January Transfer Window Thread

Interesting piece on Hope and Glory tonight.

8mins 50min including the MS interview and 12mins 36 secs with Hortin and Makepeace discussing squad size, player development etc which I think is worth 5 or 6 minutes of your time.

Some very good points made by Hortin & Makepeace which doesn't reflect well on the recent signings or the long contract strategy.

I hope the board are asking the same questions of Jez George.

Taylor in my opinion could well be worth the risk for Huddersfield. prove last season he can score . When you look at what Birmingham paid for stansfield he's value for money ?
I'm not in anyway saying Lincoln should spend that money
But strikers are a rare commodity

I'm not sure I agreed with it. If players are out on loan then their wages, or at least a high proportion of them, are paid by the other club. Surely it's better they are out on loan playing, than hanging out with the squad not playing.
Getting players on long contracts allows us to potentially find valuable assets for future sales, with a higher ceiling -- even if they don't become high value they often retain the value of the initial outlay. Not every signing works, and after a run of bad results the transfer policy is an easy target - but over the last 12 months the same transfer policy hasn't done badly for the clubs finances.

I think it’ll be an astute signing. No way it’ll be £3m. Likely to be £1-2m with the rest achievable via goals, appearances and promotions.

If it fires them to promotion for £8m extra championship money, it is a no brainer.

Some strange analysis by Messers Makepeace and Hortin I thought. Among others...

They said 20 yr old erstwhile midfielder Gallagher might be a L1 centre half next year....? which seemed a bit optimistic to me, when you consider Paudie O'Connor didn't become a regular L1 centre half until he was 25

and they think we are trying to be like Chelsea signings all the promising players from Halifax and Eastbourne?

I agree even if it was to reach 3/4 million and they go up thens it worth it
Even better if he has a good run his value will only increase he's only young so he could become a very saleable asset on what I've seen last year
But what do I know

I also didn't realise he scored a pen in the championship play off final v Coventry . It must have been decided on pens ?
He must have been on the fringe at Luton for a couple of years

Yes I knew he took a pen in the play off final, shows he backs himself after not being there long.

He moved from Peterborough to Luton in the January before going up via the play offs in May.

His rise from King Lynn via Peterborough to Luton is staggering. A player who really cared about the imps when here. Wish him the very best in his career, apart from when he crosses paths with us!

AI logic says if there are 2 very different possible outcomes

a) Pay £3m and end up starting on 0 points in L1 next season

b) Pay £3m and end up in the Championship which may raise £8m

Then it's not a "no brainer".

If a) happens, its a lot of money for no return yet.

Yep he's still young and backs himself I never saw him in the flesh only on I follow
Vardy was 24 when Leicester paid a million so time is on Joe's side he's a player I hope does he well apart from when he's plays Lincoln. I liked watching him so good luck to him

Yet Luton don't rate him.
Luton is lumping ball forward to their big strikers. I was wondering before the season how will this style suit (not..) Taylor.

Joe doesn't play, wants out and gets a decent move.
Luton gets good money for him. Huddersfield gets good striker and boosts their promotion chances.
All happy.
( apart from us maybe as we can only watch and dream about transfer like this one 😉..)

You seem to pick apart most things I write so let’s have a wager 👀

I believe Joe Taylor will fire Huddersfield to the championship within his contract there. If he does, you send £50 to a charity of my choice.

If Joe Taylor doesn’t fire Huddersfield to the Championship then I will send £50 to a charity of your choice.

No brainer?

I think the point they were trying to make was that we paid a fee for both Street and McKiernan, handing them both 4 year contracts (unheard of for us and a huge change in club policy) - and neither player was then given an extended chance to establish themselves in the side. With the result that we now have to send them out on loan to get playing time.

Four year contracts only work if the player contributes to our club by making plenty of appearances over that period, and/or increases his transfer value and can be sold at a profit.

Street and McKiernan seems a long long way from that at the moment.

4 years deal is a risk but at the same time if you will get a diamond you want to tied him with la ong contract. You don't have to rush with selling after first season (Jensen) or losing player for free (Poole).
For example in McKiernan case I can see a point in doing this. Big potential and resale value even next year.e
Still disappointed as he meant to contribute straight away and play for US not on loan. Hopefully it will still work out...

Yeah it's interesting. I know some of the comments above are a little flippant but I do think there are a few squadbuilding/long term planning qs this season.

I know we're not going to sign a 20 goal ready-made, guaranteed forward - that's out of our range. But I wonder if (hindsight is 20/20) you think well if we don't sign Street, McKiernan (wages + transfer fee and compensation) and even maybe Cadamarteri but instead pick up a striker with solid EFL experience that the other players can learn from, we'd be in a better place.

They can play next to Makama, Draper, maybe Okoro occasionally in the trophy, and they can all learn off him, or as a lone striker with Moylan, Bayliss, Hackett, Ring etc around him.

Having this many forwards who are projects, and signing another project (who is actually older and behind your other projects!) and an attacking midfielder who can't even get on the bench doesn't seem quite right. And they're 23/22 - not 18/19.

Maybe the club would say they did this with Marquis and it didn't work either? IDK. He'd start for us at the moment though probably!

Edit - possibly a bad sign I basically forgot Ben House exists... slightly disappointing season.
