Harris & Clemence

This Barrow fan on a L2 forum is not happy with Clem after their 1-0 defeat at table-topping Walsall saw them drop to 15th. Although they had more possession and a fair number of shots. As Scott Lindsey said, a game of fine margins. If they’d won 1-0 he’d probably be happy.

How the fuck are Walsall top of the League? If we had a competent manager and someone who actually wanted to put the ball in the back of the net we’d have got 2/3 today……..

Hopefully this is the final straw and Steven Clemence gets his p45 before he does any more damage to barrow.

But this quote from Harris…
“It's been difficult for the lads because they're losing their leader and it's difficult for them to understand why, and where they're going next”
What a prick. Think he’s some kind of massiah. Don’t worry Neil, I’m sure that the players will adjust quickly after losing their leader… …I find that their next pay packet usually helps.

That's some arrogance right there.

I liked both Harris and Clemence and thought either or both might have been given longer. The football under Harris was dull but a) we knew what we were getting into when employing him and b) Venables couldn't have made a free flowing attacking team with the players he had at his disposal.

Agreed, it didn’t read well.

I didn’t have Neil down as someone who if he was an ice cream he would lick himself.

That quote says otherwise

We can summise as much as we like about Neil's Millwall departure but as with his Gills one we'll probably never know the truth.

One thing is for sure though, and that is being a modern day football manager must be a fucking nightmare when you consider the microscopic analysis of every decision that you make - both big and small.
Imagine having to deal with the modern day, over sensitive, over entitled players and the ever demanding hierarchy of a football club. Imagine going onto various social media outlets and seeing journalists and armchair managers - like us - ripping the shit out of you because the players on the pitch couldn't be arsed that day. Imagine being 2 or 3 defeats away from your p45 because those said players are not performing.

Managers are human and no wonder they resort to the odd inappropriate snap or caustic comment. Aren't we all guilty of a faux pas from time to time.
I know being a manager is what they do and no one forces them to do it but by christ, some days they must have a right gutfull.

Recent Gills Managers Neil Harris, Stephen Clemence and Mark Bonner all seem really decent blokes and wether one agrees or not with their results or style of play, they are just trying to do their best to be a success for themselves and their clubs.

Unfortunately the first two of them failed in their quest for success at Gillingham football club. I sincerely hope that the current incumbent succeeds.

Yes, because they are always regarded as the one responsible when things go wrong. presumably because they are meant to be leading the players and tactics, so they cop it.

But if they SAY they are the leader (and therefore taking that responsibility), they are an arrogant pr*ck with a messiah syndrome.

I was surprised to see NH move one from Millwall. I thought that he got them punching above their weight, so can’t see why they’d look for someone else but equally, the style of his football is unlikely to mean that there’s someone bigger in the pipeline for him. It seems strange that he’s seemingly left two clubs in the past couple of seasons mysteriously/under a cloud.

I’m surprised that he has the reputation of being ultra popular with his players as I saw the team first hand away at Crawley when they were being briefed pre-match by NH and Livermore and there was a strange, almost school kids and master type atmosphere completely lacking in banter.

If they are being briefed, I think any manager would not be encouraging banter going on between them at that same specific time. Imagine that with Fergie

I do remember an article on KOL by Aidan O'Brien who was only on loan but he was saying what a wonderful group it was and how they had all made him feel part of it.

Whether any of that was down to NH, I don't know. There is always a fine line to tread and personally I don't think a manager can just still be one of the lads or they will never be able to exert their authority when needed.

Even the most amiable manager like Lovell must have had to read the riot act occasionally.

Harris on his way to Plymouth apparently.
Just within the last week or so:
Rowett (formerly Millwall) to Oxford
(Alex) Neil (formerly Preston and Stoke) to Millwall
Robins (formerly Coventry) to Stoke
Harris (formerly Millwall and Cardiff) to Plymouth?

Lampard (formerly of Derby) pitches up at Coventry and Rooney is now formerly of Derby and Plymouth.

Championship now seems to be revolving doors as well as a closed shop. Neat trick.
