How much longer can this transfer madness continue?

Alert Team
Just when you think the Premier League could not get any madder or more disgustingly gluttonous, the 20 clubs go and spend around £3.44billion between them on 154 players. The hyper-inflation in fees is beyond any realistic predictions; we have had some truely mad deals, so at the risk of just roasting our own club for paying some astonishing fees, what the maddest you spotted and what does it say about the people making these decisions?

I'll start:

Liam Delap, Chelsea to Nottingham Forest

reported transfer fee: £50m (with add-ons)

Contract length: Five years

Make it make sense:

A striker with more yellow cards (33) than goals (27) to his name in senior football, who netted two goals in 41 appearances for Chelsea last season after a massive, life-changing £30million move on a six-year contract, and failed to score in his final 26 matches for the club, is rewarded with a £50m move and a five-year contract? Nope, sorry, not having this one.

He may reproduce his Ipswich Town form, he may be rejuvenated under Nottingham Forest coach Oliver Glasner, but given the aforementioned facts, we have to mark this down, initially, at least, as the epitome and poster boy for Summer Transfer market madness...Chelsea's eight sporting directors must be rolling on the with legs and arms in the arm wetting themselves....

Ok, who are your 'madness deals?'

I dont think this is mad, Chelsea got him on the cheap, when his value should have been higher when they signed him

He is young and I think he is decent

Richi was 55, Solanke was 65.

3.44 billion is actually a bit yuck. I hope it somehow filters down to the bottom of the tree.

He scored 2 goals, and you think he is worth £50 mill?! Every Chelsea fan I known thought they'd have to give him away!

In the past 2 seasons he scored more PL goals than Solanke, who is apparently worth 65 million and 1 less than Richi who is worth 55 million....

Can't really judge players on their time at the Chelsea mad house.

added - the 2 previous seasons before we signed Solanke, he hit 25 PL goals, so 10 more, so not much of a different than Delaps stats, given 1 season was for Ipswich and the other he hardly played

The PL has become a super league all of it's own making, nearly £1.8 billion of that was spent between themselves. Less and less is being spent in other leagues (traditionally, where all the big bucks went every summer).
Those other leagues simply don't cut it. The blood & guts of the PL is in a league of its own, hence the circling vultures.

35m for Romero

125m for Fernandez

Make that make sense
Romero had no suitors, except one and his agency had let it be known he was not interested in going anywhere else - every other media clickbait was just nonsense and given his nonsense/injuries and shenanigans for us and his performance infreqency, they could drive his value down, which they did, and he got a huge 'signing on bonus'.

Seriously, no one wanted him.

At some point the money vultures will turn their attentions to a different league - one where they can maximise profits with less investment.

The premier league and everything that comes with it has pretty much squeezed the life out of the English game.

My view is that Seria A will be seen as the next cash cow at some point.

And the money will soon follow.

They owe us big time. I'd be coming back looking favours.

I agree with this. He was at the wrong club. He will look good value in 12 months time

Spence going to Inter for pennies when Liverpool and a few other clubs are crying out for fullbacks but stayed away from bidding. It’s like they would prefer to spend 2x/3x on some one with a foreign name

I think the Bindippers are smart cookies.
I don't think that under the yanks they have gotten too many signings wrong.
There was obviously something in his profile that they didn't like.

I put up a post from UTube on Spence, I think it's on the Transfers thread, worth listening to.
It's a lot to do with his professionalism and attitude, in short I think he got himself a bad name. Give it a view.

I'm sure Daniel Levy would agree that the whole transfer system has become money madness. It's obscene.
The Spurs Double team players achieved everything and received a pittance for their success.
Today's players receive obscene financial rewards whether they achieve anything or not..
What the fuck happened in between? (rhetorical). Oh, yeah .... the football game became a money game.
Meanwhile, not only in third world countries .......

It is free market economics gone crazy.

To be fair to Sugar, he argued that increasing TV revenues would ultimately filter down to transfer fees and huge salaries - he was right. Other than taking a percentage of the TV money and ringfencing it for player welfare, stadium improvements etc etc you won't stop what we are seeing. You can't regulate the spending and if you implemented transfer fee limits, salary caps or whatever, the agents will always find a way to circumvent the regulation. How many industries charge "administration fees, management fees" etc. There is seldom a straight deal for fair value, it's just the necessary numbers to make it happen and keep happy those related parties that earn from the deal. I bet if you really followed the money trail to where it ultimately ended up the results would be most surprising. To quote from JFK, it's an enigma wrapped inside a riddle and I guess most of us will never get to know all the nuances that take place.

The players compound the problem. Most are not the sharpest chisels in the set and simply want "more" with no real understanding of whether they actually merit the reward. Well he's on so much and I'm better than him so.

Those years ago when the bin dippers were 48 hours away from going under, I suggested it would be the best thing for this league for one of the big clubs to fail. I still believe that (also slightly tainted by a loathing of the despicable vermin).

Money talks, or in this case, shouts. My business works in an industry that revolves around willing buyer and willing seller. If someone offers 30% more than you feel something is worth, it's inevitable that you will most likely take it. And with that we go up the escalator a bit more.
