The Fear

Didn't like him after he rammed Hamilton off the track last (?) season but wow, this is surprising

Head of Mercedes-Benz motorsport Toto Wolff has paid tribute to Nico Rosberg after the Silver Arrows stalwart announced his shock retirement from Formula One. Such a surprising decision was confirmed on Friday (2 December), just five days after the German had banished the memory of back-to-back disappointments to claim his first world title courtesy of a five-point buffer over Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton.

"Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target," he wrote in an official statement released via Facebook. "And now I've made it. I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right."

Wimp. He knew Hamilton would hammer him next year. He only won the Championship because Mercedes helped him nobble Hamilton's car.

You watch. It will all come out one day.

(Oh no, I sound like a conspiracy nut. Where's my foil helmet?)

Conspiracies and joking asside, when competing on level terms, Hamilton has shown himself to be the superior driver over the last 4 seasons, including this one. Reliability issues was the differnce in Rosberg's favour this time around.

I heard in February that Mercedes wanted a German champion, and they were going to make sure it happened.

Strange how it panned out.

The fact that Hamilton was a mere 5 points behind Rosberg, despite all the mechanical failures he experienced this season, says it all. I'd like to see Alonso take up the spare seat at Mercedes for next season, he's far too good a driver to waste away at McLaren for much longer.

Fair play to Rosberg for winning the title, but I can't say I'll be sad to see the back of him.

Cheating, whining, cowardly tosser.

I still remember him red flagging that qualifying session at Monaco.

He had to cheat to get an edge. Terrible that he is World Champion.

Made his money and obvious not hungry like Lewis is for the sport.

What was the GP he rammed Lewis off, think it was the night one, so is that Aba Dabba Doo or Dubai

I know after the one I thought he'd be banned, he should have been. If memory serves me, he all but admitted it in the end! (Not impossible that I dreamed that bit up though as my memory doesn't always serve me right!)

Fair play for winning it but surely he has to go down as one of the worst F1 champions in recent times. He was in the best car and only won because his team mate had several unexplainable mechanical issues. He's quit because he knows he has completely fluked it and he won'tbe able to replicate it next season

Yes i think fair play to Rosberg but meh really.

Big argument for Alonso being the best driver out there. Lewis may be more natural but has been prone to rush of blood moments while Alonso when provided with the car is probably more consistent
Like Alonso and has been in the wilderness too long and would love to see how he does in a competitive car again. Has history with Lewis though back in the days when they were at Mclaren and Lewis broke through. Could be out the frying pan for Lewis.

was such a shame the way Button bowed out with a mechanical failure. He had wanted (and I think deserved) a finish so he could have a bit of fun at the end of the race

Is 31 old or young for an F1 driver?

Old would be around 35. Felipe Massa and Jenson Button have just retired aged 35 and 36. Raikkonen is the oldest current F1 racer at 37 and is still quite good.

Maybe 1 World Championship is enough for Rosberg? Just like James Hunt.

Guys like Schumacher and Pete Sampras who can do it consistently for a decade or more are very rare.

I remember Roy Keane going nuts after he won the CL at Man Utd. Some of the other players were saying that they didn't care if they never won it again but for Keane, there could never be enough.

In sports, we idolise those with Keane's mentality but, as I said, they are very rare.

He's just a sausage munching bottle job. Only won the world title due to Hamilton's car somehow being more unreliable than his.
Feckin germans.
