January Player Ratings

Who were our star performers in January?

Top of the pile is TAYO EDUN, completing a remarkable turnaround from December when he finished bottom of the monthly ratings. Michael Appleton challenged the three left-backs to make the position their own, and perhaps Tayo has done that. However, the arrival of Cohen Bramall suggests Tayo may be used further forward from now on.

CONOR McGRANDLES takes second place with a couple of excellent performances since his six-week absence through injury. With the signing of Max Sanders this month, competition for a midfield berth is hotting up.

In third place we have ANTHONY SCULLY, having another great month after topping the ratings in December. With his contract due to run out in the summer, it will be interesting to see what the club does to tie him to us for the long term.

The average team rating of 6.81 is the third highest of the season to date.

1. Tayo Edun 7.38
2. Conor McGrandles 7.37
3. Anthony Scully 7.13
4. Jorge Grant 7.04
5. TJ Eyoma 7.03
6. Tom Hopper 7.02
7. Joe Walsh 6.99
8. Adam Jackson 6.76

12. Alex Palmer 6.35
13. Morgan Rogers 6.20
14. James Jones 6.07

Interesting one, I possibly wouldn't have had Anderson in my top three overall but on ratings he's top?

Maybe

Grant
Montsma
Scully
McGrandles

For me?

Think you are missing the point. The markings and final results are from quantitative assessment of vitals poster marking per game and not a single point of view.

Sorry, I know that. I also used to record and analyse them. My point was that if I had to guess how people had quantitatively rated them, it wouldn't have been that. I bet there are people who have Harry as their top rated player based on player ratings, but wouldn't choose him as their player of the season (which I think is interesting and part of the reason I liked this when I started doing it).

I guess with Harry matches played is a consideration.

The most interesting aspect of the ratings exercise is that it reflects every performance of every player across a whole season. As the season progresses, it can be easy to forget which players performed well in the earlier stages; therefore, the ratings in May really indicate which players have been the most consistent, rather than the ones who may have performed brilliantly on occasion; or who may have had a great first half of the season and a mediocre second half, or vice versa.

I always find the end of season ratings to be very accurate and reflective of each player's contribution.

Yeah you're right. I think player of the season votes we have (e.g. the club overall ones) are often very skewed to the end of the year.

absolutely. matches played, and also opposition played against.
there is no weighting. a 6 against portsmouth, or a 6 against scunthorpe in the trophy. are they equal scores?

As for Harry specifically, he has scored over 8.0 on three occasions this season, and over 7.0 on nine more.

It is hard therefore to understand why he has only started three league games in the last three months, although MA sees things differently to us.

EDIT: Harry's three 8.0+ ratings came against Ipswich, Crewe and Forest Green.
