Elleray was a total disgrace that day. At every aerial challenge between their centre-forward and big Stan (Paul Stancliffe), and there were a lot of them as that was their tactic at the time, Stan got a faceful of centre-forward’s elbow. What did Elleray do about it? Sweet F.A.!
How Stan didn’t retaliate, I don’t know, but then no doubt, the officious Mr. Elleray would have sent him off - and the F.A. would be happy that they had such a “strong” referee in charge.
Sadly, as far as I know, Elleray is still is in a position to encourage incompetence in the game as Technical Director of IFAB (the body that determines the Laws of the Game!).
You couldn’t make it up!
