Huge asteroid set to wipe out life on Earth - in 2880

A huge asteroid spinning at an "impossible" rate is hurtling toward Earth, on track to wipe out human life - but not until 16 March, 2880.

Asteroid 1950 DA has a one-in-300 chance of hitting the globe on the appointed day. Although that may sound like slim odds, it is the most likely asteroid to collide with our planet.

Researchers at the University of Tennessee are not taking any chances, studying the asteroid for indications of how best to throw it off its course.

According to their research, published in the science journal Nature, the asteroid has a diameter of one kilometre and is travelling at nine miles a second relative to the Earth.

It is also rotating so fast - once every 2 hours and six minutes - that it "defies gravity". Rotation at that speed should cause the space rock to fly apart, but cohesive forces called van der Waals are holding it together. These forces have never before been detected on an asteroid.

Were it to make contact with the planet, it would hit at 38,000 miles per hour, exerting the same force as around 44,800 megatonnes of TNT.

An impact would cause an enormous explosion and tsunamis, changing the climate of the globe and destroying human life.

The researchers are confident that there is enough time to avert the disaster. They have discovered that blowing up 1950 DA could actually do more harm than good, causing several massive impacts.

Instead, they suggest making small changes to its surface to disrupt the forces that keep it together, causing it to break apart.

VDW forces on that sort of scale! Never came across that before.

It's was only a matter of time until this sort of thing was scheduled to happen, I guess there will be plenty of people who already had plans for this long before it was seen.

Why don't we just move?
What do you mean? Move Earth or move people from earth?

If we move from earth, where do we go to? And transporting 6 billion people is no mean feat. Especially when they'd need to be moved and then have facilities to accommodate life for all of them..

If you meant move earth...even if we did have the ability to move something of the mass of earth a big enough distance to be out of the way of the astroid..that would seriously affect our climate anyway just like the astroid hitting would do. And would we survive such a change?

Religion will see to us, before an asteroid.

To be honest, a rational human (- debatable) being believing in laughable ghosties and vehemently spouting total garbage to try and assimilate fellow susceptible humans, can do one.

History erase button please. These people are not for mankind. They are everything we are trying to move away from.
FCUK RELIGION!!
Of all kinds.

Every major species on earth gets wiped out at some stage, we will be know different.

My money is on us using a nuke, set the fecker off before it makes contact with it, and hope for the best. There is little we can do for anything like this.

Feck knows what technology we'd have at our disposal 800 years odd into the future.

That's if the technology we've already got doesn't wipe us all out before then.

Shit. The grand opening for the new stadium is March 17th, 2880.

LOL :1: :1:

That's the 34th New Stadium, the biggest in the UK and the one we will retain our 780th league title in.

If we aren't beyond our planetary system by then, we'd probably have close to exhausting all Earth's natural resources, so the outcome will be mute anyway...

Happy days :10:

"The researchers are confident that there is enough time to avert the disaster."

I'd like to think that 800+ years is enough time.

Where's Bruce Willis when you need him?

This one is up to Chris Pine.

Probably wouldn't have even landed on Mars by then lol. Fingers crossed this happens in my life time....

The chances of us humans ever leaving the solar system are very slim. Considering our closest star is 4.24- 4.37 light years away 24 and a bit trillion miles away it just shows how big space is.

Invent a space ship that can go the speed of light and I might change my mind. ;-)

Maybe the trick is to play that crap Areosmith song at the astroid, might blow it up. :17:
