Gills signings

Vital 1st Team Regular
Apart from Dean Parrett, the signings are uninspiring to say the least.

Players cast aside by other league one teams, players who played non league last season etc, etc.

While Barry Fuller may be a useful bench warmer, he wont be in the lower category of player's wages. I wonder why he was released by Wimbledon? I'd bet he's on about 1k a week - unless he's on heavily incentivised deal - but you wont do that if you know you're hardly going to get a game unless 1st choice gets injured.

For me i think the overall quality in the squad is currently no better than the end of the season.

The budget must be in the lower half of the table i would guess.

I think taking a punt on non-league players backfired last time. Nash? I'm sure there are others.

I may be proved totally wrong but the signs are worrying for me.

You will be proven wrong. The spine of the side is still there. We were never going to sign a load of “big name” players. You mention Parrett as the one “good signing” but you have no idea how good he is, just like you have no idea about the others.

If Reilly signs, I’d say - barring a few loans here and there - that we’re done in term of signings before August 4th. (Unless a trialist shows up and impresses like Sidibe, Nash etc)

I admit i have only seen Parrett play twice but both times i saw him he looked good on the ball.

I hope i am proved to be wrong though.

I feel that O'Neil could be really pushed by Barry Fuller so much so .Luke could be a key player this season at times he was at best very ordinary last season .Fuller's presence will almost certainly stop that happening .

O'Neil is 1st choice and only injury, suspension or poor form would stop him being 1st 11.

Wimbledon let him go and there's always a reason. Maybe they got a better player for less money.

What a lot of bollux from WX. Give these signings a chance. Just the type of "supporter" who totally pees me off.

I understand what you’re saying WX. But this is about building a team. You only have to look at Milwall last year. Don’t think they had any big players - but they did pretty well last year. And look at the likes of Eaves who didn’t set the world alight before joining us.

I hope that SL is getting the blend ‘spot on’ for this coming season and only he can see that on the training field.

Taylor and Pennock signed a load of league two players, a non-leaguer with Wilkinson the only player signed from a higher leagued club and was criticised by fans for signing inferior players.

Lovell does the same but a higher percentage of non-league and people are quietly optimistic.

When you are fighting to stay in a league i wonder if that would be the time for the non-league players to take their chance.

You don't get the chance to build if the team was to be losing games.

It's a risky strategy going for non-league and non-players (Fuller).

I hope it's doesn't prove a false economy.

I genuinely feel the squad has not improved since the end of May.

I think people would prefer it if Scally was honest and said we’ve got a very low budget for this league again (partly due to falling attendances etc) and the main target is survival. We have to shop in non league and look at players rejected from clubs at our level previously, as that is the level of wages we can afford (save 1 or 2 exceptions).

I doubt Lovell would be bringing these players in if he could afford Championship or established League 1 players.

I do think that's an interesting point. Scally continuously tells us our wage budget is competitive in this league. Yet we have signed only one established league 1 player and even he was signed from a local relegation rival (okay so we probably had to shell out a little more to re-sign Zak and Byrne also), but other than that have not really signed players that give the impression of being in line with a 'competitive' budget.
Of course these players do have the chance of excelling, but you can't deny the signings just aren't really in line with the comments from Scally that we are on a competitive budget.

I agree. If Scally said this people would be more inclined to accept things but the signings are not matching the chairman's words - that's the problem.

The fact we have a sponsorship deal worth £0 says something about the way companies view us.

whenever you see a job salary advertised as ‘competitive’ it’s a given it’ll be competitive to the minimum wage and nothing else.

Nash wasn't non-league; he was about 3 tiers below that.

Bollux again. We also have a main commercial sponsor.

I'm quite pleased by some of these signings. Barry Fuller, never seen him play and generally don't like players returning to the club unless in a coaching managerial role so I'll reserve judgement. As for the others so far, to my mind this is exactly what a club in Gills situation should do. Sniff around and pick up players with potential from footballs bargain basement. Patto and SL seem to have an eye for a player (by this I mean know the type of player they want) and the ability to get the best out of them when they get here.
It will be intriguing to see who steps up over the coming season. I'm looking forward to it. Just hope ifollow hit the ground running.

So how often have you bitched about the likes of Peterborough signing non-league players then selling them for a big profit while complaining we don't do that? Muppet fans slating the players and, by association, the manager before a ball has been kicked in anger.
