Freddie Flintoff - Heavyweight Boxer

Galvin's Shinpads

Vital Football Legend
This has the makings of one really bad drama. No time for this genre of professional celebrity 'sport'. In true style, Dawson should knock his block off!

I saw half an hour of his documentary. I don't think you can knock his passion and motivation behind wanting to be a professional boxer - there are others who have started at a similar age from nothing, its only the fact that he is already a "celebrity" that people are making a deal out of it. He's in good shape and can deal with pressure on the big scale.... only problem is he can't actually box at a high level and it would have been more interesting seeing him rise through amateur levels before hitting pro, which is where this falls flat.

On a similar note, both Price and Fury are boxing this weekend. Here are two heavyweights with potential to take over the mantel that will be left when the Klitsckos decide to call it a day. Really hoping the two have a scrap and take on Haye at some point, but its nice to see us having two proper heavyweights and not just a world class cruiserweight moving up divisions trying to represent at the top level

Another reason to cancel Sky Sports.
When was the last time a decent boxing match was part of the subscription ?

Tyson Fury is a meathead. If he becomes a contender, the Heavyweight division is truly gone for good.

Price would destroy Fury IMO - as he's just dont to Skelton in two.

Fury is a big puncher but has never properly been tested so its hard to tell whether or not he would mix it with the big boys.

As for big fights on Sky Sports - there have been some good Khan fights, a number of Pac Man fights and Froch last week. To be honest, the heavyweight division is where the big money is, and lets face it, the ones that draw the big audience, but they're rarely the best fights. Froch is in the form of his life and isn't given enough press. Personally I think he would have beaten Calzaghe had the two ever met in the ring.

If Khan and Brook ever meet, I hope to god they don't make it PPV - that would be a great fight

Well done Freddie. Pretty awful fight and he needs to learn he cant just be aggressive all the way - but glad he won.

A lot of training, especially on his head shots (which are more like slaps) needed. Good body shots though - landed some pretty heavy hits to Dawsons ribs

Khan is all hype. He seems to have the cockiness of Naseem Hamed but without the technical nous.

After watching the farce that was Flintoff and the ITV reality brigade, Boxing is in real trouble, never mind the heavyweight division!

Pacquiao is not the fighter he once was and therefore Mayweather will possibly go for the long-overdue match-up. That is the biggest price boxing has to give. Long gone are the days of Roberto Duran or even Mike Tyson, in their prime.

Wish Nas had carried on. One of very few that had the ability to back up the bravado and actually a joy to watch in the ring.

Saying that, if Haye can actually sort himself out again, he is a good boxer. Should have stuck at being the worlds best cruiserweight though - he's a good heavyweight in a very poor era, but not a great one.

Price is the one to watch in the heavyweight. If Fury wins his eliminator tomorrow, I hope he fights Price first - not that he will, because he knows he'll get smashed

I was hoping the prick would get knocked out and sent to the hospital. You have guys who have been fighting for years, trying to get some recognition then he comes along with no experience whatsoever and gets all the headlines just because he is a ex cricketer. It's pathetic. Total disgrace

The media jumped all over it and wanted to cover it. He had genuine ambition to become a boxer as he wanted to get back into sport. If they didn't televise it people would be asking how he'd been getting on and why his progress isn't being televised. Its like the Beckham scenario with him potentially moving to play for Monaco - its not exactly massive news in the football world, but if you heard in 4 months time he'd just scored a screamer for Monaco and his move wasn't covered in the media, you'd be thinking "when the fuck did that happen?"

I like Flintoff. He's a decent bloke. He's a pretty poor boxer and should have gone through the amateur ranks first, but he has just beaten a professional, even if it was only his 3rd fight.....

Sorry Dave don't agree with it whatever way you try and spin it. It's wrong and I hope he fails big time.

Because he has not earnt the right thats why. I know boxers at the different weights and they have fought around 20-30 amature fights desperate to get a shot as a pro and he just walks in and gets the spot light. They have more talent than he does. The only reason why he has got a shot is because he is famous. It's wrong. He looked fecking shite as well by the way. It's a total farce.

But he did win..... If Flintoff doesn't deserve to be a pro boxer, what does that say about Dawson? He's also won his previous 2 fights so there must be plenty of shitter boxers out there than Freddy....

Also - if you're not interested, don't watch it! I was and I certainly wasn't be the only one

Let's get the Freddie fight in some context. This fight was his first mad perhaps only professional fight and regardless of the result he was under huge media pressure and in a no win situation. Lose and he's a bum, win and he was only fighting a bum.

Let's give everyone some benefit here in thinking that unless he suddenly takes this to a level when he wins another six plus fights and looks great the novelty will wear off very quickly

As for Price and Fury, it think considering the lack of quality in the heavyweight division, they have genuine chances of winning a world title. Price looks particularly promising, but should we get too excited at his beating 45 yr old Skelton. Let's judge him when he hopefully faces and beats Dereck Czhora (spelling) in the new year

As for Fury, I quite like him, he is surprisingly versatile for sauce a huge man, but needs to be fitter and tested against better quality fighters and hopefully tonight wil be a sterner test

Price only turned pro 3 years ago but is 15-0. He destroyed Fraudley in just over a minute and has only ever been taken twice (in a 4 and a 6 round fight). I've watched 4 of his pro fights and a few of his amateur ones at the olympics in 2008 - he is a real talent.

Fury has age on his side and one hell of a KO punch - but other than a points victory over Chisora (who was completely embarassed by Haye) has not really beaten anyone of any note.

I will be watching the Fury fight on Channel 5 tonight with much anticipation. He wins and he has a title shot lined up. He loses and he's got to have a square off with Price for the best of the British contenders.

I still feel that Haye is the most complete boxer of the lot, but as I said previous, he is a world class cruiserweight and a good, but not great heavyweight. He is still one of the best Heavyweights around, but the division is short of real talent
