Though I don't particularly like the guy, I have to say that this report from Rio Ferdinand makes a lot of sense and though all that is says may not be particularly right, there's something there that has a semblance of truth. I suspect it's the immaturity of a young side and inexperience that is our problem and that youthful exuberance is not the only thing we need. Effort and 'push' with a good set of skills are not the only things we require to hit the top big time, as I think we are soon about to do.
I don't think we should over stress our young players by barracking them into an intense and nervous mood but just to train them and let them enjoy themselves, dare I say it, as Harry would likely have done. Enjoyment of what they do should be paramount so I think we have gone down the right route.
Ferdinand has set about trying to analyse it, suggesting a few more ideas too and I found this report of what he said:
"Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand believes Tottenham Hotspur need more leadership within the ranks at White Hart Lane if they are to secure major silverware.
'Mauricio Pochettino’s men fell short for the seventh consecutive time in the FA Cup semi-final, setting a new unwanted record following the North London side’s 4-2 defeat to Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
The second-placed Premier League outfit host a number of top-flight stars, including Harry Kane and the PFA Young Player of the Year winner Dele Alli, however the 38-year-old, six-time league winner believes Spurs are still missing a key ingredient to success.
“You need leaders on that pitch who have been over that line and said ‘you know what, I know how to get through the finish line’,” Ferdinand stated on BT Sport Football’s official Twitter account.
“I don’t see one of them at the moment. They need to get over that finish line; someway, somehow, to get their hands on a trophy.
“It seems at the moment they’re getting to the edge and not getting over there.”
Tottenham’s trophy drought now extends to nine years following their latest exit, with next season likely to be Spurs’ first opportunity in curbing their baron spell since becoming League Cup champions in 2008.
The North Londoners could still secure their first Premier League trophy, however they currently sit four points behind league leaders Chelsea, with the Blues holding a considerably easier run-in than their nearest challengers.
But Pochettino’s youngsters will be able to fight for silverware on four fronts again next term, and will be hoping that strengthening throughout the summer will allow for an even better showing in their search for success."
He's possibly right and though it's in the back my mind that he's a former Mank, I need to be fair in thinking about his points. Maybe we DO need more leaders (or preferably 'leader' to cut out confusion) and maybe he's right in saying that we need more on the pitch to take the initiatives and push us over the line of hitting the top. Either way the guy does have a hell of a lot of experience at winning trophies (grrrrr). But I will say that his report even though he spells barren 'baron' and invents a new word 'someway' doesn't seem biased and does sound truthful. Even it were criticism, we need to fairly listen to criticism because we can learn from it.
He does call the team 'youngsters' and that affirms what I said myself and I suppose that's the crux of his comments, experience is needed.
But as he also says, next season we have another opportunity for winning trophies so the guy's being quite fair and we CAN push over the line, we've had yet another season of being at the top and could STILL make It to a trophy. Next season we will be even more experienced and less nervous if that has played a part before, it certainly appeared so last season.
So thanks for the comments RIO, you can fly off back to your perch and watch this space, personally I think Pochettino has it in hand and the players are getting better and better but I do think you can see what the rest are seeing, that THFC are making a huge impact and a club for the future, seem familiar to your experience?
