HMRC 'Judge And Jury' On Taking Money From Your Account, Experts Warn

George Osborne's plan to let the taxman search thousands of Britons' bank accounts for unpaid taxes has drawn concern from experts for its lack of oversight.

An estimated 17,000 people will have their accounts raided each year by officials, HM Revenue & Customs said in a new consultation about how the scheme would work.

Osborne outlined the new powers for HMRC in his March Budget, which MPs branded a "mad idea that should have been strangled at birth".

The measure, which has been described as "unprecedented", would allow the taxman to take unlimited amounts of money from individuals' bank accounts without their permission or a judge's approval if officials believe more than £1,000 in unpaid tax is owed.

Some experts have warned that the plan, which is billed as a measure to tackle tax dodgers, is potentially illegal.

They are so incompetent, that is what worries me.

They said we owed three thousand, we didn't. We didn't pay at accountants say so.

They then refunded us 1500 ish quid we weren't due. I didn't want to cash but accountant said we would have to as it would count as having been paid to us anyway.

So if we owed 3000 and they owed us 1500 why didn't they take that off what we owed leaving just a 1500 debt.

Worrying if they can just access to take money not owed.

Had a similar experience with one of my clients, Fear. I spent the whole of last year telling them she didn't owe them £1,200, but they kept insisting. They finally admitted I was right.

This would be a nightmare. Another one of Osbourne's blunders. He really is handing Labour the next election if he carries on like this.

I ended up paying heathfield, we had the money in our tax fund for the end of year so just gave up!

For those who have the money and refuse to pay its a good idea. As Sir Den said I don't think it'll concern me.

This affects everybody. HMRC make mistakes. Putting those mistakes right will cost money, and who will pay this eventually?

If it's through the Courts, then fine, but giving them the authority directly would be a disaster.
