Inmates offered reduced sentences for birth control procedure

A judge in the US state of Tennessee is offering to reduce jail sentences for any inmate that volunteers to undergo a birth control procedure.

Since Judge Sam Benningfield signed the legal order in May, 32 women and 38 men have volunteered in exchange for 30 days shaved off their sentence.

I'm actually torn by this.

On one hand it's almost brilliant, but on the other it seems it's applied across the board so likely taken up as a way to reduce a sentence by 30 days with no actual real understanding or rhyme and reason behind the decision taken.

So there's not actually the forethought to achieve bellends not procreating OR importantly allowing those potential parents who certainly should not raise a child from becoming a parent.

It's not permanent admittedly but if the aim is to encourage personal responsibility surely this should be being offered alongside an education programme or something like that to really help people turn their lives around.

Anything that stops stupid people breeding is ok in my book. Helping keep the population down isn't a bad thing either. We've got to make some tough decisions about procreation if we are to survive and keep this planet habitable.

Remember, we are just another species on a planet called Earth.

Well cuts have to be made, just as well start with the testicles.

A couple of housebricks are also known to have the desired effect........

Or it could be just a little prick......

not sure how long the procedure works, like you MF, little bit mixed on this. Might though give them a chance (those who want a chance) to get their lives sorted before looking to bring more people to this mad old planet of ours.

For men it's a vasectory (sp) which can be reversed, for women it's an implant in the arm which can have a 6-12 month shelf life I think.

So it's not a permanent permanent fix, so would work as a buffer for an ex con trying to get their life back on track, family relationship, work etc without then deliberately or accidentally complicating things with a pregnancy.

But without the associated education or grounding in why they are taking that decision, it's an easy way to reduce the sentence.

For it to work there has to be that understanding in my humble and the decision is taken to be responsible without it just naturally reducing your sentence.

Don't stop them spreading cock rot and fanny fungus.

Is it likely that unprotected sex would increase within the group accepting the treatments?

Reducing births but potentially increasing the risk of sexually transmitted desease and infection because they feel they're protected?

yeah, suppose it would have to be the vasectomy wouldn't it? They are reversible but not always 100%... with that said, not all work 100% either.

I'm surprised they've not started culling the working classes really!

Stop stealing my ideas!!!!!!!!

I had hoped we'd learn as time goes on, but we have the same problems of too many kids to families who shouldn't have them. My mum's neighbours have 3 kids, one with learning difficulties. They're on benefits, and spend all day shouting and sweating at the kids. They locked the one with learning difficulties out for 45 minutes the other day. Someone called Social Services, thankfully. They probably wouldn't be allowed a fog. Oh, and they're grossly overweight.

Would the World really miss them?

Watching them (The Flubs) would be more entertaining than most of the shit on telly, are you planning a Christmas DVD Heath?

One of the issues which we (humans) face is a falling population in the developed world. Last year, adult nappies outsold baby nappies in Japan. Europe isn't far behind.

The population boom which gets all the publicity is in Africa and India where population density is already high.

I think most of us would agree that a falling population is a good thing. More space, less people to share the limited resources on the planet and it would be better for the environment too. Unfortunately, there is a huge downside. Having fewer and fewer people paying into the social welfare system and more and more depending on it is a recipe for disaster. That's the issue which really concerns the politicians.

How do you know these things? :19:

I'm more concerned who is having these kids in the West. It is possible our intelligence level could drop, and I think we need every bit of brain power possible to save us.

The assumption that stupid people have stupid kids is wrong. In the same way, rich people don't necessarily have smart kids.

We should be aiming our society towards equality of opportunity so that the smart people lead the less smart, regardless of who their parents are/were.

To some extent you're right, but the probabilities are greater. Its also about the opportunities they will get for a proper education. Support from the parents and an attitude that values education is essential.

Contraception worldwide is a must. Allowing uncontrolled populations in countries with drought and famine is just idiotic.

That's my point. Opportunities for a proper education should be open to all. Support for children in difficult family environments should be available too. That's not just as a social objective but as an economic one too.

I have a friend who is a conspiracy theorist. His children haven't been vaccinated and his seven year old son can't read independently because he can't send his children to 'normal' school because they haven't been vaccinated. His wife is a lawyer. She's a very nice lady but she's not very smart. I'd guess that she got a good education because her parents pushed her through it and then paid for a private college for her to study law. Having stupid lawyers is not a desirable outcome for society.

Opportunities should be available to all, I agree. I still think many smart kids will get lost because the parents don't care, or worse have a negative attitude towards education.

I think any cult, whether it's infowars or Christianity, should never be forced upon children. It's tantamount to child abuse. Let them make their own minds up when they're old enough. Until then, teach them all sides.
