High Street Stores & Other Businesses At Risk

DW Sports the latest to announce trouble. Was heading out the door when the report came on so don't know if it's partial store closure or heading towards complete admin, but that's going to be another stack of jobs.

Starting to look it is going to be a bloodbath really isn't it?

So many closing in the Kingfisher Centre, which then decreases the footfall and will risk others.

A few haven't re-opened, H.Samuel has gone, Body Shop after 20 years has closed, there are so many empty shops now. As for the high street, it is literally a row of open shops with just a coffee shop and charity shop left at the top end.

Even here in York its noticeable! Its so stark on some streets it like "woah" in one place it is 4 shops in a row that are empty. 10 shut within the same small area.

In our village attached to York Peacocks has not reopened. Notice on the door gives no idea when it will be open

Peacocks is one of many within the group of shops including Bon Marche, Edinburgh Wool Shop and others.

Not even all the charity shops have reopened in our village.

Our village looks better than York. There been a conserted effort over the years to keep the shops full in what is a busy high street in our larger village.

Alot of variant in it so we are lucky as quite a few independent shops including greengrocers, butcher, bakery, large store that sells everything which there is 6 of in the North, called Boyes, a small hardware store which does ok and has reopened too.

Along with a vape shop, usual loan shops, charity shops, specialist/generic, freezer shop, chemists and Morrisons.

Then there's the chippy, couple of cafes, estate agent and opticians[/QUOTE]

The last time we went there I was shocked at the bill at the end. Pizza is strictly takeaway only for us now.

I like to go to Prezzo to meet up with Rev Pete. Save my tesco vouchers (I use their credit card so the points stack up) and then get 3x the value of them. Pays my way pizza wise!

1500 jobs to go at WH Smiths now, bringing the total so far this week to 6000 jobs gone.

I personally think the only readon WH Smith survive is because they have a presence in train stations and airports.

Our WH Smith in York centre is never busy, even pre-covid19

WH Smith has always been one of those shops I never go in.
I know its somebodies job gone but I would not miss it one jot.

Why is it once Mike Ashley gets his grubby hands on a company it always turns to shit.
My wife went to get our youngest some stuff from Game which was on our High Street. When she got there it was derelict and had been moved to a little corner in his Sports Direct store.
Maybe the Government should block him from taking over anymore companies.

I always think M and S is for middle-class old people, now I'm getting to that age i still don't want beige slacks

Totally agree! The only thing that keeps M & S going is the food halls and coffee shops.

It was a shop my mom loved so as much ss I love my late mom there is not a chance you would get me shopping in there.

Food halls and coffee bars yes i have been in. The rest of it. Not a chance

Never tried to keep up I don't think, I don't even like their food, I find it overpriced and no better than elsewhere. Really staid brand, but like BHS was.

Their food is no different to the better chilled stuff you find in the supermarkets, and it shouldn't be as usually it comes from the same factories.

HAHA. I shall show my mom that. I keep telling her. She swears the chicken is better. It just isn't, it is simply packed differently! lol

I can't say it's across the board, but the white label 'supermarket branded stuff' does have tweaks to the recipes I think to produce them cheaper - but much like pills and medicine, when you're looking at the medium/high quality own brand stuff, it's is basically a carbon copy of another brand name as they produce it.

I think the recipe tweaks only apply to the true 'value/cheap' end of the supermarket brands.

It's all a con ultimately. I avoid brand names whenever I can because you really are paying more for the name, as opposed to quality.
