Graham Taylor

Vital Football Hero
The death has been announced of former England, Aston Villa and Watford manager Graham Taylor. He was born in Worksop, Notts and was just 72. That's no age -and I should know.

This makes me sad.

He was a nice man, my wife used to mind his grandchildren.

Nothing was too much trouble for him, he'd always donate something to the school raflle, even came to open the school faté a few times too.

R.I.P to one of the genuinely nicest people in the game.

Nice guy - makes me sad as well!

I met him once when he found out I was a Forest fan he told me a nice Cloughie story

He said he got a phonecall from BC one morning whilst he was at Watford

"Graham - me and Peter Taylor are having a testimonial. If your chairman (Elton) will come to Nottingham and do a concert for us I will let you sign any reserve team player of your choice on a free transfer"

Although BC and Elton became friends Elton didn't like the idea!

(that was 1978 - looking back how did BC wangle a testimonial after such a short time at the club to start with?) lol

Regardless RIP Graham Taylor - true gentleman and will be sadly missed

A sad day. I met Mr Taylor a few times and he was genuinely one of the nicest guys in football and knew more about the game than most people gave him credit for. The media slaughtered him when he was England manager and he did not deserve it. He had a 47% win rate apparently as the England boss

RIP Mr Taylor, football has lost a gentleman

He always seemed like one of the good guys. A really good pundit, too - charming and very insightful.

I know that game in Rotterdam wasn't the be all and end all of his England tenure, but it's still one of the most crooked refereeing displays of all time.

Not the greatest manager, but if Gareth Southgate goes on to achieve even 10% of what Graham Taylor has achieved in the game then he will have gone on to have a substantially more successful management career than I expect him to have.

Was bullied by the London based press who I felt always thought they were intellectually superior to him. He tried to pick a 'team' for England rather than just the best players, hence he capped Carlton Palmer. The press were never going to go for that and jumped on him when it all went wrong.

Who knows what could have happened if the Rotterdam game had gone his way.

Hope they show his 'do I not like that' documentary again. Was classic viewing and would be great to see Nige, Psycho & Des up close again.

Do i not like that

That was possibly the best - although I was 13 in 1994 so my taste may not necessarily be trusted - football documentaries ever made.

Aside from Gazza's when he was at Rangers.

RIP

Was robbed when Koman wasn't sent off & 92 was crap but again Boli should've been sent off for head butting Pearce.

The press slaughtered Robson before Italia 90, they were massively out of order & would do well to remember when doing their Eulogising & then just carried on with Taylor it wasn't till they got their facking cor blimey El Tel purra bit a black currant in me larger me auld China, facking cockney sparra that they showed an England manager any support but he was a crook then they got rid of Hoddle ( rightly though as he was out of order) slaughtered Sven, Postman Pat & Big Sam.

Press in this country are a bunch of London centric phone hacking c**ts.
