Glenn Whelan Thread

The simple question is:

Will Glenn Whelan make the difference this season?

We probably need to think on a grander scale than this but without understanding his role and who else we will try to bring in its difficult to see what use he'll be.

We can't have a midfield full of Kroos' or Silva's but we you'd like your watercarrier to be able to pass it sideways to a teammate 90% of the time. Westwood did that much at least.

And he is 33, all you aspiring young lads ... you can all just sit back and learn - from the bench, until we can get some mug to buy you. Just so underwhelmed.

It does make me smile . We sign Hourihane , Hogan and co and plenty of people on here saying we are signing championship standard players so we are in for a good solid premiership standard player and still people are moaning .

Jedinak made a massive difference to us last season and Whelan is in a similar mould to him and if the question is will he improve us , than to me the answer is yes he will.

We need creativity in midfield not another oldie looking for a boost to his pension fund.

Come on Brucie, show some imagination for once.

To be honest, I'm not that excited by anyone we sign, and haven't been for a few years now.

All a bit 'meh' for me these days, as I can't trust that anyone we sign will deliver the goods. Whether it's their problem or the coaches/manager, I've just been left underwhelmed in recent memory.

Oh for God's sake Sir Dennis. Coming on and trying to be positive and sensible.

Tried to say the same last night r.e the point of needing 2 players in the jedinak position
1- to play there when jedinak is injured or
2- to play there when jedinak is at CB.

Or we don't sign him and if the scenarios above happen we could play Gardner or Lansbury because that really worked well last season didn't it?.

Not saying it's a marquee signing at all but we all saw the value of jedinak last season and Whelan is in that mould massively experienced.

And as for the comments about the youth playing there. Who's that then ?

Youth? Lyden, Tshibola (if he stays), Toner. 3 players all capable of stepping in as and when required.

I can see options with what we've got. To me, getting Whelan means cutting off some of those options.

As to Whelan himself, Stoke didn't have a great season last time around. Is that why Hughes has decided to pension him off?

Toner is a centre half who couldn't always get into Walsalls team when he was on loan last season. Ditto Tshibola at Notts Forest and Lyden who has potential has had a terrible time with injuries so you can't hang your hat on those three.

To be honest I've not seen much of whelan but surely he has to be an upgrade on Gardner in the middle

Same way sidwell at Brighton was one of the best CM's in the league last season and ended up promoted

I'm sure he's an upgrade on Gardner as far as experience and know how is concerned, but what worries me is 'legs'. If he comes, we are in danger of having Waldorf and Statler in midfield.

Mind, you, when you're only allowed to go to the car boot sale until we actually sell, what else can we expect?.....

There's an uncensored F-bomb on that fans reaction article in CDXs post, in case someone needs to know :17: :10:

Forgot to say thanks yesterday and to JPA who alerted your post so I saw it.

Folks, if you ever see the likes on the front page, if I have missed bad language, please feel free to pm me as it's important I don't have bad language in articles! That's the first time I've done that so out of hundreds of articles, no real damage done! lol

But thanks, appreciate the heads up.

Well that answers my question r.e what youth would play if Jedinak was not playing.

No options then. Tish doesnt play that role and as for Lyden and Toner....i would ask this question...

As a manager you want to get promoted from a tough, competitive league, under huge pressure at a big club. You have a choice. Play an international player with nearly 300 premier league matches under his belt or chance your arm on a youngster who is totally and utterly unproven, inexperienced, may or may not make it with the club.

Anyone who genuinely thinks about that and says that if they were in the managers shoes under this huge pressure from an expectant fanbase and chairman they would choose the youngster, i think is telling porkies.

Getting out of this league certainly ain't with the caveat of making sure we give unproven youth a chance just because it looks good, in my opinion.

No problem Mr. Fear, and cheers JPA for alerting it, I wasn't sure what the protocol is for such things so hoped someone would see my post.

I just hope the other members aren't going to steal my lunch money and beat me up now :71:

I apologise.

Work email is the only time I have my filter or in client meetings. Guessing its an advertiser thing?

Glenn Whelan or Mathieu Flamini?
(Or perhaps both?)
