Huge two games for Lovell personally

Vital Champions League
So Lovell has "demanded" a response. Nowhere to hide if the next two games are as poor as the recent performances. He won't get the sack as he just signed a two year deal but a poor end to this season (even if we stay up) will mean a summer of doom and gloom. A poor start to next season and he will be under pressure from the get go - in the same way Pennock was. The difference is that Lovell had a purple patch and won us over as fans. The question is was that a freak set of results or can he recover it ? Recent home games (Blackburn aside where expectations were of a defeat) have been as poor as Pennock in my view.

So will the team respond to Lovell demands or will we get more of the same.

I have a feeling he'll be gone by Christmas. Not really his fault as the team is full of league two players and I include Parker, Eaves, Hess, Nugent, Ogilve, Byrne, O'Neil and others in that statement. We have bench of non league quality in Nash and List woh seem unlikely to have any influence when coming off the bench.

We play hoofball and concede possession the moment we go behind.

Lets hope Lovell can bring in better in the summer but most of the poor performers are still under contract for next season so we can't expect wholesale changes.

I think we all want Lovell to succeed he's easy to back as one of our own, but lets be honest if Evans had come in and we had the same results then the knives would have been out long ago.

To be honest Lovells best chance of success next season would be to go down this but no one wants that.

Lets get the point we need to stay up and then lets get another poor season closed and hopefully progress in the summer.

Problem is there are precious few signs of that glimmer that next season might be better.

Lovell has demanded a reaction so many times this season and nothing has happened, I cant see that changing.

IF we do get a result or even a point if will be a fluke, the key to progress is to get a consistent decent performance and we have been consistently worse than poor. No one minds if we loose but have played well and given a decent game but we have failed at so many levels its hard to see how we can move forward.

I agree that SL wont last but he has to take some blame as he has been part of the coaching set up for some time and will have had a say in signings and past performance.

Pass that buck again,Paul, I mean Durham.

Pay league two wages, get League two players. Until Scally gives any manager a decent budget then it will be a struggle for any manager over any length of time.

Having said that, if this squad of players perform as they have done recently I think a lot of them might be looking for new employment before SL.

Are people seriously writing off SL before the season has even finished let alone the summer or new one started and before SL has even had the chance to build his own squad. When do we get off the manager merrygoround and actually have some faith in a manager and back him with a competitive budget AND time.

Eventually we would find something to agree on Durham :-)

Problem is part of the key to progress is to invest in decent raw materials and sadly that's the issue. Unless Scally can find the funds to give him a decent transfer budget we will be signing league two / non league quality again. Some of the non league quality comes good but you have to sign a lot to find the diamond in the rough. We've been luck with the likes of Gazanigga and probably Holy next but we need a real investment strategy like Peterborough have. They snap up the better non league players and regularly turn them into good money. We'll get the odd youth team player come good like Dack but you sometimes need to spend a bit (like we did with Simeon Jackson) to generate a bit. Hoping to get lucky on free transfers only works so far.

Sadly Scally seems unable to do that anymore so unless we have a change of tact it seems the summer will be full of Rhys Wilmotts and Elliott Lists rather Simeon Jacksons.

We might get lucky but more likely another season of struggle.

Its nothing personal to Scally but if we really want to progress (to the point of needing a new ground) we need fresh ownership with the ability to invest (gamble) a bit.

We aren't getting relegated, what's to be unhappy about

If that's how you define a good season then absolutely nothing.

I was hoping for a bit more though, decent football, more than four home wins, exciting games, that kind of thing.

The budget is dictated but how much money we have as a club - as its not as if we have huge balance in a bank account and PS is not releasing it.

Its about time fans accepted the limitations of the club compared with the income - for the foreseeable future we will always have a budget in the lower half of league 1. With Sunderland still getting parachute payment from the premiership the gap between the top budget and the lower ones will be very wide.

Its us the fans that demand success and drive the manager merrygoaround - its us that call for the managers head and SL will be in danger if we dont get a good start next season

Wayne goes to Dreamland every now and then.

I'll just be happy to stay up. I really think we have a few youngsters (eg Oldaker,Chapman) who'll surprise a few next season. Shame we couldn't play them recently.

Maybe Nasseri too - he's got ability but liable to give the ball away.

Why is our budget one of the worst in league one though? I can only see about 6 teams in the league that have been historically 'bigger' than us, if we're now behind so many similar sized clubs financially it's because we've been poorly run for so long.

Who said our is one of the worst in the league?

Even clubs like Walsall have a bigger budget than us - noting to do with how the club is run

We fans are becoming harder to please at Gillingham and elsewhere. I don't expect us to spend foolishly to then crash and burn, which means that we are one of the underdogs. Survival was always the aim this season but the entertainment, especially at home, has been below par. I rate Lovell higher than Durham does but getting a succesful team together and managing them well is a big ask at our club just now, whoever has the job.

I can get as carried away as the next fan but thinking dispassionately our hopes for next season in order of priority might be:

Staying up
Playing some decent football and entertaining the home fans
Bringing on some youngsters and continuing the development of others
A cup run of some sort

If we want to be greedy we might add a big money sale and a top 10 finish.

Hang on that doesn't make sense. If the manager is responsible for results then the CEO/Owner/Chairmen (and everyone else on the board) has to be responsible for the growth of the company and funding the development of the core product - which in our case is hopefully still a football team.

A new stadium perhaps?

Unless you get to the prem or are funded by a wealthy owner, football is all about survival these days.

Mark what a load of bollocks you spout.
We are a club with limited resources, we have a average 5000 following and nobody rushing to invest.
Scally has kept this club going and kept us in the league unlike some clubs I remember seeing at Gills e.g. Tranmere, Stockport, Chester, Southport, Aldershot.
Lower your expectations we have done the Championship, been to Wembley 3 times and been in 4 play off finals.
