Jamie's sugar rush

I am sat here with the laptop and Jamie's sugar rush on C4! I am absolutely bouncing off the wall with anger.

Jut seeing the first bit of a child of around 5 having to have teeth out under anaesthetic and how upset he was (unsurprisingly) when he came round.

The child is addicted to sugar. The fcuking parents want reporting to me. How the fuck do you get your child (who at their age) you can manage teeth into that mess.

Then they go on to say that some children are having to have dentures. WTF!

I know sugar is in more than we realise. However children's teeth in that state at those young ages is child cruelty.

My eldest 2 still don't have fillings. My 3rd and 4th have 1 each and that has only happened since they have grown up.

How the flying fcuk can parents allow their children to hae so much sugar their teeth end up in that mess. That's just about the teeth, never mind the rest of the health damage.

Some will say the parents need educating. They bloody shouldn't need educating. It is flaming common sense

Kat, this is the world we have created. Its kinda funny how everyone is knocking conspiracy theories(in another thread)- yet you should see what humans can buy from supermarket shelves which are considered food!

Who is controlling all this bullsh1t - and please don't blame the parents..... You reap what you sow and all that!

Why should I pay more because some people are thick.
I agree with Skeggy, Oliver is a fat smug twat

WTF have conspiracy theories got to do with it? These are facts, not conspiracy theories re sugar.

At that age of 4-5 and around there is only 1 person who is responsible for what they eat and that is the parents. That age it is the parents responsibility. They are not teenagers.

..................................................................

Skeggy & Trekker I am not keen of Jamie Oliver either, however where this sugar business is concerned and unhealthy food he is right. I agree re sugar tax Trekker. I was just having a rant about the parents

And I thought I was on my own regarding Jamie Oliver............

Yes, sugar can be well hidden by some food manufacturers, but honestly, the parents of these children obviously haven't got much between their ears have they?..............

No they haven't Pride which is polite for what I would call them. It's wrong and it's bloody cruelty.

No child should have this issues! Not 1 of them

Interestingly enough, during the 80's when food producers were trying to make everything fat-free, they discovered the more sugar they added to their products (to replace fat), the more people bought.

Still, I'd imagine that the number of children who have false teeth is statistically minute.

When Jamie was doing his school dinners there was a girl who was so clogged up with fast food that she couldn't shit. Shocking but in the overall scheme of things, it's not worth worrying about.

I do admire Jamie Oliver. I think he's a decent guy whose heart is in the right place.

Sugar and fat are cheap and tasty. Of course food manufacturers are going to add it to their products. It's not a conspiracy, just simple economics. They increase profits when they add them.

As has been said, it's the parents. My brother and sister have kids, and they are slim, fit and healthy. They've been fed a good, balanced diet from day 1, and love fruit and veg. It's easy to give in, and take the easy route, but maybe if that is what you want, kids aren't something you should consider?

Being a left-wing middle class foodie, my kids each a pretty health diet, as do I. I've been reading about food poverty in the UK. It's not something I've experienced but I'd imagine it's a factor for a lot of working class parents.

I am sure that food poverty has an effect for some, but in my experience, it is just parents taking the easy option that is a greater threat.

If little Johnny has a fit, because he wants chicken nuggets, then many just give in. Nobody ever said parenting was easy, but many seem to want it to be.

I find the idea that a parent should be a child's best friend horrifying. I'm not sure where it started but it's a total abdication of responsibility.

I totally agree. At some point society decided that children could not be unhappy in any way shape or form.

I was scared shitless of my Dad as a kid, but later in life he was my best friend. I had so much respect for him.

Heath that's all well and good. But if you have kids, it's a massive challenge not letting them have some of what they like. The problem is that chocolate, hot dogs, coke and crisps do taste nice!

Our boys get these foods as treats, we try and mix it up.

I think it's the balance Tarzan. That is certainly what I meant. The original topic I posted was about the child last night who was having a load of teeth out at the age of about 4-5 by anaesthetic and how regular it is becoming. Plus some have dentures before they are 10.

Like you Tarzan I have 4 youngsters, all be it grown now. It's about balance. When a child needs teeth out so young and looking to dentures before they are 10, that is the parents responsibility.

The parent has a say at their young age what they eat and don't. Nothing wrong with what you do with treats etc. What I did.

It's the fact of children needing teeth out at that young age and how much sugar the parents are letting them have to be addicted to it at that young age.

We are not talking teens here. It's little children

It's not a massive challenge, you just say no. That said, as KK says, it's about balance so sometimes it's good to say yes. And yes, I have 3 slim fit and health kids.

I, on the other hand, am overweight and unfit but I am responsible for that, no one else.

I'm the same. I just pour the chocolate, hot dogs, coke and crisps into a trough and mix it up for the kids.

Yes, if people want to blame poverty, fine. But watch Living Well For Less on BBC, it will be on catch up. Ordinary family, renting because they can't afford to buy a place, spunking money on junk food. The presenters showed them how to eat properly and it cost a stack less.

I was gobsmacked at how the lady kept saying she wsa too lazy. The shit she was feeding her kids was alarming but can't say I'm surprised.

The kids were actually saying they wanted proper food. She wouldn't even buy cheese to slice, she bought it ready sliced - unbelievable

Hope people watched the Sugar Rush programme last night.

10% of the NHS budget (£8.8billion) goes on type 2 diabetes, a hell of that caused by diet.

Even more startling, there are 130 legs amputated EVERY WEEK, 7000 a year from type 2 diabetes and again, they stressed this was largely diet related. Not to mention very young kids now getting it and also a hell of a lot of tooth decay and obesity

Jamie should be knighted for the work he's tried to do against the tide of educational ignorance and big food industry money.

Juan and myself have gone on about this for years and how people are killing themselves and now their kids with this crap. More often than not we've been called killjoys, conspiracy theorists or told to live and let live.... the final one I did find ironic, that's what we are saying, let the kids live!
