How Do We Sum Up This Season?

Vital Champions League
There'll be some conflicting opinions on this. Some points of promise but a great deal of disappointment as well. The high points for me were the stability brought about by Bruce after the chaos of RDM. and the form of Kodjia, Jedinak and Hutton. Disappointments were Grealish failing to really impose himself, the poor contribution from midfield and the inability of the team to dominate games. I didn't expect promotion straight away given the low base we were coming from but at least I've gone to games with more of an expectation of seeing us win.
This year consolidation, next season playoffs at least.

This season has been a massive disappointment and a complete calamity.

Again I'm glad to see the back of a season yet again.

Agreed. Massively disappointing and actually quite alarming still. I mean, if it wasn't for Kodjia's goals, were the hell would we of finished up?

Shite, under par and totally predictable.

Losing to the likes of Barnsley, Brentford etc has set some new lows.

If the Bristol titties had managed a last minute equaliser today then things might have been so much better.

A season that promised little and failed to disappoint, I honestly thought we were going to do a Wolves and go down two divisions in two seasons.

Not good enough by far, but about where I thought we'd probably end up.

The good run when Bruce arrived papered over a multitude of problems and lack of quality, and this was laid bare in January and February when Kodjia was at the AFCON. Even the decent run through March and early April which revived play-off hopes for some masked how bang average (at best) we really are.

I expected mid-table at the start of the season to be honest, so can't say I have been disappointed in that.

Next season is a different matter altogether. The rot has been stopped. Money has been (and will be) spent, so top 6 minimum next season. It really should be automatic though for the outlay.

A mundane measure of midtable mediocrity and marginal meliorism.

Loving the alliteration BBJ :1:

Thanks, JPA. I really have too much time on my hands! :14:

Better than last season. That was still my lowest ebb.

Could've been worse, many predicted and had concerns about back to back relegations

Didnt expect promotion because of the mess, but still should've been alot better.

Totally not good enough.

A slight improvement on last years "totally unacceptable" but not much

At the age of 46 and being taken at the age of 5 to the Villa, we have finished in the worst position ever in my 41 years as a supporter.

So i am not particulatly happy with them and for themoney we paid and for the wages they are on I expect at least an improvement of 11 places next season

Nowhere near as bad as last season. Xia and the new club organisation has put the club on a path away from the stinking mire of Lerner's final years. That alone is worth a lot.

Never thought we'd be relegated again. Expected it to be patchy, but reckoned mid-table was probably about the minimum we'd end up at. Never changed that view, even under RDM. Could see us having a good second half of the season with the playoffs at least in our sights, but that didn't happen.

Big disappointment is that I expected a clear sign of an effective playing style to emerge by the end of this season. That hasn't happened either. Today in fact there was a glimmer of hope; still a lot of problems to sort out, but Lansbury, Hourihane and Bree were looking more comfortable in the way things were set up. Is it a sign of something good to come, or flattering to deceive? We really should have been at this stage a couple of months ago.

Hoped we'd be fully ready and organised for next season by now. We're not, and that's worrying.

However, I'm impressed with Xia. Strikes me as a bright, enthusiastic owner with a good sense of judgement. When something needs to be done, whether it's players in, players out or manager change, he'll do it. Having the right club management with resources to back it up should be a big plus in times ahead; in that respect we're the giant of the Championship. Hope it counts.

Never going to iron it all out after the last few years at VP: you can't put it alright over night even with a new owner in place. Middle table obscurity is about what I expected.

Next season has to be different. I expect us to be promoted next season. People will say ''we don't have a divine right''

No we don't, however as it is the fans that help to pay for the inflated wages and millionaires lifestyle then in that respect I think we have a right to be heard

This season was always going to be difficult, and it proved to be the case. It could have been worse.

Most fans accepted it under the circumstances and it's out of the way now.

There is no way in hell it will be acceptable next season. Xia said so, Bruce knows it, and hopefully the players do too.

Fulford - 7/5/2017 21:12

Again I'm glad to see the back of a season yet again.

I'm not.

Next weekend laying new decking.

Weekend after painting new decking.

Until August.. God knows what's in store for me to do.

I miss the football season already.

On reflection I have had mixed emotions since the departure of Lerner and the arrival of Dr X. Wasn't sure that RDM was the right manager, but I was hopeful that he could instil an attacking brand of football, Elphick looked a good signing at the time and they kept rolling in, fuelling the optimism. In truth, many of the acquisitions came too far into the transfer window and we were unable to get rid of all those guilty of disgracing the shirt last year. Still Crespo, Guzan, Lescott, Okore, Richardson, N'Zogbia was not a bad start. Was sad to see Sinclair, Clark & Traore go but understood that this is a business.

What none of us could envisage was the continued lethargy within the ranks and the abject failure of McCormack, Gollini (always a risk) and after a bright start Elphick - three of the new "spine".

Further outs and ins in January lead to renewed optimism but proved to be a false dawn.

The positives for me have been the injection of enthusiasm of Dr X and Wyness. They have kept us informed, told us in no uncertain terms just how broken Aston Villa FC was and have started to implement a total restructure of the club staff and players. While Steve Bruce would not be anyone's first choice manager, he comes with a solid resume of achieving promotion. I have the belief that the summer transfer window will see the end of the Lerner era, with virtually all of the "senior" pro's from that era, gone or side-lined.

What can we expect from next season? You cannot underestimate the lethargy that has surrounded the club over the last few years. For me it starts with the work undertaken during the transfer window and the ruthless removal of all those associated with the Lerner years. As critical will be the quality of the players we can attract and the effect they will have on the squad and around training. I expect a hard working, no nonsense squad in the image of Steve Bruce, but if he can find a Christophe Dugarry or another Paul McGrath we can realise our lofty expectations.

For me, a transitional year. Many said it after Xia bought us not to expect too much too soon, but as football fans we let our imagination and emotions take over. A lot of the building blocks are now in place at the club and I for one will dare to dream again.

Fulford - 7/5/2017 21:12

This season has been a massive disappointment and a complete calamity.

Again I'm glad to see the back of a season yet again.

A bit over the top in my opinion.

Yes we all wanted to get promoted, and finishing so far off the play offs is quite poor, but a "complete calamity" it is not.

Last season when we got 17 points all season - now that's a complete calamity. Realistically we were always going to have a tough season in trying to complete overhaul on and off the pitch and we've ended up have a difficult season. We need to improve for next season, that's for sure though

The biggest worry for me is the lack of improvement under Bruce.

I really really wanted him. Really rate him, and really want him to stay... but I'd have expected to see small signs of improvement by now but we don't seem to be playing very well even when we were winning games.

Hopefully a full pre-season will make a big difference.

In terms of the 'sums' we need 20% more next season. What we achieved was 45% of the points available whereas the Barcodes achieved 65%. If we are to achieve automatic promotion we will need 90 points and that is the 20% improvement.
Can Bruce and Xia extract another 20% - I hope so.
Can the players that we have achieve another 20% - I don't think so.
I am sure that Bruce and Xia are already looking to see where and how they can close what in reality is a significant gap.

I'd not say 13th in the Prem is a success so this sure as hell isn't.

Massive improvement needed from the get go next season, we can't afford a 3rd season in the Championship.
