Gillingham - Fratton Park - Saturday 10th March

Having enjoyed - if that is the right choice of words - a free weekend, due to the Bradford postponement, we return to Fratton Park on Saturday for the visit of Gillingham.

Last time round, at Fratton, Pompey were poor, in a generally disappointing game all-round, against Blackpool as the Tangerines left with all three points when the Blues showed arguably our poorest performance of the season.

If the showing is as poor as the one against Blackpool there's likely to be a reaction from the Fratton crowd, certainly sections of it, as they make it clear it isn't good enough. However, as far as I'm concerned, as long as the players give their all I'll be happy, whatever the outcome.

As a general rule, which isn't necessarily a given, a positive result at home would be anticipated, but certainly not expected - I think we know the pitfalls of this a good few times this season.

Gillingham, literally just behind Pompey in League 1, come to the South Coast with an eye on a late surge into the top-six. We'll have to be much better at the weekend if we're to get a positive result, which all being well the Blues can achieve as I make my own return to Fratton, having been unable to attend for a good few games.

A point, three or nothing? What do we think?

The Football League have now announced the Match Day officials that will take charge of the game between Portsmouth and Gillingham this Saturday.

Portsmouth's Nathan Thompson will be out of action this week as he serves an automatic suspension.

Have this feeling of deja vu, but go into this game feeling it's important we put on a good performance tomorrow, ideally with a win too.

At this point I'm hopeful, but not entirely confident of this happening.

Half time there wasn't ANY sign of the eventual outcome on Saturday was there? Thought that opening 45 was really good, with the Blues playing some good stuff.

That goal within minutes of the second half - admittedly a really good goal we couldn't have done much about - did for us. A slow start proving costly.

Gillingham's second goal, which Luke McGee should have saved no two ways about it, was the killer though. As soon as that went in the fading confidence in this young team completely drained away, we then looked what we are, a young and inexperienced side that needs to build confidence.

On the flip side - perhaps missing recent games helped me - I enjoyed this and take the positives, so I wasn't as despondent as some and, which is perhaps the least you should expect - as a friend said to me, was pleased we kept battling until the last.

The boos at the end when the lads praised the fans was not good and won't help them either.
Gillingham had more shape and pattern to their play with composure in midfield. After five minutes I could see that we did not and only hoped that they could not finish. They proved otherwise. Nevermind, Hey ho !

Without doubt that was the case on Saturday against Gillingham as it was most definitely a case of two halves as defeat against Blackpool was followed up with another at Fratton Park.
