Shouldn’t matter what type of game it is Henderson should not be playing anymore for England. There are better players worthy of a place now, such as Ward Prowse, and compared to others such as Rice, he shouldn’t even be in the squad. He has had his time and Southgate should have used the game to look at someone else. I would be saying this if he was at Liverpool still but when you consider the level he is playing at now, even more strange/wrong/stubborn from Southgate.

Not quite what I meant, just Henderson has had his time. Don’t even know why we needed a player of that type, whoever it was, for a game against mighty Malta. What did he add last night ? Not that anyone else has as much better.

And who is he keeping out of the team?

At least he is experienced. I suppose it would be Guehi and Colwill otherwise as Stones seems to be playing in that weird semi-midfield role for Citeh.

Even at full back, we have the aging Walker and Trippier, plus the often injured James, Chilwell and Shaw.

That is why I do not see us as serious contenders for the World Cup or Euros. Defensively, we are pretty low in numbers and quality.

If we play to our strengths (which isn’t the Southgate way), then the defence shouldn’t matter. We need to play with the mentality that we’ll outscore the opposition. We will concede goals because we only have one top-class defender (Walker), but the others will do a good enough job if our attacking players do theirs.
 
Absolutely agree that Henderson shouldn’t be in the starting eleven (maybe even the squad). Maguire I can just about live with as there’s no-one else standing out to take his place (unlike Henderson, where there are plenty of candidates). However, Southgate should be using games like yesterday to try alternatives to both Maguire and Henderson. Qualification assured and he’s still playing “safe” 😫
