrow, and according to the rules he‘s free to talk to other clubs.

The Rules:
When can a player sign a pre contract?
With six months or less remaining on an existing contract for players aged 23 or older, they are free to negotiate with other clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement, indicating their ability to move to their intended club on a Bosman transfer when the next transfer window opens.

Now we hear from one source that Middlesboro want to do a swap deal with him and their forward Braithwaite.
VdH has been one of our best players this season and it would be crazy to let him go.
It is one area where we have very little cover. We do have Carter-Vickers on loan to play alongside Rodon in the centre of defence, but there is word that Spurs want to recall him due to lack of game time and send him back to Ipswich, where he was a regular for them last season.
The inexperienced Cian Harries from the Under 23’s would then be the only cover for this position.
We sold Alfie Mawson, Federico Fernandez, Jordi Amat and Kyle Bartley, leaving us with one senior centre back, Mike VdH, in the summer.
Surely we’re not going to let him go too?

Other Swans players whose contract runs out the end of this season are:
Wilfried Bony
Luciano Narsingh
Leroy Fer
Wayne Routledge
Courtney Baker-Richardson
Adam King
Martin Ollson
Including VdH, that’s eight players that can walk away for free at the end of the season

If you include the fire sale of 16 players and loanees returned:
Fernandez, Ki, Fabianski, Mawson, Mesa, Clucas, Sanches, Abraham, J.Ayew, A.Ayew, Rangel, Britton, Bartley, Amat, King, Baston.
Plus the 8 out of contract, if they don’t renew, equals a turn over of 24 players, that’s two football teams and a sub each team.
It’s unbelievable what’s happened and is still happening at our club.

Two reported Swansea targets snapped up by Rangers.
Kilmarnock’s Irish winger Jordan Jones, 24, and Dundee’s Finnish midfielder Glen Kamara, 23, have signed four-year pre-contracts to join Rangers in the summer.

According to reports we are in talks to sign Timothy Castagne.
Date of Birth: 1995, Belgium. Age: 23. Height: 6’1”.
Position: Defender - Right-Back. Current club: Serie A side Atalanta BC, Italy.
Fee £5-6 mill. I can’t see us paying anything like that, and besides we already have Naughton and Roberts in the right back position.
Our priority is a holding midfielder and a striker.

Gary Rowett sacked as Stoke manager. Guess who’s name is being mentioned as a replacement, our very own manager, and ex Stoke player, Graham Potter.
Rumour has it Potter almost walked last summer over the botched transfer of Ryan Woods to Swansea from Brentford. Stoke stepped in and paid the asking price.
Stoke are desperate to get back to the PL, have a rich owner prepared to invest, and he made sure they kept all their best players.
In contrast our rich owners have shown zero ambition to get back there, made zero investment, and sold all our best players.

Andy King is available from Leicester. Still under contract, he’s not getting game time at Leicester and they are willing to release him, although he’d have to lower his wage demands to come to us.
I wasn’t that impressed with him last season in the PL, but he could be just what we need in the Championship.
Plenty of experience and has a promotion from the Championship with Leicester under his belt, as well as winning the PL.
An attacking midfielder, he knows where the goal is, and in 2010-2011 season he scored 16 goals in the Championship for Leicester.

We’ll that’s the Stoke vacancy filled, relief all round.
Rhondda born Nathan Jones, who did wonders at Luton has just been appointed their new manager. He got Luton promotion from League 2 last season and they currently sit second in League 1 after being unbeaten since October 13.

Only two weeks left of the window and no movements so far.
Bony interest from China and Leeds interest in Dan James are the only rumours doing the rounds.
If we are prepared to let our brightest young talent go, then that would probably be the final straw for many of our fans, a lot of whom are holding back on renewing their season tickets to see what the hedge fund owners intentions are in the January sales.
Do they want promotion this season and bring in one or two players, are they content to consolidate this season, or do they intend to bleed the club dry and sell anything that moves to appease their fellow investors?

Bony to Galatasaray?
Seems Swansea are desperate to get him off the payroll. His contract is up in the summer so they will save a few million in wages, but at a price because they will get nothing for him after shelling out 10 mill to bring him in. Also, will Galatasaray be prepared to pay his wages in full, if not we may have to subsidise them just to do a deal.

Another club being linked, Swansea City close to agreeing a deal to sell Wilfried Bony to Qatari club Al Sadd.
Well it will be easy for him to commute there as Qatar Airways have daily direct flights from Cardiff. His family have been based in Swansea since he moved from Holland and his son is an Academy player there.

SCFC’s C.O.O. Chris Pearlman says the Swans are still "literally paying" for the mistakes they made while trying to stay in the Premier League and he also warns there could be a need for further savings.
But Pearlman insists the club's aim remains to return to the top flight but not in a way which would "riddle the club with debt".
In an interview with BBC Sport Wales, Pearlman also says:
Swansea will not "roll the dice" by spending beyond their means like some of their Championship rivals.
The club's owners, Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien, are considering a "cash injection in the form of equity" and the possibility of buying or diluting more shares.
Swansea are still paying off transfers from previous seasons.
Previous player sales have only made up for a fraction of the club's revenue deficit.
The Swans do not need to make panic sales and there is "unquestionable optimism about the future of the club".

Following Pearlmans speech it seems unlikely that we’ll be bolstering the squad with any new signings in the January transfer window.

The minimum average points needed to reach the play-offs over the last ten years is 73.
During that time Leicester with 68 points reached the play-offs, and Wolves with 78 points failed to reach the play-offs on goal difference
We presently have 37 points from 27 games, 10 won, 7 drawn, 10 lost.
We would need a minimum of 36 points from our remaining 19 games, roughly an average 2 points from every game to hit the 73 point target.
Unfortunately we have lost too many games this season. If only we had drawn half of those games lost, the target would have looked a lot easier to attain.

It beggars belief that Daniel James has yet to be offered a new contract,
what are the dullards playing at, and how unprofessional are they?
James “I haven’t heard anything yet, but obviously I’ve just got to see if there is an offer on the table. I haven’t had one yet, but I’m loving my football here”
With only 18 months left on his old contract the clock is ticking, and Leeds are hovering.
On top of this, Van der Hoorn’s contract is up the end of the season, He is the only senior centre-back on the books, having a great season, yet there is still no word on a contract being offered for him either.
There is something very wrong with this club and the way they conduct business.
They let Ki run down his contract and he went for nothing, throwing away millions in a transfer fee, who’s next?

I also heard this. When he didn't do the press conference, whatever excuse that was given wasn't true. Billy Reid, who stepped in, persuaded him to stay on.

Apparently as well, Potter will see honour his contract here in full, but I'd be amazed, based on what I've heard from behind the scenes, that he's another contract with us. It's a big shame as I really like the guy, but these things happen when we're a shambles behind the scenes.
