Thomas Tuchel reveals Chelsea talks with Harry Kane representatives over summer transfer

Chelsea didn't get far in their pursuit of Kane but in Romelu Lukaku, Tuchel has a striker playing the best football of his career

By Matt Law, Football News Correspondent 17 September 2021 • 10:30pm

Harry Kane ultimately stayed at Spurs after his valuation was not met

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Chelsea held talks with Harry Kane’s representatives, even though he thought the Tottenham Hotspur striker would join Manchester City.
But Chelsea head coach Tuchel was pleased Kane stayed at Tottenham for the same reason he believes Romelu Lukaku has been the perfect fit for the Blues since returning to Stamford Bridge.
Tuchel publicly revealed his interest in Kane in May after the Tottenham star had made clear his desire to move and representatives of the 28-year-old had contacted Chelsea.
“We never had a list with his name on it and I never went to Marina (Granovskaia) to tell her to buy him,” said Tuchel. “But the club sorted out the situation. There are many people around players - their agents and advisors and people in between and we had some information from these people, but it was never that close.”
Kane and Lukaku will go head-to-head when Tottenham entertain Chelsea on Sunday and asked if he was relieved the England captain did not join City, Tuchel said: “I thought that this was going to happen.
“No I was not scared, but if it would have happened I would have been very interested in how maybe it would have changed Manchester City’s style of playing.
“We are not afraid of anyone. We accept any team and Manchester City, Man United and Liverpool, they are the teams strong like no other in this League and they have strong squads. These are the guys with whom we want to compete and it’s normal that they fight for the best players and I thought this was maybe going to happen.
“On one side, I was happy that he stayed because it is also nice that it exists in football that players play for one club only and so Harry Kane is Tottenham and even for me.
“I have absolutely nothing to do with Tottenham, I have never worked for them, but when I think about Tottenham in the last decade you think about Harry Kane and this is very nice. Like you think about Messi and straight away you think about Barcelona and it is very hard to think that he plays for another club now and that’s the same for Harry Kane.
“So from this side I was happy because I like it and a part of my personality is still a fan and I like that things like this happen. It is also nice that Romelu is back at Chelsea and some things are a good fit and should not be changed.”
Chelsea re-signed Lukaku for £97.5million from Inter Milan and Tuchel believes the Belgian is a different type of striker to Kane, despite the fact the pair are so prolific.
Tuchel said: “I find that Romelu plays a bit higher up the pitch and Harry Kane also likes to drop into number 10 positions, to pockets and turn and to assist. He has a super partnership with Son, so he is very strong in finding space between the lines. I find Romelu up higher in the pitch.
“But they also have similarities. They love to score and they score whenever they play, they are up for it and it is a certain mindset that you cannot learn. I am pretty sure they both started showing this mindset when they started playing football when they were five, six, seven years old.
“These guys are born to score goals and if they do not score they are not happy. Harry does everything for his team no matter if he plays for Tottenham or England, he is not shy to work defensively. He does what is needed to do, to defend set pieces and whatever. Romelu is the same, he is here to help us win titles. That is what big players do.”
Tottenham were one of the clubs interested in signing Antonio Rudiger last summer and the German is stalling on Chelsea’s offer of a new £140,000-a-week contract.
Rudiger could earn more than double his current £100,000-a-week wages by leaving Chelsea on a free transfer at the end of the season and Tuchel admitted he does not know if the central defender will re-sign.
“I hope that they find solutions, but it's not only between coaches and players, and what we wish for,” said Tuchel. “And that's why it's between the club, the player and the agent at the moment.
“I feel him very calm and focused, and it's not a distraction for him.
So everything is in place and give things the time they need. Sometimes it needs a bit longer, sometimes things are very fast.
“But in the end it's between him and the club, and that's in good hands. I am calm and relaxed, whatever has to happen will happen.”

Lukaku, another Jose victim. Could have had a long career at Chelsea.

Watch Lukaku....he works hard, his hold up play is top notch....he doesn't need great delivery to be effective.

Yup just another painful example of our failure in not selling Kane when we had the chance. (worth 150...my ass! I would have taken 100 plus a player...fairly certain we had an offer in that ballpark. Now...shit we will be lucky to get 80...he keeps up this form...his value will drop like a rock)

Try watching Lukaku closely. He doesn't even work that hard.

For most of their careers, Kane was the much harder worker. Now look at them.

If we had their midfield i,d runabout as well but unfortunately apart from Son he,s playing with a shower of shite

I am fed up with people slating Harry. You could put Ronaldo, Messi or even Ronaldo Nazario upfront for us and they would do know better. A striker needs service and our midfield does not provide any service. We don't want to see Harry chasing back in our area we want him upfront but then people moan he does not work. If he tracks back and the ball goes upfront people moan he is not in the right position. The poor bloke can't win. Nuno sets his team up for his striker's to fail

Watching a game right now. Ings, Watkins and Rondon haven't stopped working all game. 2 of them are older than Kane and none of them are fit to lace his boots.

So why is Harry such a precious little prick who thinks he doesn't have to work as hard as his fellow forwards in the Prem? He used to work as hard or even harder than most.

So feel free to be fed up with me, but I'll be the first to announce when his head is back on it. I was the first to call the opposite early in 2021. By the Eng vs Sco game in the Euro's, the entire country was talking about it.

If you watch they are all working hard upfront making runs getting into the box they are not back at the edge of there area just so they can get a touch. Harry does not get the ball in the areas he needs. It looks like he is not working because we create nothing all our play is from our area to the half way line. If it does go upfront it's to Lucas or berg who just run without creating anything. You put Harry in Liverpool team with tren and Robertson playing balls into him and you see a different Harry. Even in the Everton team with Gray and Andros he would look different. We are the least attacking team in the league. It's something I never thought I would say but we are. We have Son and Kane two of the best attackers in the world and at the other end we have not got the best defenders yet we play to the defensive strengths by just playing more and more defensive style player's. Harry has no chance of looking good in this team.

I get what you're saying, but there is a massive difference between looking good and working your arse off. That was my biggest beef with Harry watching him live in the Euros. He just wasn't showing for talented players that eventually became the second best international team in Europe. Those players couldn't hide their body language towards him, especially an experienced campaigner like Walker. In fact, as soon as Hendo came on you saw him telling Kane what to do. He assumed the leadership role and you could see who the real captain was. He wasn't standing for it as much as the kids did.

In football, it doesn't matter whether the tactics and formations are great or shite, the effort levels should never wane. That is, if you're being professional in your job.

As for the live game, I tuned out. The next part of my evening is supporting the Spitfires.

Youre theory of putting Kane in with better players kinda falls down when you look back at the euros. The likes of Stirling, foment, grealish and the rest we’re playing ping pong in the opposition box wondering when Kane would pull his finger out of his arse and joint them instead of sitting on the edge of the box ready for his Hollywood goal. You are correct, he needs service but it’s a chicken or egg thing. He has zero right to lower his work rate regardless of who is supplying him. He has no right to pace his fitness to last a whole game. He should work his nuts off minimum. When we see that he will 100% be exempt from criticism and we can move on to the people who are failing to supply him.

I agree for England he only showed up for the first half against Italy but at the end he got 4 goals and was our top scorer.
I am not saying I am happy with him I am saying it's not all his fault. You want him to get the ball to feet around the box but he is not getting that.
He does look a shell of the player now than he was for Poch. That is though Poch was more attacking and Poch and Harry had a bond. He respected Jose but it was not the same. I don't even think he has any faith in Nuno

Hence I said play with Trent and Robertson. Sterling and grealish are not the players Harry needs. Sterling takes to many touches to make his mind up. He is good at dribbling but not what gets the best out off Kane. Grealish is the same. Although better than Sterling not what Kane wants.
I agree there is something wrong with him he is 60% of the player of 4 seasons ago. Whether that is he has had no rest for 5+ season's or his ankles are limiting his work. I think he is not in his right mind. This has to do with Poch going and then his main supply chain Eriksen going. You can trace his drop in performance's back to the start of Pochs downfall and Eriksen saying he wants out. Then one of his best friend's nearly dying in the first game of the Euros did not help.Harry wanted out after the cl final but he did not want to let the club down as Poch was going and Eriksen wanted out. He didn't want to heap more rubbish on the club

I am going to be blunt here.

You've seen the best of Kane. I'll gladly swallow every dollop of the proverbial pie if he proves me wrong.

The damage is done. Nine months of low gear operation, poor handling of TW, tail between his legs return to the ire of many, City or any other club unlikely to be interested next window, we and he will end up honouring his contract. Only the fans lose out. IMO, he's not only pi$$ing off the fans but his team mates (Spurs and England) seem not too chuffed. Both camps have him as the un-droppable (captain) and the two managers are gutless for not running a meritocracy.

In his current mental and physical state, he ain't worth north of 100 mill. I await to hear what BS comments Levy will make re our DNA.

Don't get me wrong, nobody would have forgiven Kane for leaving after sticking it out since the heights of 2017 when we got 86 points. We all know the CL final was false flattery and was within the downward trajectory of the club as we fell from 86 points to 60 points.

What he must realise is that he is absolutely no use to Ndombele, Gio, Dele or Gil in his current state. They all need a hard working, mobile forward, just like Eriksen and Dembele did. At the moment, Son is way more important as he's always on the move and available. He is another one that shut down at the end of last season on his work-rate but looks to have picked it up again this season.

There were probably 2 or 3 moments against Rennes when we saw the Ndombele / Kane combo. There could have been a lot more. That was down to Kane not showing, not Ndombele who constantly looked for him.

You also don't kid a kidder in life. We can all see when he's pretending to go for a header with the centre halves and going in half hearted. That isn't what the old Kane did. You could buffet him all day.
