January 2020 Transfer Window

Also can anyone identify why any of these 3 is more deserving of a place in our first team match day squad than Jensen weir, Charlie Jolley or Kyle Joseph?
The Bournemouth lad has League experience and has been in and around their first team this season (they play in the Premier League BTW). Our young lads are not that far along in their football development

I would’ve been happy with Rhodes. I didn’t even think we needed to replace Robinson this window.

As with all loanees I question how much game time they will get. I suspect it will be the usual Garner, Massey, Jacobs pick & mix. Wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t see a Pilkington again and Gelhardt goes back to his customary 15 minute cameo.

Bottom line is, barring a miracle, we will go down because we weren’t brave enough to change manager.

Balogun could be an astute signing. Very experienced, could shore our defence up a bit and get us organised. The young winger could be anything. Our kids in the U23s are kids, not ready for a Championship relegation battle. We know nothing about these lads we need to trust the people at the club that they are going to help us. We will see but let’s give them a chance. Windass is no loss. Poor scoring record, headless chicken with no football brain and was not interested in us

So our U23s are kids and too young but Bournemouth and Brighton 21 year olds are somehow different?

I will be astounded if Balogun is not 4th choice centre back behind Naismith, Kipre and Chet.

I’m not Windass’ biggest fan but to loan him out with no replacement lessens our attacking options. His best position is on the wing for me and is a more dangerous option than the likes of Massey or Jacobs on balance this season.

I really hope the new kids turn out good somehow and will give them full backing as I always do starting at Leeds (if they play).

I HOPE we may have turned a corner after the second half on Tuesday. We have to go for it now. I think we will win tomorrow, football is a funny old game!

He has played a grand total of... nil games for Bournemouth. Hardly “in and around the first team”?

Experience at L1 and L2 level.

I really hope you’re right - can’t bear thinking of facing my Leeds supporting work colleague on Monday if we don’t at least put a performance in.

All I ask is we give them a chance. We all want Latics to do well. We’ll have to disagree on Windass, but we all have different opinions on players. I think Windass’s problem is that he doesn’t have a specialist position. You may say he’s a winger, I think he thinks his best position is centre forward but his scoring records indicates otherwise. I don’t think he has the subtlety to play No 10 but that’s my opinion.

He’s been in the their squad according to our website. Sorry I haven’t had a chance to check if that is correct but I will do

Windass was out of position playing up front on his own though and still managed to be second top scorer this season. He also was one of the top scorers last season. He could be called a headless chicken, but he had no service at all and was having to chase lost causes and chase down defenders and keepers to try and sniff out chances - which worked in getting him a couple of goals like Huddersfield and Birmingham.

Windass posed more threat than everyone else from our attacking mid, except Joffy maybe. But we hardly saw him there.

He certainly wasn't perfect but when you are struggling for goals it's not going to help matters to get rid of the player is is the best of a bad bunch on loan and replace him with a lad who fared even worse at QPR. I hope it doesn't turn out this way but on paper it's a definate trade down we didn't have to make.

Balogun has the experience factor to make him possibly better suited as you say. But the young lads coming in haven't done anything to suggest they are up for a Championship relegation battle like you say ours haven't. I hope these young lads do well for us, but they are undoubtedly a gamble, and if we are going to take a gamble on someone elses kids we should look at ours too. Our young lads may step up if given the chance and i think most would be more enthusiastic to see Jolley or Joseph coming on with 20 mins to go rather than give another chance to Massey or Jacobs at this point.

I think we have to gamble. You never know maybe they have the pace and the ability to get balls in to Moore to replace the ineffective Jacobs and Massey. As you said previously said with the Robinson deal falling through we didn’t have the money to play with. All I ask is that we give these guys a chance. I’m sure they won’t be Reece James-type players but if they are half as good we may have a chance. What I would say about Windass, yes he ran about and worked hard, but he didn’t have a specialist position. It always felt to me like we were trying to find where he was most effective. Good luck to him, but he’s not for me

BTW I thought Windass could be a good number 9 because of his pace but he can’t finish so I was wrong with that assessment

i have just had a look at Balogun's stats and i am going to stick my neck out and say he will be a positive signing for us. Between 2014 and 2018 he made a combined 73 appearances for Darmstadt in 2 Bundesliga and Mainz in 1 Bundesliga. He was a regular at Darmstadt in 2014/15 and helped them to promotion to the top flight as 2 Bundesliga runners up. He didnt play as regularly in 3 years for Mainz, but his absence a lot of the time there was due to injury. When fit he often played and completed 90 minute games too, not just a late sub. I would hazard a guess a mid table Bundesliga club are comfortably level of a bottom third PL side too.

Plus in 18/19 at Brighton, he was often on the bench for them and was only stopped from being in starting eleven or bench often due to injury.

Obvs Graham Potter as a new manager has brought in his own players and as a result Balogun is out of favour, but to me he strikes me as being comfortably good enough to play at the level of a mid-table Championship club. He has played in a higher level of league than Mulgrew as a reference point and Mulgrew impressed here when he played. So im backing him to start for us actually. His contract is up at Brighton this summer so motivation will be there to play for his future.

Other two signings im more sceptical about, however im prepared like every player to give them a chance before writing them off before they have even kicked a ball.

We still have Robinson too even though i can understand his frustration at the move to Milan collapsing and we have shipped out Windass who so often flattered to decieve.

Hopefully the win against Sheff Wed can spur us on , Leeds havent been too convincing of late nor Preston too. 4 oints from those two games and it puts a diffrrent perspective on our chances. I have wanted Cook gone for months now and still do but pointless sacking him now till end of season. Might as well ride it out, see where we are at seasons end and make that call then. Up The Tics!

I'm certain everyone will be behind them when they get on the pitch and hope for the best. When you say about gambling I agree but I think we're as well gambling on our own as well as other sides kids. When you looked at say James he undoubtedly had a pedigree above our youth players from being player of season and captain of Chelsea u23s - it made sense he jumped the queue. But these lads have not really got much more to their name than our own and that's where I think there is an inconsistency in our thinking - if they are worth a chance then surely some of our lads are worth the same.

Regarding Windass I think he was a no10 who needed a strike partner in the mould of Moore / Garner to do the physical stuff and he would provide the pace and they'd bring the best out of each other. Windass' best games were the ones we basically played 4-4-2 and he was able to feed off Vaughan, Powell or Garner. We didn’t do it very often but Cardiff this year was a great example of what Josh and Garner could do when playing close together. But we only really saw that in that one game.

No doubt cook will play him defensive midfield in that case.
The bloody man doesnt even play with wingers ? He only plays with one striker and Garner and Moore are capable. Then he gets shut of Windass for reasons we dont know. Please leave Cooky. Loan signings for signings sake.

Correct, joshes best game for us was v Cardiff playing behind garner with pilkington out wide...cooks never tried that winning formation again this season 🙈

Are you having a laugh? Tell me what you know about these players without checking Wikipedia and making your own assessment on stats. These players could do a job for us FFS give them a chance. Do you remember the Joyce window?
Listen the squad is lacking enormously in quality. Check the league table. A couple of Loans with no championship experience does not wash with me.

Baloguns a decent defender. I'm sorry but letting windass go without a quality replacement when we are so poor is such a poor decision. We needed a striker who can cut it at this level, qpr sent ours back for the sheer fact he couldn't! And a Bournemouth kid who scores once in league 2.......hold me Back.

Bright enobakhare has a better record and was sent packing by PC after not being given enough of a chance. Unless Moore and Lowe come good immediately this club is relegated. Comprehensively

All we can do is give these new loan signings a fair chance before judging them before we have ever seen them play. They all play in positions that needed strengthening/depth so lets get behind them and the team!

And can I also just say that if windass is supposedly such a crap player then why are Sheffield Wednesday taking him? A team outside the play offs with bigger club draw.

Fact is he isn't. He's a talented player our club has failed to find a position for in cooks. master system and was sent packing. Happened before anyone ????!!

If he was truly crap he'd be going down a league not up the league table!

I for one am glad to see the back of Windass as others have said he never wanted to come and I think he is possibly a troublemaker off the pitch and the dressing room may also be glad he has gone.

How can anyone claim he's a trouble maker we don't know him. It's just a way people who agree with the decision justify it, or likewise managing staff justify it. He could be the perfect bloke fact is his face doesnt fit and nor did many other players faces.
