A Spanish woman has been sentenced to prison for setting her daughter's rapist on fire almost a decade ago, an appeals court has ruled.

Appeals for reprieve, requests to postpone the sentence and petitions to free her have failed to win clemency for Maria del Carmen García and she was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail.

García was jailed for setting on fire Antonio Soriano in a bar in the town of Benejúzar, 30 miles from Alicante in 2005. Soriano had been sentenced to nine years' imprisonment for the rape of García's then 13-year-old daughter in 1998. He was in the bar because he had been released from jail on a three-day pass.

Soriano passed Garcia in the street and allegedly taunted her about the attack before he walked into the bar. He is reported to have shouted at Garcia: "How is your daughter?"

She followed him, doused him in petrol and lit a match, then fled. She was arrested in Alicante on the same evening. Soriano, who sustained 60% burns, died 11 days later in a hospital in Valencia.

:21: Gutted! The **** only suffered for 11 days before escaping.

As much as I believe that I would do something similar to what this woman has done, I'd also expect to take the consequences of my actions. We can't have a society where vigilanteism is accepted, otherwise, where does it stop? If someone has stolen a car, is punnished by law and then the owner sees the theif in a pub a couple of years later, is it acceptabke fir them to best the crap out of the theif? Of course not, to maintain any semblance if a civilised society we have to accept the rule of law and when we don't we have to be prepared to take the consequences under said law.

5 years in jail for setting someone on fire and killing them? Fair deal for her, in normal circumstances it'd be 25 years

Good grief. Tough one this.

Glad the bloke is dead, raped a 13 year old, he's a waste of oxygen.

However, the law can't really 'let off' someone for that sort of action. Had to be slightly pre-meditated to have petrol etc. I bet she is still pleased she did it, she got her revenge but I can see why the law couldn't say that was ok to do.

Well put it like this J if I had done that and only got 5 1\2 years I would be over the moon.

Justice was served to the scum, but as said her sentence has to be given although in my onion this should be allowed, what goes around comes around,, i just hope there was no water near by.

I heard a story here where the babysitter's boyfriend raped a baby. The police caught the rapist and told the father he could visit the cells and they (the police) would turn a blind eye.

I'm not sure if what happened in the end.

Hey are Juan dude, i have seen stories of people with mental illness's get off lighter due to there illnes so in fairness this was a traumatic event for the woman and was obviously not in her right frame of mind and actions :1:

BB dude that is the way it used to be ay it or it should be imo, sorry justice should come from the people that suffered at the hands of the evil in-humane that do sick things to them in my onion

Diminished responsibility.

:)

To do such an awful thing she was obviously not in her right mind.

Yup. Experienced blind rage once. Scared me because I was told the day after by two mates, one with a black eye the other a bruised chest pulling me away from someone. I had no recollection.

Few moments in your life and you could totally change its path. We all have that animal in us when threatened or family threatened etc.

as you say, she was obviously not in her right mind to do something quite so horrendous.

Sadly though she did have to be punished no matter how despicable the rapist coward scum was. Hopefully she gets out early and hopefully no one pisses her off in prison!!!

He asked for that by mocking her. They should have cut his balls off in hospital and stuffed them in his mouth for the 11 days. I really want to say that she should go to prison, but after reading the 'how's your daughter' line, I think she should be let off.

And yet you condemn Jeremy Clarkson. :21:

LOL Deano dude, it is right though it is more instinct with us when we flip when threatend or family as Fear dude says, this poor woman has reacted out of the trauma caused to her, they should look at this womans life and see she wasn't a danger to the public before this vile evil in-humane event took place on her daughter so this shows she was out of herself i think they call it.

And Clarkson reacted coz he didn't get a pie.

I don't see how you can defend one and condemn the other. :-)
