Vital Football Hero
Has anyone else read many of Irvine's books?

Bit of a selfish thread and I promise I will do a political/religious one to boost my profile when I don't get a reply to this.

Try - The bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs - If that helps you? What's your address? I will post you my copy.

Read 'Trainspotting', 'Filth', 'The Acid House', 'Porno', 'Marabou Stork Nightmares' and currently reading 'Crime' - they're all brilliant. 'Marabou Stork...' is a bit heavy to get into. 'Trainspotting' and 'Filth' are my favourites.

Love you MGP You da man!

Just finished Marabou Stork and to be fair I found it the most Humane book (in the weirdest sense), it's evil, it really hit's at human emotions! But it hit's at the ZERO tolerance policy so it's intentions are far greater than his other books, like he's trying to do some good. It's so well written that you don't know whether the protagonist is telling the truth, lying, or doesn't know the truth (or for that matter his rape victim).

I'm so glad that someone else knows what I'm on about tho pope.......

That's the thing about Welsh, he absolutely captures the nature of humanity by exploring the the most base, nasty elements of all of us and the fleeting moments of redemption within those lives. He's an exceptional author.

I haven't read Marabou Stork for about 10 years - think I need to revisit it and get my head around it all over again before I could really offer a proper analysis beyond 'fucked up genius'!

Have you seen the new film 'Filth'? I've heared the tapeworm's missing (major plot device lost) amongst other changes. Plus I just can't see James McAvoy as Bruce. I'll probably end up watching it but my hopes aren't high despite the good reviews.

P.S. No, YOU da man!

Ha ha.

No you da..... Oh never mind!

Re-visit Marabou! It took me about 4 years to get round to reading, and after taking so much time, like all his novels, I regretted not getting their sooner!

Filth is amazing (Irvine Welsh is on record as loving it as much as trainspotting) it does kinda by-pass the whole worm thing but includes it also in a kind of if-you-have-read-the-book-you-will-get-it-and-the-studio-will-get-it -kind of way.

I really liked it and I'm a big fan of the book, but I do appreciate how films have to differ from books/

Anyway i'mditthering........ see! thanks for being a Welsh Fan! Thought I was alone, and was gunna cry and listen to my R.E.M. Records........

I'll take your word for it that he's a good writer! I've a few hundred other books I need to read before I'd get round to this genre.

Read them all, 'Trainspotting' is brilliant as is 'Glue' and 'Marabou Stork Nightmares', 'Porno' is ok, 'Acid House', 'Ecstasy' and 'If you liked School, you'll love Work' are all worth reading if you are a fan, I liked less 'Crime','Filth' and 'Bedroom Secrets of a Master Chef', they are still good, but i'd recommend those 3 last to a newcomer to Welsh, actually I have not read them all, I have 'Skag Boys' but not read it yet

Just to be self indulgent and revisit an old conversation - finally got around to watching 'Filth' facehead, my Rotten Tomatoes review kind of sums up my thoughts:

'As a huge Irvine Welsh fan who loves this particular book I was a bit anxious about how it would translate to film. With a few caveats, I enjoyed it. It seemed to capture the 'feel' of the book but made a few too many big changes to the plot for my liking. These changes ultimately mean the character is perceived in a drastically different manner in the film and source material - but that wouldn't be a problem if you've not read it, and as a stand alone film it is engrossing enough and wickedly full of dark humour whilst James McAcoy's outstanding performance demands viewing.

One thing that grated with me was changing the ethnicity of the murder victim from a Black African to Japanese. Now, whilst this could be seen as simply a way of sidestepping a plot point from the book that is not explored in the film it felt to me that, despite all the other vile things the characters do in the film, the makers bottled it here as they felt to be true to the text would be too controversial. This in turn confused me - is being racist and using racial slurs against oriental people 'better' than against black people? It seemed a cowardly act in an otherwise brave film.

Despite this it's still well worth a watch.'

I am glad to see this isn't a topic slating the Welsh

Lol, you've been doing some digging to find this thread. I started this thread when I was really drunk, trying to find other IW fans.

Trainspotting 2 is in the pipeline............

It was McGrath that found it, above me. LOL. Not I. I am not guilty. Look at McGrath date and time. I came in Witton and there it was. I didn't look at when it was posted, until you just said. :15:
