Heating On Or Off At Night?

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
Easy enough, do you have your heating on during the night or are you proper people who have the timer turn it off during your sleeping hours!?!?!

Heating off... I'm a man for goodness sake. You have a duvet don't you?!

Oh and window ajar.

Off, and sometimes window open as well. The body is meant to cool a little as a trigger to sleep.

Electric blankets are evil, and should be burnt. Getting into a cold bed is one of he best feelings.

Off!

We have oil, so can't be wasting it. I also have an electric oil heater in my bedroom which is great for the cold nights, and isn't bad on electricity. Even turned off half an hour before bed the room is still nice and warm.

Anyway, even if the bed is freezing your body heat warms it up after a few minutes

We live in a warm house. I tend to have the heating on for an hour just before we get up and then for an hour in the early evening. Tend not to need it more than that, rarely put it on anymore than that and even rarer to put the gas fire on. As for a cold bed, get the wife to warm it up first!

I sometimes run the air conditioning for an hour when I'm going to sleep. Otherwise, I never use it at home.

I live in Norway, if we turn the heating off it costs significantly more to heat the house up again than it does to just run the heating at night. That said, we have no heating in our bedroom and we have the door closed so the heat transfer from other rooms is minimal, in addition we sleep with the window open (most of the time, when it gets close to -10 degrees or colder then one of us normally closes the window during the night).

If anyone is interested in the money saving aspect, I have been informed by several heating engineers that anything up to a 4 degree drop in temperature is worth doing but more than that will use more energy to reheat than you initially save. Now of course this is just a general rule and will vary according to the efficiency of your heating and how good your insulation is but it's a decent guide. Rather than turning the heating off it's probably best all round to just set it at 4 degrees below your normal daytime temp at night and obviously the same applies during the day if no one is home.

We're on a timer upstairs and individual room thermostats downstairs.

So upstairs comes on for 2 hours between 06:00-08:00 so its warm when we wake up, and again for 4 hours from 15:00 till 19:00 so its warm in the evening.

Downstairs we just turn the thermostats up or down depending on if we're in the room, cold or warm.

Most certainly off.

We have a timer so the heating comes on 30 mins before we have to get up and it comes on for a couple of hours in the evening.

We sleep with the window open mostly , mind you it did stay shut last night.

Off.

I can't stand a bedroom which is too warm. I sleep quite poorly anyway, and if I'm too hot.....?

Not good.

Timer is set to come on 6-8.30am and 7.30-10.00pm. Little boost as and when.

Gas bill always seems rather high whatever!

on all day every day within a 1.5 degree range
(with none of this extreme left wing opening of windows when parky)

as votn mentioned above found gas usage marginally better (it seems) than switching off and getting a 4+ degree differential ymmv.

Heating off, window slightly ajar and ceiling fan on low

I have a wonky body thermometer I am can be freezing when it is boiling and vice versa.

Top half of me can be boiling, bottom half freezing at the same time and vice versa.

No nothing can be done about it. Live with it is pretty much the way of it

I need air movement hence ceiling fans down and uput are always on

Never have the radiator on in the bedroom, no point.

I do try to remember to turn the heating down when I go out but agree there, not totally off. I've a Hive so I'm morally superior anyway really !!!!

All joking aside, when I was a kid, my Dad would make a right old song and dance if we (ie my Mum) attempted to put the heating on before December. I think this is probably why I can handle the cold quite well. I much prefer to be too cold than too hot.

All together now.....My old man said "Turn the heating off"
I said "Bollocks, you're a ****!"

(That last bit didn't happen).

When I was a kid my life was much worse than yours, Juan!!! :39: :39: :39: :39: :19: :19: :19:

Seriously, all we had were log fires, one in the kitchen dinner and one in the living room. It was an old farm house (you can still see it from the M6 Toll road at Weeford), no double glazing or insulation.

I think it's why, like you, I struggle with being too warm.

One thing I really hate this time of year is going into very warm shops from the cold. I can only stay in there for a short period, before I start feeling queasy. If there is a big queue I just turn round and leave.
