A group of modern humans that arrived in Eurasia far earlier than previously thought also had sex with Neanderthals, according to a study that redraws the migratory timeline for our species.

The new research, published in Nature, provides the first genetic evidence that some Homo sapiens left the African continent at least 100,000 years ago, tens of thousands of years earlier than widely assumed.

The smoking-gun proof came not from human fossils but a single Neanderthal whose remains were found in a cave in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia, near the Russian-Mongolian border.

Embedded in the genome of the ancient caveman - in chromosome 21, to be precise - were traces of human DNA.

It is quite obvious that we should treat the Neanderthal as lacking the intelligence of "modern man" so were the Neanderthal capable of making an informed decision on who to have sex with, I can only reach the conclusion that the Neanderthal were abused by "modern humans" the question is, how to categorise the crime, is it bestiality? Or just rape?



 
They lived very similar lives, Neanderthal man would have lived in similar groups, had language, had tools like axes, hammers and spears, there's evidence that they buried their dead and a suggestion that they may have married out their daughters. They probably sailed some sort of canoe, some built shelters and the ones that chose to live in caves painted them and they cooked their meat and veg, wore and made clothes and made ornaments. Does this really sound that much different to homo-sapiens at the time?

Now, I've seen different reports on their cranium capacity, some say bigger but I think the brain is different so Neanderthal man had more developed areas of the brain that deal with sight and spacial awareness so were probably better at different things.

We inherited many traits from Neanderthals, possibly straight hair, red hair, chron's disease, diabetes, fair skin, freckles.

There were other types of humans living at the same time as us, Devonians, possibly the red deer cave people, Homo floresiensis. We probably mated with these. When we finally sequence some of the older species, I think you'll find they all interbred to some degree and I don't doubt that well find other species that Co-existed.

I think I read somewhere that 2% of European and Asian human DNA is attributed to Neanderthal. That's a lot, I doubt this was through abuse. They were certainly stronger than us.

I read a theory once about how we choose our partners and we pick someone dissimilar to us as a mechanism to avoid inbreeding. Usually not too dissimilar but lust is a powerful emotion. Also if I'm not mistaken I don't think we've found evidence of Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA in humans which I think means no human man Neanderthal female mating so it would mean the only fertile hybrids would have come from human women and male Neanderthal so who's abusing who?

No matter how hanus a crime some cultures or regimes have made interracial relationships in modern man, man hasn't stopped falling in love with others of different races. What makes anyone think it would be different in this case? OK so there is a bigger difference than just race but they were similar enough for us to be able to successfully mate and could communicate, probably would have learned each it hers language but even that wouldn't matter, lust would be enough. They were not just animals, they were other humanoids, the term species is a grey term used to make pigeon holing animals easier but life really doesn't work like that it's been argued that they are just a sub-species like an Indian elephant is a subspecies of Asian elephant or Bengal and Siberian tiger.

It's no different from a polar and grizzly bear mating and they do.

I think the question is, would we find each other attractive enough to have consensual sex? I'm not sure but it seemed to have happened.

People from Papua new guinea are estimated to have 10% Devonian DNA in a study I'd read. 10%!. If found to be true, our mating with other species/sub-species isn't exclusive to Neanderthal.
 
There is lots of evidence to suggest they were as intelligent as our ancestors at the time the co-existed. The tools they used, the fact they buries their dead and cared for their sick, the size of their brains. Maybe it was focused in different directions, and ultimately these traits they had did not help them survive, but I don't think they were stupid.

It is common to compare them to today's humans, but what you need to do is compare them to the other hominids around at the time.

Also, consider this. Neanderthals were around for about 500,000 years. We've only been here for about 40,000.
 
They were also perfectly adapted to their environment having lived there longer so I could see that it's quite possible they would have been intriguing to early humans arriving into Europe. We don't know why they didn't survive but may have lived in smaller groups and had a smaller overall population. It's quite possible the the range they covered was just too vast with so few and either mated into home-sapien societies with limited success or interbred. I think breeding may have been a problem as it is in all cross-species breeding and inbreeding and may have produced some infertile offspring but nonetheless it did happen, their DNA is in us. It seems we had more success potentially with Devonians although we know less about them. It will be interesting to see what research comes from this group over the next decade.

It's interesting you mention god. If Neanderthal man practiced ceremonial burial, did they believe in a god or are the two completely unrelated?
